St. Andrew’s Schools Summer School Programs St. Andrew’s Schools’ Summer School Programs offers a variety of hands-on learning experiences that are engaging and fun. Students can select from a variety of academic, athletic, enrichment athletics and arts courses. Enrollment is open to girls and boys entering kindergarten through grade 12. The Lower and Middle School Grades K-8 Program offers a diverse selection of courses that reinforce foundational concepts and skills and offer an enriching, fun, and active learning experience in morning and afternoon sessions for five weeks, from June 17-July 19. The Early Morning Grades K-6 Enrichment is available for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade who are enrolled in St. Andrew’s Schools’ Summer School Programs. Enrollment is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. The afternoon session is available for boys and girls in grades K-8 whether or not they are enrolled in the morning session. In our afternoon session, we offer a Junior Leadership Program to help prepare middle schoolers to be leaders of tomorrow. This program will help students build character based on emotional security, handle criticism and learn to use feedback for personal improvement, become a better model by increasing self-awareness and turn their core values into actions that inspire their peers to follow in their steps. Lower and Middle School Course Descriptions June 17-July 19 Early Morning Enrichment – Builders & Designers 7-7:50 a.m. – Grades K-6 Rise and shine! Spend a creative morning doing fun hands-on projects. Students have the opportunity to explore different projects while using critical thinking and creative skills. English Immersion Course 8 a.m.-Noon – Grades K-5 For English language learners. All instructions and conversations will be held in English. In order to build on their English, students will attend English classes in reading, writing, art, listening and conversational through integrated skills. Open to students ages 5-11. Priority will be given to ESL students. We offer a daily drop in fee of $75. Parent/guardians are responsible for the following: ● Travel to and from country to Hawai‘i ● Travel documents and visas ● Travel and medical insurance policies in English that indicates health coverage while attending St. Andrew’s Schools ● Transportation to and from school ● Students must reside with a parent or guardian ● A local, Hawai‘i phone number and address of primary guardians Kindergarten Here We Come! (Single Gender Class) 8 a.m.-Noon Ready, set, go! Through a variety of fun, active and hands-on learning experiences – both in and outside of the classroom – our students explore what it’s like to be a kindergartener and practice foundational skills to help make their kindergarten experience a success! Students will learn daily routines, how to be a good friend and classmate; and practice critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills as they engage in project-based reading, writing, math, science and arts activities. Our little ones grow in confidence and independence as they discover their interests and talents. Small class sizes allow for individualized instruction. First Grade Explorers (Single Gender Class)
8 a.m.-Noon Entering first grade students build on skills they have learned in kindergarten through a variety of fun, active and hands-on learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom. In this self-contained, full morning class, foundational skills are reinforced and strengthened in reading, writing and math. The curriculum is literature and theme based and centered around the Common Core State Standards. Science and the Engineering Design Process will also assist in articulating the developmentally appropriate postkindergarten curriculum. The Write Stuff – A Reading and Writing Workshop 8-10 a.m. – Grades 4-5 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 2-3 Enjoy a summer filled with adventure, exploration and creation in this course designed to enhance the love of reading and writing, reinforce literacy skills, and explore students’ creative sides through creative writing and drawing. Emphasis will be on the writing process and reading for understanding. Common Core reading and writing skills/concepts are reinforced. *This course is not for ESL learners. Math Attack Workshop
8-10 a.m. – Grades 2-3 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 4-6 A math reinforcement class that will focus on strengthening and enriching the student’s grade level math skills through hands-on learning projects. Students will have the opportunity to practice computational skills, develop a deeper understanding of math concepts, and challenge their thinking through collaborative problem solving as they work on applying their math skills to a real-world project. Singapore Math and Common Core skills are incorporated. Super Science!
