same time we must acknowledge that many will have lost their employment or are likely to do so in the future. The College works with families to try and ensure that the loss of a job does not compromise their son’s education here. Principal’s Report
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College, Each year the College generates the Annual Strategic Planning Report. This document reflects on the previous school year, compares data with other years and sets strategic goals for the future. A copy of the 2013 report will be available on the College website and for anyone who does not have access to the internet, several hard copies will be available at Reception.
The College Board will be using the information contained in the report throughout the year and especially during the Board seminar when strategic planning takes place.
As a Church we commenced the season of Lent last Wednesday and all of our students attended a paraliturgy en mass on Ash Wednesday. We used the occasion to launch the fundraising for Edmund Rice Day which will take place on 20 March.
Thank you to those parents who assisted us in putting together information packages for Edmund Rice Day. The students have been shown some of the projects which were undertaken with last year’s donations and hopefully the entire St Joseph’s community will once again support those in most need.
Much has been written and speculated about the decline in the manufacturing sector especially in the Geelong region. We had anticipated a possible decline and so in the building of our Trade Training Centre have included offerings for what we hope are jobs of the future in areas such as carbon management and allied health. At the

ATHLETICS DAY ATTENDANCE
We would like to thank parents for their support in ensuring attendance at our House Athletics Carnival was at the level required. The day was a great success and helped to foster House spirit and celebrate as a community.
WELCOME EVENING
Our Welcome Evening for the parents/carers of all students new to the school in 2014 was held last Tuesday evening. Over 300 people attended, the largest group of course were parents of our new Year7s. All present appreciated the opportunity to meet their son’s Homeroom teacher and some of their subject teachers, to meet the parents of other boys in their class and to receive important information to support the boys’ transition to St Joseph’s.
EDMUND RICE DAY
Our most significant celebration of the year, Edmund Rice Day, takes place on Thursday 20 March. The day is celebrated by sharing the Eucharist together, taking part in the cross country / walkathon, sharing lunch and joining in a variety of activities in the afternoon. While the day celebrates the life of the founder of the Christian Brothers, Edmund Rice, its key focus is to raise funds for charitable works in both Australia and East Africa. Can parents please encourage their boys bring in their sponsorship money as soon as possible.

Community Service News
Through community service staff and students of the College truly reflect the College values of Compassion, Innovation and Integrity. Service to the community allows students and staff to display the very core Gospel values that motivated Edmund Rice by helping others who are in need of assistance.
With many staff and students involved in community service, we are displaying through our actions the touchstone of Justice and Solidarity which is outlined in the EREA charter. We have had students and staff out to primary schools each week this term to help with breakfast programs; Year 10 boys visiting aged care facilities, staff providing meals and assisting with Samaritan House, staff and students donating blood and several boys completing community service hours in their own time. Boys have been involved in the recent ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ and helping kids with disabilities surf, just to name a few.
The eagerness to be involved in community service has been overwhelming with boys keen to sign up to help out at various programs and events. Several senior students have formed their own ‘Relay for Life’ teams and we wish them well for this event. Keep up the great work boys because you are really making a difference in people’s lives.

Tri-UMPH is back in 2014 and we need your help!
St Joseph’s College, Sacred Heart College, Clonard College and Saint Ignatius College are uniting yet again on the 5th of September to make poverty history with the third TriUMPH Music Festival.
As our name Tri-UMPH – being an acronym for “Triennially United to Make Poverty History” – suggests, our purpose for the event is to support the universal efforts to make poverty history. Specifically, we will be raising funds for the Teachers’ College in Baccua to train teachers, and also 2 communities in Railaco (the Christian Brothers and the Jesuit mission in Railaco) with a focus on education and youth development. We hope to provide the necessary facilities to ensure a prosperous and peaceful future for people living in poverty in East Timor.
In 2008 and 2011, St. Joseph’s hosted the Tri-UMPH Musical Festival, where many popular performers and artist played to over 4,500 students. Collectively, we raised funds to support pre-school and primary education in Railaco, a small East Timor village, gave financial assistance to a teachers college in Baccau on the north coast of East Timor and promoted and assisted education in Oescusu, a small province west of Dili, the capital of East Timor. The successful music festival was heavily publicized in the region and was plugged on national news stations.
A group of students who have formed the triumph committee have been hard at work for the past 5 months and we would like to take this opportunity to reach out to all families and ask for any assistance you may be able to provide. Obviously this event is a huge event on the school calendar and in order to make it as successful as possible we call upon any parents, families or businesses that may be able to assist in the promotion of our festival.

