FROM THE CEO Welcome to the Spring 2021 Edition of the St Andrew’s News. I am very pleased to bring you this edition and share with you stories from our wonderful hospital community at a time when remaining positive, is so very important.
One of our busy areas in the hospital is our orthopaedic service. In this edition we outline the range of services and our team of highly respected orthopaedic surgeons operating at St Andrew’s. Tailored to each patient from our pre-admission clinic to the aftercare provided by our experienced nurses on the fourth floor, our orthopaedic team provides the best patient outcomes for your orthopaedic requirements.

MY ST ANDREW’S “IT’S JUST PART OF US ALL”
Sharon joined St Andrew’s as a kitchen casual in the busy Dietary Services team in July 2018. Her role in the daily buzz of the kitchen was preparing and providing hot meals and refreshments. Sharon so enjoyed working at St Andrew’s that, not long after starting at the hospital, she successfully applied for a permanent position in the Dietary Services department. The St Andrew’s kitchen staff help deliver over 142,000 meals to patients every year and double that in morning and afternoon tea always delivered with a friendly hello and smile. Many hospital staff know Sharon from the staff cafeteria, providing everyone from the CEO to visiting contractors with a delicious selection of food for lunch and dinner. Sharon has seen some big changes during her time with the hospital, including the upgrade of the staff cafeteria as well as the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 which saw some restructure of services. During this time, always willing to lend a helping hand, Sharon spent sometime in the St Andrew’s coffee shop. ‘I really enjoyed my time in the coffee shop, especially getting to know the wonderful volunteers’, she said. In addition to her Dietary Services duties, Sharon is a health and safety officer for her department, acting as a representative between the Dietary Services team and the Work Health

Safety Division, assisting with hazard and incident reporting, workplace injury support, and the review and implementation of SOPs. She takes pride in looking out for the welfare and safety of her colleagues and in helping to make positive changes to their work area. Like many staff at St Andrew’s, Sharon reflects that her co-workers are a great group. ‘I enjoy seeing new staff join the team, and especially their reaction when CEO Stephen Walker comes to the cafeteria for lunch, addressing each staff member by name.
‘I’m planning to stay till I’m 70; it’s the people, the daily interactions and fun we have. It is the best job I’ve ever had.’ When next visiting the new staff cafeteria, please say hello to Sharon, and perhaps enjoy a delicious meal prepared by the Dietary Services team.

years at St Andrew’s. Rob will continue to see patients in the breast clinic but has relinquished his theatre time. Combined, these surgeons have given many hours operating at St Andrew’s and ensuring great
outcomes for so many patients. They will be missed around our theatres, but will always remain a valued part of the St Andrew’s community.

Whilst not retiring, Susan Neuhaus is ‘pivoting’ after coming to St Andrew’s as a surgeon when she was starting out in surgical practice. St Andrew’s soon became her ‘home hospital’ and, over almost two decades has been her base for operating on general surgical patients and patients with complex malignancies. Susan wrote, ‘When I look back to the early days when my now-adult children used to accompany me on weekend ward rounds in their prams, I realise that a great deal has changed. In recent years particularly, new treatments and new technologies have seen some of the operations I considered routine early in my consultant career, entirely replaced by earlier diagnosis, new targeted medical therapies, or minimally invasive surgery. ‘However, despite the dramatic pace of change, the character of St Andrew’s has remained one that puts the patient at the heart of all it does. I have been privileged to work in many hospitals yet find St Andrew’s possesses a unique camaraderie. My patients and their families, many of whom faced daunting treatment for cancer, have commented about how safe and cared for they have felt here a testament to St Andrew’s being a place “…where life is taken care of”. ‘As I now transition to a new phase of practice, I hope that I will still be able to contribute to St Andrew’s through the Research Ethics Committee, and even make the occasional ‘guest appearance’ in the operating theatres from time to time. ‘On behalf of not just myself, but the many patients who have found their way through the hospital doors, I would like to warmly thank each of you for your friendship, your support and your ongoing commitment, care, and compassion.’
We wish Susan all the very best in this next phase.

