Go and do likewise Dear friends, Mercy seems to be the favorite word of our new Pope Francis. He draws on a recent book on the subject by the German theologian, Cardinal Walter Kasper. Kasper points out that in both the Old and New Testaments, mercy is God’s most essential quality. Much more than simply not punishing us for our sins, God’s mercy exceeds justice and in every way treats us infinitely better than we deserve. Kasper dwells on the story of the Good Samaritan, who owes nothing to the man beaten by robbers, and yet he stops and generously shares his time, talent and treasure with the man. And then Jesus ends by inviting us all: “go and do likewise.” (Lk 10.37) This issue of the St. Xavier magazine lists the names of hundreds of generous alumni, parents and friends who have “gone and done likewise.” Grateful for what the school has done for them and for the people they love, they have acted so that this generation of young people can have the St. X experience as well. Aware of the many blessings they have received from God’s lavish mercy to them, they have chosen to share with others. Shakespeare, reflecting on the quality of mercy, wrote, “it is twice blest; it blesseth him that gives and him that takes.” That is my hope and my prayer for our school community. Just as the amazing generosity of our donors has blessed our students, may our many benefactors be abundantly blessed in-turn. May they experience the joy and freedom that comes with “giving and not counting the cost,” and the tremendous satisfaction of “knowing that they do God’s will.” Yours in Christ,

Welcome to the Class of 2018 St. Xavier High School celebrated the first day of school on August 14, 2014 welcoming the 419 members of the Class of 2018. The upperclassmen formally welcomed the freshman class as they joined in their first all-school liturgy, the Mass of the Holy Spirit held on Friday, September 12, the spiritual beginning of the school year. President Fr. Tim Howe SJ celebrated the Mass alongside other priests in the area including Bill Verbryke SJ (’71) as well as Fr. Ed Pigott SJ (’55), Fr. Denny Ahern SJ (’56), Fr. Rick Milbourn SJ (’86) and Fr. Paul O’Connor SJ. Students and faculty added to the highlights of the event through music and praise bringing a special opening to the 2014-15 school year.

St. X Front-runners in the National Merit Semi-finalist Competition The results are in for the National Merit Semi-finalist program. This year St. Xavier finished as the top all-male high school in the state of Ohio with 17 semi-finalists. Adopt-A-Family As the St. X community prepares for this year’s Canned Food Drive, enjoy this reflection from a parent about his family’s experience “adopting” a family through the Adopt-A-Family program. (paraphrased) “We had signed-up to provide food for a family in need, and my entire family participated in the process. My kids helped gather the food, and then all of us were scheduled to deliver to the family on the assigned day. At the time, my teenage daughter had been pestering my wife and me about attending a concert. We told her “no,” yet she continued to ask about it. Finally, she stormed up to her room. When the day arrived for us to deliver to our adopted family, my entire family took part, with my daughter still very much sulking about not being able to attend the concert. We delivered the food, and we had a good conversation with the family. My entire family was surprised at how little they had. It certainly made an impression on us, and we were grateful for the opportunity to deliver food that morning. Later that afternoon, my daughter came downstairs from her room, and said quietly, ‘Dad, I don’t need to go to that concert.’ Afterwards, she fully participated in our family dinner. I had no doubt that she was impacted by the Adopt-A-Family delivery experience. She recognized how much our family has been given, and as a result of making that food delivery, she got a glimpse of how others are really struggling. Development Chairman Eighteen young men have volunteered to be the 2014-2015 Student Development Chairmen. These young men will volunteer a large portion of their free time to help coordinate one of St. Xavier’s largest co-curriculars—the Student Annual Fund Phonathon. These students will assist in organizing the effort of more than 300 of their fellow classmates and St. Xavier students who will donate their time contacting our alumni on behalf of the annual fund.

In addition to helping organize the annual phonathon, this group of seniors will be school ambassadors at a number of development hosted events throughout the school year. Long Blue Line Connects at Alumni Golf Outings Golf Outings for St. Xavier alumni connected many members of the Long Blue Line this fall. Thanks to the work of the Young Alumni Group, more than 120 alumni (graduates between 5 and 15 years) gathered Sunday, August 24 for the Second Annual Young Alumni Golf Outing at Glenview Golf Course. Just weeks later more than 200 St. Xavier alumni gathered Monday, September 8 at Maketewah Country Club to enjoy golf with fellow Bombers for the Annual Alumni Outing. At both events golfers enjoyed a presentation from Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Fund John Schrantz (’96) as well as lunch, dinner, prizes and 18 holes of golf. A big thank you to sponsors for the events including: Home City Ice, The Idea House, Jos. Berning Printing, The Flottman Company, Inc., and Bar & Four Entertainment Group, as well as to the many hole sponsors that helped make both events successful. Theatre Xavier 2014 – 2015 Productions Join Theatre Xavier for another exciting theatrical season.

