Your Visit There are many unique sights to take in when you visit St Albans Cathedral, making it a stunning setting for events, tours and concerts. Opening Times The Cathedral is open all year round 8.30am – 5.30pm. Entry is FREE. All donations are gratefully received. Occasionally additional services and events will be added at short notice. Visitor Highlights St Albans Cathedral is a great place to visit for the whole family – whatever the weather! From the longest nave in England to a jam-packed events programme, there is plenty to see and do. The Shrine of Saint Alban The Shrine of Saint Alban is a site of national pilgrimage. People have been coming here for over 1700 years and it is used as a place of prayer and stillness by visitors every day.

The Shrine of Saint Amphibalus The Shrine of Saint Amphibalus recently underwent a monumental conservation project and is now back in the Cathedral for all to see. St Albans Cathedral is the only cathedral in the country with two restored medieval pedestal shrines.

The Norman Tower

Our Norman Tower is the only 11th Century great crossing tower still standing in England today. It is also the only cathedral tower in England to be built using Roman bricks. You can explore our tower on one of our Tower Tours, see page 22. Be transported back in time as you take in the stunning medieval wall paintings - the best preserved collection in any English Cathedral. You can see the wall paintings in the Nave restored to their former glory with unique light projections during Daily Guided Tours.

Easter at the Cathedral The Cathedral pulls out all the stops at Easter to celebrate the joy of resurrection and the promise of eternal life. This January, we welcome the beautiful illustrations of Quentin Blake to the Cathedral. The BFG in Pictures is an exhibition by House of Illustration, curated by Quentin Blake.

The BFG in Pictures Friday 7 January - Thursday 27 January

Get up close and personal to Quentin Blake’s iconic illustrations. The BFG in Pictures is an exhibition of Quentin Blake illustrations, prepared for Roald Dahl’s classic story The BFG. The exhibition, curated by Quentin Blake himself, will contain 40 reproductions of original artworks, including rarely seen unpublished illustrations of the BFG. The BFG in Pictures is an exhibition from House of Illustration, curated by Quentin Blake. Free admission The BFG in Pictures will be open every day 8.30am - 5.30pm.

Experience The BFG in Pictures with a 90 minute guided session with our Artist in Residence, exploring Quentin Blake’s illustrations, our medieval wall paintings, and a workshop where children will learn how to draw in the style of Quentin Blake. Adult Learning Sketching Evening Tuesday 11 January, 6pm - 8pm To coincide with the exhibition, we will be hosting an informal sketching evening where you can take inspiration from Quentin Blake’s much-loved drawings of the BFG. There is no need to book - just turn up and draw! Dream Country - An Adventure in Creative Writing We are pleased to be able to offer this creative writing workshop from local writer and teacher Clare Hobba. Participants will be encouraged to explore what it is that inspires them to write and will be given the opportunity to produce and share their own short piece of work. Music Music has been central to the life of the Cathedral for centuries. Join us this New Year for a magnificent programme of concerts and recitals. Handel Coronation Anthems Saturday 12 February, 7.30pm The Sixteen Choir & Orchestra One of Handel’s first tasks as a naturalised British Citizen was to write the music for the Coronation of the new monarch, King George II. The result was four majestic anthems, perfectly capturing the pomp and grandeur of the occasion, and a celebration of baroque at its grandest, its most opulent and its most glorious. Lea Singers 60th Anniversary Concert Saturday 12 March, 7.30pm The jewel in the crown of Russian Orthodox sacred choral music, Rachmaninov’s Vespers stands as one of the greatest works ever written for unaccompanied voices. The Lea Singers add evocative poetry appropriate to the times of day at which the Vespers movements would have been sung. Passiontide Service Sunday 3 April, 6pm A powerful meditative service of music, poetry and prayer, marking the start of Passiontide. Sung by the Cathedral Girls Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir.

Palm Sunday Procession Sunday 10 April, 9.30am Meet by the Clock Tower on the High Street, ready to set off for the procession to the Cathedral. Bring a branch or some greenery from home to wave as we walk and recall Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem.