8-10 a.m. – Grades 2-3 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 4-5 Learn the science behind the fun! Explore new topics each week with hands-on activities and labs. So, grab a hold of a Bunsen burner and prepare to learn about the awesome world around us! Krafty Kids Art
8-10 a.m. – Grades 2-3 10 a.m.-noon – Grades 4-5 Students will have a hands-on arts and crafts experience working with a variety of different media, exploring different types of arts and crafts, and creating 2D and 3D pieces. By the end of the session, students will have an assortment of items to take home and will be able to share their arts and crafts knowledge. All supplies included in this course. Beginning Band 8-10:00 a.m. – Grades 5-8 This class is designed to introduce students to their choice of band instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba or percussion. No experience is necessary. What a great way to spend your summer as you learn how to play a new instrument! Supplies: Rental instruments are available for $50 for the duration of the summer session. Soup to Nuts – A Culinary Adventure through Children’s Literature 8-10 a.m. – Grade 4-5 10 a.m.-Noon –Grade 2-3 Come and explore the world of nature through children’s literature. This year’s gastronomic journey should provide fun in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, art, and of course, eating. Plants and a few wild things are on the menu! Peanuts and tree nuts may be used. Please notify the summer director or the instructor if there are any dietary restrictions. Accommodations will be made whenever possible. Maximum of 12 students per class.

Lower and Middle School Course Descriptions June 17-July 19 Keiki in the Kitchen 8-10 a.m. – Grades 4-5 10 a.m.-Noon - Grades 6-8 Join us in for a culinary adventure as students learn how to cook scrumptious dishes! Cooking is not only a fun and engaging activity, but one that helps develop independence, problem solving and confidence. Students will build healthy eating habits while applying their math, reading and writing skills. They will cook from recipes that they can recreate at home and take home a recipe book with all of their creations. Elemental Minds – Engineering
10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 2-3 Come join us on our summer adventure to learn about simple machines, energy, hydrodynamics and coding through hands-on, minds-on projects. Your child will learn about and utilize the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create and improve their own designs while practicing their 21st century skills such as problem solving, innovation and perseverance. Release the inner engineer in your child! Elemental Minds – Innovators
8-10 a.m. – Grades 4-8 The Elemental Minds summer S.T.E.M. program will offer your child the opportunity to design and engineer fun hands-on and minds-on projects while developing their 21st century skills such as collaboration, problem solving and perseverance. This year’s projects will provide experiences in programming, engineering and science, as your child learns about kinetic and potential energy, circuits, hydraulics and chemistry. Students will test their creations in friendly competitions as they become the innovators of tomorrow! Stop Motion – Animaniacs Unite 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 4-8 Ever wonder how movies like Kubo and the Two Strings, Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas or Wallace and Gromit are made? Join us this summer for Stop Motion Mania, where students will learn to script and pre-visualize stories, build characters out of modeling clay and Sculpey, design sets, record and edit video, and do post-production work on sound, music and effects. Imagination is the only limit! Enrollment is limited to 16 students. Kids Who Code – Coding for Game Design
8-10 a.m. – Grades 4-8 What is computer science? What can you do with it? Through fun activities, students will learn the basics of computer science and programming through individual, group and online activities. We will be using MIT’s Scratch to learn the basics of how to write programs for game development and digital storytelling. Using Math in Your Everyday Life 8-10 a.m. – Grades 6-8 The aim of this course is to strengthen and enrich fundamental math skills. Students will have the opportunity to practice computational skills, develop a deeper understanding of math concepts and challenge their thinking through collaborative problem solving. This course will use real-life situations such as cooking, sewing, shopping and personal finance to demonstrate these skills.