X-Travaganza Announcing the 42nd Annual X-Travaganza: SUPERHEROES – Xploring Truth, Justice and the Jesuit Way. Preparations for the 42nd Annual X-Travaganza have begun! X-Travaganza staff, Chairs Peg and Joe Halpin, Jean and Cliff Robson and the Executive Committee are already hard at work planning X-Travaganza 2015. X-Travaganza is more than just a dinner auction, funds to support St. Xavier through our Ladies Golf Scramble, Online Auction and Grand Raffle. All of the events under the X-Travaganza umbrella raise funds for academic programs throughout the school year and for students demonstrating the academic skills, but lacking the financial means to attend St. Xavier. With the help of our generous donors, X-Travaganza raised more than $850,000 during the 2013-2014 academic year and contributed to the 34 percent of the student body who received financial assistance. X-Travaganza 2015 weekend begins Friday, March 13 with the Opening Party (formerly First Night) a casual evening chaired by Michelle and Rob Morgan and Jill and John O’Shea. Opening Party offers a sensational buffet, raffles, silent auction and other surprises. Saturday, March 14, 2015 will find many St. X supporters at the annual dinner auction. You don’t want to miss this exciting evening—attended by parents, alumni and friends of St. X—held in the Berning Gym and featuring both an extensive silent and thrilling live auction. If our auctions aren’t enticing enough, all guests are treated to a fabulous sit down dinner and the chance to visit our exclusive gift shop, drink raffle, duck pond and you won’t believe the decorations! It truly takes a village of volunteers to make the auction the spectacular event that it has become!

We kicked off the 2014-2015 school year with the annual Ladies 9-Hole Golf Scramble and Bunco in September. Chaired by Maryanne Cardone and held at Makatewah Country Club, we hosted over 100 ladies gathered for a fun-filled day of golf, bunco, games and prizes. Many wonder how more than 1,500 donations are collected to ensure the success of the auctions. Many items are donated through Gift Gathering Parties, a St. X tradition that brings current parents together in an informal setting to enjoy fellowship while supporting X-Travaganza. Tangible item donations are also welcome any time at the X-Travaganza office: Gift cards to restaurants and retail stores, sports or event tickets (Reds, Bengals, college football, Playhouse or Broadway Series, etc.), signed memorabilia, vacation homes, trips, electronics, St. X items, jewelry, serving ware and décor items. Watch the website for details on X-Travaganza’s Online holiday auction which runs November 26 through December 7, 2014 - a great opportunity to purchase those Christmas gifts. Another fantastic X-Travaganza tradition, Grand Raffle, begins when raffle tickets go on sale in January 2015 and concludes when the winners are drawn at the dinner auction on March 14, 2015 - First Prize: $20,000, Second Prize: $10,000, Third Prize: $5,000. Young Alumni Service Program The Young Alumni Committee held its inaugural community service event at the Mary Magdalen House on September 13. In total, 20 young alums participated and helped give Mary Magdalen House a “face lift” by repainting all of the benches in its shower rooms, cleaning its reception area, and cleaning the exterior of the building. After the event, alumni offered their thanks to the volunteers who help the Mary Magdalen House throughout the year by hosting a cookout in their honor.

A special thank you also goes out to Brian Bailey and the entire team at Sherwin Williams for donating the paint and brushes to help our young alums.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make the event a tremendous success.

STEVE WOLNITZEK (’66)