Address & Compline Monday 11, Tuesday 12 & Wednesday 13 April, 8pm We continue our walk through Holy Week with a daily service of compline, at which the Holy Week preacher gives a talk.

Maundy Thursday Thursday 14 April Chrism Eucharist, 11am

A sung Eucharist, gathering together the clergy and lay ministers throughout the diocese for an act of commitment to ministry and the blessing of the holy oils for use throughout the following year. Sung by the Cathedral Choir. Maundy Eucharist, 8pm This service includes the priest washing the feet of some of the congregation to recall what Jesus did at the last Supper, and after the service there is a watch until midnight to recall the long agony of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane that night. Sung by the Cathedral Girls Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir.

Good Friday Friday 15 April Children’s Service, 10am Join us for this Good Friday service aimed at primary school children. Through crafts, music, and storytelling, we will journey with Jesus to the Cross. Three Hours Devotion 12pm-1.30pm Preaching of the Passion 1.30pm-3pm The Liturgy of Good Friday sung by the Cathedral Choir. Unity at the Cross, 8pm An ecumenical service led by Churches Together in St Albans.

Easter Eve Saturday 16 April Evensong, 4pm Sung by the Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir. Easter Vigil, 8pm The first service of Easter begins quietly in darkness but ends in joyful light and noise. Includes baptisms and confirmations from across the diocese.

Easter Day Sunday 17 April On the Sunday Jesus’ disciples found his tomb was empty, then met and ate with the risen Jesus. Easter celebrations continue with festival services through the day to celebrate the joy of Resurrection and the promise of eternal life. Parish Eucharist, 9.30am Sung by the Cathedral Choir. Easter Monday Pilgrimage

The Alban Bun – The Original Hot Cross Bun For nearly 700 years, the Alban Bun has been a part of the Easter tradition at St Albans Cathedral. This predecessor of the Hot Cross Bun is said to originate in St Albans, where Brother Thomas Rocliffe, a 14th Century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed an original recipe and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday, starting in 1361. These delicious buns are best served toasted and with butter!

The Alban Bun will be available to buy this Easter from the Abbot’s Kitchen.

Ecumenical Services The Cathedral also has a thriving Ecumenical Chaplaincy, regularly holding services for different Christian traditions. Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated every Friday at 12noon. German Lutheran A service in German is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 7pm.

The Journey to the Cross Thursday 3 March - Friday 8 April Explore Lent a bit differently through this contemporary, fine-art telling of Jesus’ journey through Jerusalem to Calvary and his crucifixion, death and burial. The stations invite contemplation and reflection, enabling us to bring our life experiences into our prayer. Schools Join our Artist in Residence for a 90 minute session which includes a guided tour of The Journey to the Cross exhibition, and a workshop where pupils respond artistically to the exhibition. Oaklands College Exhibition Thursday 21 April - Thursday 28 April Oaklands College students in the Art, Fashion and Design department are excited to exhibit in St Albans Cathedral. The pieces on display are a result of their recent visit where they were encouraged to take inspiration from the building and it’s hidden spaces.

Family Fun There are plenty of fun activities, events and interactive experiences to keep our young visitors entertained. Family Discovery Mornings Brilliant Books! Thursday 17 February, 10am - 12.30pm With World Book Day taking place at the start of March, we are celebrating some wonderful and famous stories in this activity trail, including Harry Potter and tales by Dick King Smith and Roald Dahl. Dress up as a character from your favourite book as you explore the Cathedral, before making a piece of fabulous art and craft. Easter! Thursday 7 April, 10am - 12.30pm There are a number of wonderful traditions linked to Springtime and Easter, from rolling down hills to creating giant omlettes! See what you can find out as you explore the Cathedral before making a fantastic piece of art and craft to take home. Our free Family Discovery Mornings are aimed at children aged 3 - 11. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Get some fresh air and explore the grounds of St Albans Cathedral this spring with our family friendly tree trail! Discover the history of some of the city’s most ancient trees and find out all about their uses and symbolism. Tree Trails are available daily in the Cathedral Shop for £2.