Lower and Middle School Course Descriptions June 17-July 19 Youth Theater Performance Academy 10 a.m.- Noon – Grades 4-8 This course explores ways to combine creative expression, collaboration and culture as students prepare to produce a final performance. Through activities, movement and improvisational games, students will learn actors’ tools, BVMI (body, voice, mind and imagination), how to create characters by analyzing CROW (character, relationship, objective and whereabouts) in a story and collaborate with peers to tell a story. Your child will develop positive connections with others, become good observers and learn to trust their instincts and others. Students will have a performance on their last class day, July 19. Roving Reporters – In the News! 8- 10 a.m. – Grades 6-8 Extra! Extra! Have you ever wanted to become a reporter? In this writing project-based learning course, students will create a St. Andrew’s Schools newsletter by exploring local and national news. They will learn about the main sections of a newspaper and our own roving reporters will have the opportunity to create articles on a variety of topics including interviews with summer school students. Students will have the opportunity to write movie reviews and travel articles and will produce a summer newsletter. Lights, Camera, Action – A Journey in Visual Storytelling 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 6-8 An introduction into basic visual storytelling. This class covers the three stages of production and how to plan and execute the communication of a message to target audiences. Participants use multiple types of production equipment, including HD camcorders, microphones, lighting instruments and editing software. Participants who complete the course become certified through ‘Ōlelo, granting them access to the production facilities, resources and equipment they are trained to use. Students will develop, film and edit a 30-second PSA or mini documentary. This class will be in partnership with ‘Ōlelo. Minecraft, eSports & Game Design @ HPU eSports Stadium 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 5-8 Minecraft is much more than a game! It’s a game design engine, an engineer’s sandbox, a digital storyboard and an incredible coding environment. Students will learn the basics of computer science as they code their Minecraft world with Microsoft MakeCode. Design teams and the iterative design process will be embedded throughout the course as participants design, have peers test their games and improve based on feedback they receive throughout the project. The course will also include a special exploration into the world of eSports. Students will play and compete in a variety of games to get a true sense of what’s possible in competitive gaming. Classes will be taught by St. Andrew’s faculty and held at the HPU eSports Stadium at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Students will be escorted by staff to and from the eStadium from the St. Andrew’s Campus by bus if transportation is needed. Under the Sea – Marine Biology 8-noon – Grades 6-8 This laboratory course will expose students to the spectrum of marine biology. It will explore geological, physical, chemical, biological and engineering concepts as it relates to the marine environment. Several field experiences will take place at the ocean, culminating in a service-learning project that contributes to the appreciation and protection of our natural resources. This class will be in partnership with the Waikiki Aquarium.

Lower and Middle School Course Descriptions June 17-July 19 Mālama ʻĀina – S.T.E.A.M. 8 a.m.-Noon – Grades 6-8 This course will explore the geology, meteorology and biology of the Hawaiian Islands. The course begins with the formation of the islands and ends with the current day invasion of alien species. Hiking field trips will take place around O‘ahu, culminating in a service learning project that contributes to the appreciation and protection of our natural resources. PreAlgebra 8 a.m.-Noon – Grades 7-8 In this course, students will review the basic skills of PreAlgebra to prepare for Algebra I. Topics include fractions, negative numbers, proportions, linear equations, inequalities, exponents, functions and graphs. Application of algebra skills is emphasized. Algebra I 8 a.m.-Noon – Grade 8 An in-depth session to learn the basic skills of algebra. Topics include proportions, variations, linear equations, systems of equations, inequalities, exponents and exponential equations functions, transformations of graphs and quadratic functions. Prerequisite is PreAlgebra. Scientific calculator such as a TI-NSpire™ CX CAS is required.

Lower and Middle School Course Descriptions June 17-July 19 Afternoon Session 12:30-5:30 p.m. – Grades K-8 Come and play with us! This fun, age appropriate program provides afternoon supervision, and organized bus field trips, walking field trips, indoor and outdoor games, crafts, cooking and weekly free swim at the pool/water play activities. Enrichment classes are available for an additional fee. Each enrichment class offers its own unique learning experience. Lunch may be purchased from our cafeteria or students may bring their own home lunch. Students will be monitored from Noon-12:30 p.m. and escorted to their afternoon sessions by summer staff. Parents should also send a complete change of clothes and a sleeping mat for students in the kindergarten class. A nap/rest time is scheduled for students in kindergarten. We offer a daily drop in fee of $50. Our Junior Leader Program is open to all students in grades 7 and 8. This program will help students build character based on emotional security, handle criticism and learn to use feedback for personal improvement, become better models by increasing self-awareness and turn their core values into actions that inspire their peers to follow in their steps.