After graduating from a Bachelor of Nursing in 2000, Dale recognised his passion early and undertook a Graduate Diploma in Perioperative Nursing. Following this study, Dale became an educator in the perioperative area and eventually moved into management, culminating with completing a Masters of Business Administration. Prior to joining St Andrew’s, he has worked as the Deputy Director of Clinical Services at Calvary Central Districts Hospital and most recently Calvary Adelaide Hospital. Dale is passionate about assisting in the improvement of patient care within the perioperative specialty. PATIENT STORY LESLIE BARRATT
Mr Leslie (Les) Barratt - ‘that’s Barratt with an A, the Irish version’ - is no stranger to a hospital visit or two. Les, originally from Port Pirie, is a bit of a character and a typical hard-working family man. He is now looking forward to retirement with his wife Dianne, enjoying fishing and caravanning and time with his four adult children and five grandchildren. Les’ orthopaedic journey began 10 years ago when he first underwent a full hip replacement before retiring from his fulltime position with a line marking company in 2017. Les said, ‘I’m always a bit apprehensive about other hospitals. St Andrew’s stands out; it’s the care, the personal care, and all the staff right down to the trainee nurses are all so caring and polite.’ In preparation for his recent right knee revision, Les had to return to St Andrew’s for various knee surgeries. This preparation meant Les had a 120-day-stay at St Andrew’s last year. It was during this stay that Les came to know many staff on the fourth floor. ‘You get to know everyone like family; the fourth-floor staff are a group of beautiful people and I have nothing but praise for them.’ Whenever Les stays on the fourth floor, he often feels like a celebrity on arrival. ‘All the staff are so welcoming - like long lost friends.’ Along with the staff, Les has formed great friendships with some of the other long-term patients. ‘It is just so nice’, he exclaimed. The day we spoke to him, Les’ wife Dianne, had taken him out for a buffet lunch. He said, although he thoroughly enjoyed the outing, the food was nowhere near as good as St Andrew’s.

Les was back at the hospital for his knee revision in August. Again, his troublesome knee presented a challenge where ‘spacers’ were inserted before the revision. Les has only recently returned home. Recovering at home, Les reports everything is going to plan. He is feeling good, but understands how careful he must be during the recovery period, continuing his exercises and physiotherapy.
Thanks to the highly-skilled and experienced care from his surgeon Tom Savvoulidis and our nursing teams, Leslie is a few weeks away from a successful recovery. As well as enjoying some time with their grandchildren, Les and Dianne plan to hook up the caravan, pack the fishing gear, and hit the road in November. On parting, Les says, ‘I reckon they’ll miss me on the fourth floor ...’

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations go to both Cathryn Tang and Sally Tabios who have passed their HIMAA (Health Information Management Association of Australia) Certificate IV coding exam. Achieving this milestone, whilst also working in nursing/ward clerk positions at the hospital over the past two years, is testament to their hard work and diligence. Over the past six months, Cathryn and Sally have both been on short part-time placement in the coding unit in observer roles to increase their understanding of the coding role, and Codefinder software etc. The HIMAA coding coursework and
assessments, involving more than 850 hours over the two-year period, was undertaken by both girls in their own time. Each of them demonstrated a high level of interest and commitment to moving into the coding field. They are now completing the final cluster of training in the course, covering general workplace knowledge, prior to being awarded the Certificate IV in Clinical Classification in midAugust 2021. The HIMAA Cert IV clinical coding course provides the theoretical grounding to clinical classification processes and standards. Recently qualified coders require a further

At St Andrew’s Hospital, we understand how important it is to have meaningful conversations with our patients. On worldwide ‘What matters to you?’ Day, Wednesday June 9, we raised awareness by sharing cupcakes amongst our staff at the hospital. The aim of this day is to encourage and support more meaningful conversations with patients and families who receive healthcare, and with staff, physicians and volunteers who provide it. Asking ‘What matters to you?’ is about listening and understanding what matters to a patient within the larger context of their life. Engaging with their healthcare decisions can greatly improve patients’ outcomes.

Welcome Welcome to the latest edition of the Foundation News. 2021 has been another interesting year and the foundation team has continued to adapt and embrace the “new normal” that currently faces us all. The past few months have seen some changes in the foundation’s office. We said goodbye to Foundation Director, Amy Bredon, at the end of July. Amy had provided outstanding leadership to the foundation over the past six and half years. She developed both the Waverley Network and Hay Society groups and maintained strong relationships with our donors and partners. Amy leaves the foundation with a solid
framework in place for the future, and we thank her most sincerely for her commitment to the foundation, wishing her the very best in her new endeavours. We also farewell Patron David Klingberg AO and welcome our new Patron, Mrs Lan Le. We extend our warmest gratitude to David for his time, commitment to, and wonderful support of the foundation during his term. In this edition of our newsletter, we can finally announce that Phase 2 of the Paediatric Ward upgrade is now complete, with the final bespoke joinery having been installed in early August. It is now a lovely, bright space for our youngest patients and their carers who stay at St Andrew’s.

Our New Patron Welcome – Mrs Le Lan We are delighted to welcome Mrs Lan Le as the St Andrew’s Hospital Foundation Patron from the 1st October, 2021. After a tremendous seven years of service alongside her husband Hieu Van Le, AC in his role of Governor of South Australia, we are honoured to have Mrs Le accept this position.
Lan, born in Da Nang, Vietnam, arrived in Australia with her husband Hieu Van Le in 1977. She attended the South Australian Institute of Technology and, in 1985, graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work. For 30 years, she worked as a social worker and rehabilitation consultant in various Commonwealth Government departments. Within these positions, Lan gained extensive experience and knowledge in both client service delivery and team management. She also received several Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service (CRS) Australia National awards.

