We are keen to support the College in any way we can to help provide the best possible facilities, values and educational outcomes for all. St Joseph’s College will always hold a special place in our hearts.

A message from the Principal

Like most institutions St Joseph’s has had to adapt to the challenges of operating in a Covid-19 environment. Our students and staff have shown tremendous resilience in adjusting to periods of remote learning and the demands of having members of each class (and sometimes the teacher!) unable to be at school. We know that flexibility and resilience are prized in the ‘real world’ beyond school and I’m confident that these and other characteristics and skills that our students have developed will hold them in good stead in their adult lives.

Edmund Rice founded the Christian Brothers with a vision that their work would be with those most in need. Late last year we were delighted to have the Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, Prof Iain Martin as our guest at the SJC Foundation’s 25-year anniversary dinner at which he announced that Deakin would provide full fees and support to 5 students from disadvantaged backgrounds for their entire 6 years of study at St Joseph’s through the Access and Aspiration Bursary Program.

The ongoing generosity of the Foundation, The Old Collegians Association and individual donors through our Annual Giving campaign currently provides bursary support for 20 students this year. Our Community and Development Office have set a goal of “50 by 25” and hope to have 50 students attending the College on full bursaries by 2025. St Joseph’s remains faithful to the vision of Edmund.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment, to help us support students whose families are unable to meet the cost of a St Joseph’s education.

The next major project for the College will be an extensive refurbishment of the bluestone block adjacent Queens Rd and the redevelopment of the eastern end of the administration block. We know that many Old Collegians, particularly those who were Boarders, retain a strong affection for the bluestone building and its heritage will be retained in any development. Planning for the project is underway with work expected to commence in 2023.

Building A Better Place

In 2021, the College completed the construction of the Peter Chanel Centre Ground Floor Infill Project. This was the final stage for the Peter Chanel Centre filling in the under-croft area with new teaching and learning facilities. It is now fully equipped to house our entire Year 7 cohort and is a terrific welcoming space for our newest faces to the College.

The project involved adding three large and flexible learning classrooms, an Art/multipurpose room, a purpose-built STEM room to support the teaching of science, technology, engineering and maths along with additional teacher office spaces, toilet facilities and a large open collaborative space supporting breakout initiatives and our Project Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy.

The project was completed by Plan Group Geelong who were also engaged for the first two floors of the building. Despite difficult conditions due to COVID-19 impacting the number of contractors allowed onsite at times, the project was delivered well before the start of the 2022 new school year. The final cost of the project was $2.2M and the building plays a vital role in providing spaces necessary to assist us to move through the next stages of our Master Plan.

The second major project under construction during 2021 was the Carey Oval Pavilion. The project was granted to BDH Constructions under a very competitive tender process and will provide much needed unisex toilets and changeroom facilities in this area of the College. The design also incorporates a kitchenette and large classroom learning space.

The existing shelter structure previously positioned on the build site has also been upgraded and relocated to a section of the oval embankment in order to provide valuable additional shade and another external teaching and learning option for the College. The cost of the project is anticipated to be approximately $1.1M.

The St Joseph’s Cricket club, via a City of Greater Geelong Community Grant are contributing $350K to the building of this wonderful new facility. The completion and handover of the project is anticipated for February 2022.

During 2021 an opportunity arose for the College to acquire the property at 1 Leslie Lane. This was a purchase that had been pursued some years back between the period of 2010-2012, but the approaches by the College were knocked back by the owners. Fortunately, the property was placed on the market for auction in April 2021 and the College managed to negotiate the acquisition before the anticipated auction date.

The land purchased was the last parcel of land not owned by the College on the existing Edmund Rice Campus site and will now be included in any future Master Planning opportunities and decisions going forward.

Continuing to look forward and in line with our Master Planning timings there are no major building projects planned for 2022. Rather, work in this space will be focussed on the scoping, planning and architectural drawings for the redevelopment of the Tom Howe Centre (our Bluestone Arts precinct) and the redevelopment of the rear of the Administration Building so that works may commence for that particular stage of our Master Plan in 2023.

Improving Educational Opportunities

Deakin University was founded on the idea of an accessible, high quality education. It began with our distance education programs in 1974 – a commitment that is written into the Deakin University Act. Our dual commitment to accessibility and excellence in education is very much still at the heart of what we do, and the decisions we make as an organisation. Our new ten year Strategic Plan, Ideas to Impact, puts this commitment up front: “Our pursuit of excellence in education and research is accompanied by a commitment to greater access for aspiring students who face additional barriers.” “We deliver progress across society, prioritising equity and opportunity; we are not defined by those we exclude, but by the opportunities we create.”

We also work with our many partners, in Australia and across the world, to enable flexible and non-traditional pathways into a Deakin education.

The principles of diversity and inclusion underpin Deakin’s overall approach to engagement with our Geelong community and we are truly excited that Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program has enabled us to support five students to attend St Joseph’s from 2022, right to the completion of their schooling.

Deakin and St Joseph’s have a shared commitment to improving educational opportunities for young Australians from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Both truly believe that education is key to overcoming poverty and disadvantage.