Afternoon Session Enrichments Beginning Band
Monday-Friday, 2:15-3 p.m. – Grades 5-8 Disappointed that you couldn’t take band in the morning? Here’s your chance! This program is designed to allow any student entering grades 5-12 to take summer beginning band five times a week during the Afternoon Session. Supplies: Rental instruments are available for $50 for the duration of the summer session. Swim and Sports Wednesday & Friday Swim & Tuesday & Thursday Sports, Noon-2 p.m. – Grades 1-2 Tuesday & Thursday Swim & Wednesday & Friday Sports, 12:45-2 p.m. – Grades 3-6 Time to move! Students will participate in weekly sport-specific clinics that emphasize a love for sports, skills development and learning fundamentals through game play. Students will develop a growth mindset while learning good sportsmanship. Students will enjoy field trips that incorporate different aspects of fitness once a week. Swim lessons are included with qualified WSI-certified instructors at the YWCA four times a week. Students will progress through required levels established by the American Red Cross. Students are required to bring a swimsuit, towel, slippers and a change of clothes for swim lessons. Creative Movement Tuesday & Thursday, 2:15-3 p.m. – Grades K-2 Monday & Wednesday, 2:15-3 p.m. – Grades 3-6 Instructors from Drill Team Hawaii will offer students an authentic experience for beginning students to explore movement and expression through dance.

Students will create their dishes on their own with little or no help from adults. Each student will create their own cookbook to record their tasty creations. Arts & Crafts Monday & Wednesday, 2:15-3 p.m. – Grades K-2 Tuesday & Thursday, 2:15-3 p.m. – Grades 3-6 Come join the fun in the afternoon! Create amazing art as you explore different mediums, textures and colors while looking at our community and the world around us. S.T.E.M. Adventures – Robotics & Coding Monday-Thursday, 12:45-3 p.m. – Grades 3-6 Robotics Lego Robotics Adventurers will have the chance to brainstorm, design, create and program numerous Lego NXT creations. Students will learn the principles of gear ratios for spin art, investigate sensor-based robotics building. Robots will walk, talk (roar, hiss, or cluck actually!), become zoo animals and challenge each other in the ever-popular Sumo Robotics Challenge. Ready, set, create! Coding This beginning coding class will introduce students to the basics of coding and interactions with the physical world through the Scratch Programming Language. Some of the concepts that will be covered include functions, loops, if statements and syntax. You will also learn how to animate and control a sprite, as well as create a physical control for your program. Your journey to coding starts today!

