Breakfast 7:30 – 8:45 Typical meals on dorm include American fare and also a variety of cuisines inspired by our boarding students’ 12 different countries of origin.
Office Hours 8:00 – 8:45 Through the support of expert and caring teachers, most students conduct in-depth research and all students complete an internship prior to graduation. 72% of our faculty members have advanced degrees.

There are 360 students in Grades 9 – 12, with an average class size of 14 and an 11:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Students meet in advisory groups of about 11 students twice a week, with each student keeping the same advisor throughout their Upper School years.
We offer 68 clubs and organizations, ranging from leadership and academic opportunities like Honor Council, Prefect Council, and Model United Nations, to fun interests like gaming club, investment club, and baking club!
Fifth Period 15:00 – 15:30 Time to meet with your teachers, get tutoring help, participate in co-curricular activities, and hold club meetings is built into the school day, often during “fifth period.”
Athletics and Arts 16:00 – 18:00 All students participate in athletics each year, with 37% of recent seniors going on to play sports at the college level. The majority of Upper School students (90%) choose to participate in a visual or performing art each year.
Dinner and Study Hall 18:45 – 21:00 Supportive faculty, a robust college counseling program, peer tutors, and proctored study halls all contribute to our students; success. We offer 20 AP exams on campus. 1 out of 2 will enroll in a very selective college, those schools with an acceptance rate below 25%.

Good Nights 22:30 There’s plenty of time to hang out, play games, and relax before lights go out! With a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:7 and dorm students organized into “houses,” there’s a genuine sense of care and support in our Residential Life Program.
Our community prioritizes in-person engagement and attention. Boarding students turn in cell phones and other devices each night. Cell phones and wearable devices are not permitted during the school day for any student.

Weekend Activities Day trips to Richmond (one hour away) and D.C. (two hours away), hiking and kayaking, UVA sporting events, shopping at the farmers’ market and the historic downtown walking mall — boarding students take full advantage of our location in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Many students stay after graduation to attend the University of Virginia. Our UVA acceptance rate in 2026 for in-state students was 51% compared to UVA’s global in-state acceptance rate of 22%. In 2026, 100% of our outof-state students were accepted (vs. UVA’s global out-of-state acceptance rate of 10%).