TRIUMPH FROM A STUDENT’S EXPERIENCE
As a current Year 12 student the last Tri-Umph Festival I attended was in 2011 as a Year 9. To me, it was THE highlight of that year; it was a fantastic day for both entertainment and socialising with the 3 other Catholic schools. It was great to meet new people and also catch up with friends from the other schools who we don’t get to see often. In terms of entertainment there was plenty to do; there were multiple stages on Zampatti Oval with great live music all day. There was also a tent to showcase some of the impressive DJs Joeys has to offer. It was equally as fun to be in the crowd. If you wanted to take a break from all the music there were plenty of quiet spots to relax and hang out with students from the other schools. In addition the food selection was great; there was not only a BBQ, but a whole variety of other foods such as nachos and cakes. Triumph 2011 was one of my fondest school memories and Triumph 2014 is going to be bigger and better yet. You will have a fun day, singing and dancing to great live music whilst meeting new friends and catching up with older ones. Better yet, with each wristband purchase you are funding the ongoing support of training teachers in East Timor and providing much needed funds for school furniture to improve the long term education of all Timorese Students.

YEAR 8 BIN AUDIT
The first audit of the year eight eating area has been completed, revealing the total waste in the area for the week amounting to; 8x120L Waste bins and 2.5x240L Fully Commingled Recycling bins (including weekend activities). This result is greatly improved on efforts at the same time last year (average of 13.3 x 240L bins per year level, per week), however there are still quite a lot of recyclables making their way into the waste bins.

The following article comes from the speech I made at the Ash Wednesday/Edmund Rice Day launch with the addition of Ric Brodick’s story from Uganda:
200 hundred years ago, Edmund Rice was all about giving life to others. His schools taught students employment skills to get them off the streets and out of dire poverty. At the same time, he gave new life to himself by finding a new meaning to it following the devastating death of his wife. He used his wealth to give life to others and chose to live a life of prayer and simplicity. Through this life change, he was able to live out his commitment to God through the example of Jesus.
We continue this example of giving new life through our Edmund Rice Day Walkathon. The funds raised on this day give new life, new hope to those in real need in our world. And through the giving, we have the opportunity to give life to ourselves by giving some of our wealth. Whilst we all live in different circumstances, the wealth we have in material goods is enormous compared to those whose stories we hear about from staff who have been to Africa.
One of the stories shared at last Wednesday’s gathering was from Mr Brodrick:
This is Geoffrey. He’s 11 and in Grade 5 at St Nicholas Primary School. His cheeky smile and character have been a common link through all three St Joseph’s visits to Mannya. Everyone remembers and asks about him and his mate Kenny.
Geoffrey lives with his older brother and mum. His dad
died of AIDS about six years ago. Like most Ugandans, his mum is a half-acre subsistence farmer – you eat what you grow.
Geoffrey helps out by catching, breeding and selling rabbits. He gets about 40 cents for each, and he has about ten on the go at the moment. He fetches water from a well with two 20 litre containers.
His English is great because he spends so much time with the visiting bazungu. In some ways his simple life seems happy and uncomplicated, coming and going as he pleases. He wants to go to university and to travel. He needs to sell about 12,000 rabbits to do so. It probably won’t happen.
This is not just a story. Geoffrey and his mum are real people, just like us, our Edmund Rice sisters and brothers. While they live many miles from our door, they are and should be very close to our hearts.
For every one of the stories we tell, there are many more similar and different stories – stories which we have the capacity through our gift to impact upon. We can live this gift, everybody, every day through our fundraising for Edmund Rice Day.