Abbey Tots Tuesdays, 10am Meeting on Tuesday mornings, this popular parent and toddler group is open to all. Come along and join these weekly get togethers with toys, drinks and snacks followed by a little singsong for pre-school children and their parents or carers. Offa Room, free, tickets required.

STOMP Thursdays, 10am This service for pre-school age children includes Bible stories, songs, instruments, music and prayers - as well as a light picnic for children and their teddy bears! 20

Tree Trails

Cathedral activities Available daily in our exhibition area, young visitors can enjoy interactive screens to take a look behind the scenes, brass rubbing, and have fun dressing up! Tower Tours Climb the 211 steps up to the top of the oldest Cathedral tower in Britain and experience fantastic views of St Albans. Go behind closed doors and explore the roof spaces and visit the ringing and bell chambers, before the final climb onto the roof of the tower (weather permitting). Saturday 9 April

Evening Pilgrimages Evening Pilgrimages offer a guided walk through the Cathedral, accompanied by historical insights, prayers, and silence. Visits start with light refreshments in the Abbot’s Kitchen, and end with Compline by candlight and a visit to the shrine of St Alban. Abbey by Night These candlelit experiences are a rare chance to be transported back in time and explore the stories of the medieval Abbey. Meet both monks and pilgrims to whom this great Abbey was a home and a centre for learning and worship. Dates: 26 January, 9 and 23 February, 9 March. Science as God’s Gift, Not the World’s Threat Wednesday 9 March, 7.30pm, Alban Room and Online via Zoom Following on from his installation as Honorary Canon Scientist in November, Professor Tom McCleish will be delivering his inaugral lecture in March. He will consider the Book of Job from a scientific perspective and will aim to challenge and reconcile some of the ingrained divisions and tensions that exist between science and religion. An Evening with Annie Garthwaite, author of ‘top pick’ historical novel CECILY Wednesday 23 March, 7.30pm, Alban Room and Online via Zoom Selected as a ‘top pick’ historical novel by The Sunday Times, Annie Garthwaite’s debut novel CECILY explores the fascinating and often overlooked life of Cecily Neville. A woman at the heart of the Wars of the Roses, the first battle of which was fought in St Albans, Cecily was both politically shrewd and strategically gifted. Ten Questions that Artificial Intelligence Raises for Believers Monday 21 March, 7.30pm, Online via Zoom. Join the Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull as he delves into the fascinating yet increasingly complex world of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) This talk will consider some of the practical, ethical and theological questions raised by A.I. and will attempt to formulate an appropriate faith response to such questions. Romantics, Pre-Raphaelites and Fairies: from William Blake to E.R. Hughes Saturday 26 March, 10.30am - 3.30pm Join us for this study day as we delve into the world of the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood and the fascinating genre of fairy painting. We are excited to be welcoming Professor Tim Boatswain, Professor Geraint John, and Dr Carol Jacobi to our Adult Learning department and look forward to hearing their insights on the depiction of fairies throughout 19th century European art movements. Library

Open 10am - 2pm Monday - Friday, and 10am - 1pm on the first and third Saturdays of every month The library at St Albans Cathedral is a modern theological lending library which offers members a wide range of resources on topics such as theology, biblical studies, philosophy and ethics. Coming Soon Summer 2022

Our annual Alban pilgrimage returns this summer on Saturday 25 June as the city comes together to celebrate one of the greatest stories in the Christian faith in a truly spectacular way! Enjoy a wonderful spectacle as giant carnival puppets tell the story of the remarkable man who gave the city its name. Roman chariots, centurions, lions and roses all take their place alongside Alban and Amphibalus in a dramatic procession through the historic streets of St Albans. The Alban pilgrimage 2022 will be followed by St Albans Cathedral’s Tudor Summer.