Northern Kentucky is my community— St. Xavier is my school Steve Wolnitzek (’66) knew, even before he walked the halls of St. Xavier High School, that he would one day make financial contributions to pay his educational experience forward. His father, who only attended school through the seventh grade, believed strongly in a solid education. Very early on, he instilled the belief that to those whom much is given, much is expected. “Through all our educational years, my siblings and I never saw a tuition bill or paid a dime for education,” said Wolnitzek. “My dad always just said ‘do for your kids what I have done for you’, and encouraged us to pay it forward in other ways.” Wolnitzek grew up in Northern Kentucky attending Covington Latin before St. Xavier. He started St. X as a sophomore, following his brother Fred (’64) to become a Bomber during a time where there was a large contingent of young men driving the 75 route to attend high school. “I have always lived in Northern Kentucky, but St. Xavier is my school,” states Wolnitzek. “St. X was a great school when I attended, but it is definitely a much stronger school now.” His St. Xavier education propelled him to Notre Dame and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Because of the success he has seen, Wolnitzek wants more young men from his area to experience the advantages of a St. Xavier education. When rules for athletics changed in Ohio, Wolnitzek became concerned that Northern Kentucky students may not get enough information to consider attending St. X. It is for this reason he joined the board and got more involved with the school. Steve supports the St. Xavier Northern Kentucky information night and is an advocate for the school in his community reminding future Bombers that although the

opportunities for sports may not be available, there is a myriad of opportunities for students if they want an excellent education and the opportunity to become leaders. “St. Xavier generates community leaders,” said Wolnitzek. “I want to support a school that has a commitment to my community.” Wolnitzek’s support for St. X is evident. He began making financial contributions to the school just years after graduation and his impact has grown. He feels that one of the biggest misconceptions about St. Xavier High School is that the institution has all the money they need. “While I was on the board, I more fully understood the need to bridge the gap between tuition and the cost of a St. X education,” explains Wolnitzek. “It was this realization that makes planned giving an obvious choice and the best way to give back.” He encourages other alumni to consider a planned gift and feels that it is a transformational gift to the school. “The impact of a planned gift is much larger than an annual gift,” encourages Wolnitzek. “There are a variety of options, and it is a great way to make a difference.” Just as he has done for his own children, and many students at St. Xavier High School, Woltnizek encourages all Bombers to give back to continue the creation of community leaders and a strong Long Blue Line.

Steve Wolnitzek served on the St. Xavier High School Board of Directors from 2000-2006. While on the Board he served on the following committees as well: Education/Faculty Life (6 years), Development (5 years) and Executive (2 years). The Wolnitzek Long Blue Line includes brother Fred (’64), son Marcus (’95) and nephew Fred (‘01). He is a member of the St. Xavier Society (donors who make substantial gifts to the school) and he and his mother Ruth are both members of the Wieber Society (donors who have made a commitment to support St. X through a planned gift). He is a lawyer in Northern Kentucky at Wolnitzek, Rowekamp & DeMarcus, P.S.C. and is proud to live in and support his Northern Kentucky community.

Bombers Around the US St. Xavier organizes alumni events all over the country, including Cincinnati, to keep the connection between the school community and the Long Blue Line vibrant and active. Bomber alumni know that being a graduate is more than the four years spent on campus; it is an unexplainable bond of brotherhood. Events allow alumni to keep abreast of the successes and challenges going on at the school, and also give those in various parts of the country the ability to connect with other St. Xavier alumni living in the same area. Thank you for your generous support! Thank you for investing in, and believing in, our mission. Our mission: To assist young men in their formation as leaders and Men for Others through rigorous college preparation in the Jesuit tradition. These are not just words that exist on a plaque or on paper. This is the heart and soul of St. Xavier High School and the core of the education the young men entrusted to us will receive. Our faculty and staff live and model this mission as they work with our students on a daily basis. The Grad at Grad: Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Loving and Committed to Justice. These are the characteristics our graduates will acquire during their time at school. Every course, every activity, everything we do here at St. Xavier High School works together toward forming a graduate with these characteristics. I tell everyone I meet with that St. Xavier High School continues to work on being even better at graduating young men who will make their communities, and our world, a better place. The Ignatian Spirituality at our school is as strong as it has ever been, and our students graduate knowing that being a man for others, a servant leader, are what they are called to do. St. Xavier High School is academically and spiritually strong. We have a faculty and staff that believe in the foundation of a Jesuit education and look for ways to give our students the opportunity to experience student leadership in their daily lives at St. X. THE VISION

Our vision is very simply stated, and a major driver in our strategic plan. At St. Xavier High School, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, we are committed to being the rigorous college preparatory school in greater Cincinnati. The school where exceptional boys from diverse backgrounds transform into academically accomplished Men for Others. It is a place where young men are prepared to discern and successfully carry out God’s plan for their lives and to serve as leaders in our rapidly changing world.

High School has that opportunity, regardless of his economic ability to pay tuition. This year we will provide nearly $3.4 million in need based financial aid to 34 percent of our student body. That does not include the $1,000 gap between the cost to educate and the actual tuition for every student. You can see the continuing increase in financial aid need graphed below. All of the tuition assistance granted each year to our students is hard-funded. While this is an expensive endeavor, it is necessary for the students of St. X.