British & World Literature June 17-July 26, 8 a.m.-Noon – Grades 11-12, 1 credit Through reading, writing, oral communication, critical analysis and creative interpretation, students will trace and explore the development of the English language and its impact on the world of literature. British & World Literature will introduce students to selected classics in British & World Literature, emphasize the importance of writing, and prepare students for college. Throughout the course, students will hone their skills in dramatic reading and presentation, as well as develop their skills in critical oral interpretation. Students will engage in independently designed creative and critical oral activities. Fitness for Life June 17-July 26, 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 9-12, ½ credit This course is designed to help students learn about the health-related physical fitness components and benefits of healthy lifestyles, including regular physical activity and sound nutrition. This course will feature activities that can be used for a lifetime and help students find and plan activity programs appropriate to their individual needs. Geometry June 17-July 26, 8 a.m.-Noon – Grades 9-12, 1 credit This intensive course is an in-depth, formal study of the ideas of geometry. Topics include inductive and deductive reasoning, tools of geometry, line & angle properties, triangle & polygon properties, circles, area, Pythagorean Theorem, volume and surface areas. Students will have the option of earning Honors Distinction by following a list of qualifications determined by the instructor and the department. Prerequisite is Algebra I and department approval. High School Course Descriptions Credit Courses Hawaiian History June 17-July 26, 10 a.m.-Noon – Grades 10-12, ½ credit This course studies the history of our state. It begins with the arrival of the first Polynesians to Hawai‘i and traces its rich history through the monarchy, missionaries, overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom and statehood. It also focuses on Hawaiʻis government, economics and social history. Weekly field trips to key sites in Hawaiian history will take place to bring history alive. HS PE – Circuit Training June 17-July 26, 12:15-1:30 p.m. – Grades 9-12, ½ credit Designed for students who already have a background and/or knowledge of sports, high school physical education (PE) will provide a variety of sports activities to enhance each student’s physical fitness level, skill development and game strategies. Students will gain knowledge of team and lifetime sports through game and tournament play. The department’s goal is to provide opportunities for peer socialization, thereby allowing for leadership and sportsmanship qualities to develop regardless of skill level. Various fitness activities such as aerobic/boot camp, strength and agility training will be used to develop a student’s cardiovascular training. HS PE – Yoga and Hiking June 17-July 26, 1:45-3 p.m. – Grades 9-12, ½ credit Through creative play, breathing exercises, yoga postures and relaxation, students explore the physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga in a fun-filled learning environment. Teens can receive enormous benefits from yoga. Yoga enhances flexibility, strength, coordination, balance, posture and body awareness; and concentration, sense of calmness and relaxation and sense of well-being also improve. In yoga, students exercise, play, and connect more deeply with their inner self. We will also develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds us as we practice yoga once a week in the great outdoors. Independent Study – Technology June 17-July 26, Flexible – Grades 9-12, ½ credit This course will expose students to computer hardware, operating systems, programming languages, graphic design, and networking. Students will re-assemble and disassemble a computer, design logos, and learn other basic computer fundamentals. This course has a flexible schedule with students required to complete a total of 60 hours on site. Introduction to Computer Programming June 17-July 26, Online – Grades 9-12, ½ credit A project-based course that covers the fundamentals of computer programming, including data structures and algorithms. Through the study of multiple programming languages, students will gain proficiency in problem-solving using arrays, conditional structures and iteration. During the second half of the course, students will complete an independent programming project of their choosing. PreAlgebra June 17-July 26, 8 a.m.-Noon – Grade 9, 1 credit In this course, students will review the basic skills of PreAlgebra to prepare for Algebra I. Topics include fractions, negative numbers, proportions, linear equations, inequalities, exponents, functions and graphs. Application of algebra skills is emphasized. Updated March 1, 2019

High School Course Descriptions Credit Courses U.S. Government June 17-July 26, Online – Grades 11-12, ½ credit This course examines the people, documents, institutions and events that have shaped American government. Particular emphasis is placed on the history and structure of the U.S. Constitution. In addition, both civil and criminal law is reviewed. The goal is to create well-informed voting citizens with an understanding of their rights and responsibilities. United States Government will be offered online and cover the same topics through online discussions and modified assignments designed to fit the online learning curriculum. While this is an online class the instructor will have set hours available to chat online through Canvas. The instructor will also be available in person on set days for students that might be struggling or simply need clarification. Department approval is a prerequisite for this course. Supplies: Textbook will be required for this course. World Cultures & Religions June 17-July 26, 8-10 a.m. or Online – Grades 9-12, ½ credit In this introductory survey of religious traditions, students explore, observe and analyze across cultures and through time, the central human phenomenon of being religious. For the online class the instructor will have set hours available to chat online through Canvas. The instructor will also be available in person on set days for students that might be struggling or simply need clarification. Online option requires department approval.