The MoU we have recently signed demonstrates this joint commitment to improving equity and opportunity in education.

The five Aspiration and Access Bursaries will cover the school fees of five students to study at St Joseph’s from 2022, for the six years of their secondary schooling (from 2022 – 2027).

The support is for $35,000 per year to cover the five students.

Through these bursaries, we are aiming to increase the

proportion of Australians who are able to access tertiary study, who come from low socioeconomic, regional and remote, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds

We believe that through collaboration, and through opportunity, they can achieve more in pursuit of these goals.

I’d like to once more acknowledge the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) – which has made this program possible.

And of course, my thanks and admiration go to Tony Paatsch, Principal of St Joseph’s College. And Paul McNamara, Chair of the St Joseph’s Foundation.

I look forward to seeing the many positive outcomes of this program in the future and we will no doubt continue to collaborate on more initiatives that improve equity and opportunity in the Geelong community.

On many occasions already, Deakin has engaged closely with St Joseph’s College staff and students.

As but one example, in 2019, Deakin’s School of Architecture and Built Environment hosted around 40 Year 10 students – with them attending workshops based on their career interests in architecture, design and construction.

Deakin’s connection with students of all ages is so valuable.We know that a university education improves career prospects, and so often leads to rich lives of community engagement and contributions.

And the issues our researchers are working on serve as great inspirations to the next generation: everything from climate change to artificial intelligence and robotics, to the work of our sociologists and philosophers and of course, academics in our Health Faculty – epidemiology has never been more relevant or fascinating!

A message from Community & Development

What an interesting year 2021 was, so many highlights during yet another very challenging period of time.

As we have stated before, Fundraising for many people is often seen as a transaction, however at St Joseph’s we endeavour to build long lasting relationships based on trust. Your unwavering support allows the Foundation’s Mission of “delivering the best Catholic education for boys in Geelong” to be fulfilled.

Thank you to each and every person who donated and pledged their support again throughout 2021, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our community who collectively raised in excess of $102,000 through our ‘BE Joey’s’ campaign in June, it certainly makes our role in supporting your community much easier, and knowing that our students will benefit from your generosity.

The Bursary program supported 14 students in 2021, and the impact was seen in multiple ways throughout the school. A difficult story to relay in writing, but a wonderful example of the impact our Bursary program can have happened at the beginning of the 2022 school year. Two students, both new to SJC, were sitting in the College reception early in their Joey’s journey. They had never met previously but the older student immediately offered to help the younger student with his bus timetable and to assist him in making his way to school each morning. Neither of these boys knew the other was receiving financial support through a Bursary, but their connection and support for each other, and stories like this, is what makes it all worthwhile and amazing to see.

It was fantastic to be able to celebrate the Foundation’s 25 year (plus 1) anniversary dinner at the President’s Room at GMHBA Stadium in November. To see many of our supporters join and celebrate this occasion was testament to the connection so many have in the Joeys community.

the Foundation’s timeline. We were honoured to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of longserving founding committee members, Kevin Costa, Peter Rudd and Dr Joe Virgona.

It was also great that our community could come out to enjoy and support the SJC Golf Day, with 260 guests combining to raise over $30,000 for the Bursary Program, and the Parents & Friends Fashion Dinner at Mt Duneed Estate, which raised over $26k for the community we support in Mannya, Uganda.

Thank you to the Foundation committee members who provide guidance and support to the College with their expertise across a number of areas, your input is invaluable. And thank you to the Community and Development team, including Susan Belluzzo, Cameron Ling, Lauren Sedgman, and Natasha Solczaniuk, who together support the SJC Community and our Foundation and its endeavours each year.

In particular to Cameron, who has had a great impact in the role of Manager - Alumni and Philanthropy since the beginning of 2021, he has been an outstanding support to myself in his role over the past 18 months. To come into the role during 2021 and connect through lockdowns, zooms and have the impact he has on our community, has been fantastic. Not only with the Community and Development team, but the unseen work across all levels of our College will be missed. We wish his family all the best for the future and look forward to welcoming Cameron, Nicole, Max, Henry and Ged to the College when they begin their journey at secondary school.

The McNeill Society

From the College’s beginnings in 1935, bequests and other philanthropic gifts have enabled the College to move forward and adapt to changing needs by providing students with new facilities and bursaries.

The McNeill Society has been established by the St Joseph’s College Foundation to recognise and honour those who remember the College in their will. It enables us to thank and recognise – privately or publicly –those for their generosity towards the College. Often St Joseph’s College is not able to thank a donor in his or her lifetime and the McNeill Society allows us to express our gratitude in the here and now.

Our hope is that it will also encourage others to include a gift to St Joseph’s College in their Will.

The McNeill Society has been named after John McNeill, (SJC 1935-1937). A foundation student during the first three years of the existence, John was one of the original House Captains and took full part in all school activities.

Foundation members and solicitors Andrew and Erin Penton have generously offered a FREE WILL writing service for anyone wishing to support the St Joseph’s College Foundation through the McNeill Society.