This vision, and our mission, is the driving force for everything we do at St. X. That same vision and mission are important to our alumni, parents and friends of the school. This is evident as we look at the extensive list of donors in this magazine.

For The Greater Good – An Update on the Progress of the St. X Strategic Plan In September 2012, the St. Xavier Board of Trustees formally approved the Strategic Plan, For The Greater Good. It has been our goal to periodically update the St. Xavier community on the progress being made on its implementation. The plan’s “learning-centered” and “relationships matter” themes continue to morph, creating living, actionable paths that serve as a road map as we move forward and continue excelling as one of the finest schools in the country. “I am very pleased with the progress of the Strategic Plan,” said Tom Gill, Chair of the Strategic Plan Committee. “It is a living plan worked on daily by faculty, staff, board members, alumni, students and parents.” GOAL 1: Establish a learning-centered culture. Through the course of the past year, learning teams have been instrumental in incorporating iPads into our curriculum, developing formative assessments and blended learning. These teams also provide the cornerstone support for the rollout of a new annual assessment of faculty to be piloted in the 2014-15 school year. Faculty members have agreed on clearly defined outcomes that best serve our students, as well as common assessments to provide feedback to both the student and the teachers.

GOAL 2: Deepen relationships. Over the past two years, faculty members have been freed up to interact with and support students. A team of faculty and parents devoted much of its effort to define “multi-cultural competency.” They will implement a multi-cultural competency program at St. X. We also are increasing efforts to hire more faculty and staff with multi-cultural backgrounds. Finally, plans are being developed to create a comprehensive leadership plan for students.

GOAL 3: Foster greater growth in faith. This past year a Daily Examen was instituted, during which the entire school community paused for a few minutes (longer on Thursdays) to reflect on the action of God in our lives and our response. Reaction to the Daily Examen has been varied, with some suggesting more time was needed, others more variety and others preferring less frequency. In response to such feedback, this year, the structure was modified to allow for longer silence and variety in the reflection question. We will continue assessing the impact of the Daily Examen. Survey results from parents and students indicate the demands placed on students’ time can be excessive. This year the school community is discerning this issue in an attempt to identify where balance can be achieved and prepare for a new daily order next year that will slow the pace for all. The Bishop’s Framework is being implemented in the Freshman Scriptures course and incorporated into the curricula of the higher grades.

GOAL 4: Attract, develop and retain the best and brightest students from diverse backgrounds. For the 2013-14 school year, the St. X Office of Admissions received applications from 720 students. The average entrance exam result was in the 82nd percentile and 105 students scored a 96 percent or higher. Three percent of our seniors were named as National Merit Scholars and nine percent as Commended Students. Data from student surveys showed 60 percent of students strongly agreed they were satisfied with their growth as a St. X student, and 44 percent strongly agreed their relationship with God grew during their time as a student. The majority of parents (52 percent) strongly agreed they are satisfied with their son’s growth at St. X. These positive statistics are encouraging as the school engages in further efforts to draw diverse, proficient students who recognize the value of their St. X experience.

GOAL 5: Develop and communicate the St. Xavier High School brand. Students, parents, faculty and volunteers helped us articulate the elements of the “St. Xavier Advantage.” The six key elements identified include Men for Others, It’s Cool to Be Smart, Be an Individual and Find Friends, The Long Blue Line, The Examined Life and Cura Personalis (Care for the whole person). These points of difference in the St. Xavier brand are used in our admissions and promotional efforts to differentiate a St. Xavier education from all others.

GOAL 6: Acquire and sustain the appropriate physical and financial resources. The Master Planning Process has worked diligently to refine and create a plan to present to the Board of Trustees in late 2014. This plan will include recommendations for spaces that will provide a flexible learning commons for students. Technology infrastructure, enhanced the last few years to handle the increased volume of users, will continue to expand. Advancement efforts also continue to increase, resulting in significant growth in annual fund raising and long-term commitments. The culture of philanthropy in the St. X community continues to develop, particularly among the faculty and staff with their increased participation in the annual fund efforts.

“There is no question in my mind that, with the progress so far, St. Xavier High School is positively moving forward to provide an educational environment that will not only sustain, but improve the quality of preparation for our students into the future,” said Tom Gill. “Many thanks to all who have been involved so far with the implementation of the St. Xavier High School Strategic Plan.”