In 1997, she was the recipient of the Australia Day Achievement Award for her outstanding and consistent contribution to CRS Australia client services.
Lan says, ‘I am honoured to serve as the new Patron of the St Andrew’s Hospital Foundation as it embarks on its third decade of service to the hospital.
In 2000, Lan was presented with a CRS Australia National Award for Excellence for her contribution to quality service delivery and team leadership.
‘I am passionate about the foundation’s work, providing state-of-the-art equipment and funding training and development opportunities for staff.
Most recently, as the Governor’s wife, Lan developed and maintained effective relationships with various organisations, as well as providing patronage support to more than 35 organisations, supporting their missions, programs and services.
‘I look forward to bringing my experience as a social worker, rehabilitation consultant and spouse of the Governor of South Australia to this role, and to getting to know everyone in the St Andrew’s community.’
Lan was recently awarded Life Membership of Palliative Care SA and Cystic Fibrosis SA. She is also an Honorary Member of The Rose Society of SA and ambassador for both Grandparents for Grandchildren and The Memorial Hospital’s Centenary Celebration.
We take this opportunity to again extend a very warm welcome to Mrs Lan Le from everyone within the St Andrew’s community.
After a tremendous seven years of service alongside her husband Hieu Van Le, AC in his role of Governor of South Australia, we are honoured to have Mrs Le accept this position.

2021 Breast Cancer Annual Appeal We are excited to announce this year’s Annual Appeal has raised $85,000 of our targeted $100,000 towards the purchase a Faxitron High Definition (HD) Specimen Radiography System. The benefits to both surgeons and breast cancer patients are significant. The specimen radiography system provides clarity on what the surgeon can see during surgery. This allows the removal of the correct amount of cancerous tissue improving both cancer and cosmetic outcomes for the patient. We still need help to raise the extra $15,000 to acquire the Faxitron which will ensure the best possible outcomes for our breast cancer patients. All donations, no matter how large or small, will help us reach our target. Please support the hospital that cares for you and your family.

Fun Bun Morning Tea On Thursday 24th June, the foundation provided hospital staff with a morning tea to raise funds for the 2021 Annual Appeal. Thanks to Kirin and Nick from Baker’s Delight Edwardstown for their support in donating 400 fresh fun buns for our staff to enjoy. Our aim was to raise a minimum of $500 from gold coin donations throughout the morning in support of the 2021 Annual Appeal to purchase of a Faxitron Imaging System (for theatres) that will benefit many future breast cancer patients. With the help of our wonderful staff, the total of $685 raised, happily exceeded our expectations.

Annual Appeal Update
Projects Update Paediatric Ward We are delighted to announce that the Paediatric Ward refurbishment is now complete. The addition of the bespoke daybeds was the ward’s finishing touch, and we are thrilled this light, bright and purpose-built room is now available to our paediatric patients. Thank you to our donors whose support from the beginning of this project, especially during the difficulties of last year, was inspiring. The successful completion of this project is a testament to the community’s continued, generous support of St Andrew’s.
Save the Date – Pink & Blue Swim/Walk 2022 Next year’s Pink & Blue Swim/ Walk will be held on Saturday 12 of February 2022. This is the event’s 10th anniversary and the last to be held in the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s existing club rooms. Over the nine events, this great community event has raised more than $325,000 towards both Breast Care Services at St Andrew’s Hospital and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and hosted over 5,000 participants. A magnificent effort!
Funds received from the 2021 event will enable the hospital to refurbish the 3rd Floor Patient and Visitor kitchen/lounge area, benefiting not only our breast cancer patients but also our prostate cancer patients as they are admitted to the hospital. Note the date in your diary, and come along and support the amazing crew at the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club and their fantastic fundraising efforts for Breast Care Services at St Andrew’s.
National Volunteers Week – 17 to 23 May, 2021 This year, we celebrated National Volunteers Week with a movie afternoon at the Regal Theatre on Wednesday, 19 May, 2021. Our CEO, Stephen Walker, welcomed the group and helped present Years of Service certificates to our volunteers who had recently reached significant milestones. Volunteer Coordinator Valerie Turnbull, worked hard to organise a fantastic COVID safe event.
Those who attended enjoyed individual grazing boxes, Jaffers and a beverage whilst relaxing and enjoying an afternoon viewing of June Again. Volunteers are truly an important part of our St Andrew’s Foundation community. We welcome seeing their friendly faces in the coffee shop and around the hospital, and we thank them for the vital role they play.
