This text is the account of how Moses aided his people in their battle against the Amalekites. He used the same staff he previously used to split the Red Sea when Pharaoh's army was pursuing them. Whenever Moses’ arms were upraised, the Israelites had the better of the fight so Aaron and Hum helped him sustain that posture through the long hours of battle.

This was not some sorcery that Moses uses to control God rather it points to God’s mercy. God remains ever free, but invites us to intercede, that he might manifest his mercy. This is what is seen here. Moses, the nation’s leader, not on his own but with the help of assistants, asks God's help and God concretely manifests it by giving Israel the victory.

Reading 2 2Timothy 3:14-4:2 This text speaks lovingly, knowingly, and wisely of the role God's Word can (and should) play in our lives. Paul writes from prison anticipating death and the text takes on the tone and urgency of a dying man’s final wish. He charges Timothy to proclaim the Word. Paul’s words addressed to Timothy speak just as powerfully today to anyone who remains open to God’s Word and desires that it become the fuel that drives their hearts.

This parable is a lesson in persistence in prayer. While it seems to present prayer as nagging God for what we want, such a reading misses the point. God is not like the judge in the parable, worn down by requests and coerced to respond. The key is found in the description of the judge as corrupt and unjust. Since God can be neither, we must understand Jesus to be saying that if even an unjust judge responds to the persistence of the widow, how much more so will God listen to our prayers.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 18, 2016 ST. LUKE , EVANGELIST St Luke was born a Greek and a Gentile in Antioch, Syria. He was a physician. It is believed that he may have also been a slave, as it was not uncommon, in his day, for slaves to be educated in medicine so the family would have a resident physician. Luke became a close companion of Paul of Tarsus & accompanied him on his missionary journeys, sharing in his sufferings.. Luke is the only Gentile to have written books in the Bible. He is the writer of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. The Saint’s books reveal something about his character. Luke wrote excellent popular prose with an artist’s skill at painting picture stories. Demonstrating an unusual commitment to accuracy, he appears to have fastidiously checked his facts. For example, archaeologists have confirmed many details that he reported in the Acts. Some of Luke’s main themes—prayer, the Holy Spirit, and mercy– suggest that he was a compassionate, spiritual man. He aimed his books to persuade Gentiles that the Christian story was true. It is believed that Luke lived a long life without marrying and that he died at age 84. He was the first Christian physician and was venerated by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of physicians and surgeons. ========================================

Pope John Paul was born Karol Jozel Wojtyla on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was ordained in 1946, became the bishop of Ombi in 1958, and became the archbishop of Krakow in 1964. He was made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1967 and in 1978 became the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years and the first Slavic pope ever. John Paul quickly became a powerful figure. A vocal advocate for human rights, John Paul often spoke out about suffering in the world. He held strong positions on many topics, including his opposition to capital punishment. A charismatic figure, John Paul used his influence to bring about political change and is credited with the fall of communism in his native Poland. As the leader of the Catholic Church, John Paul traveled the world, visiting more than 100 countries to spread his message of faith and peace. He faced the greatest threat to his life in 1981 when an assassin shot him twice.. Fortunately, he was able to recover from his injuries and later forgave his attacker. In his later years as Pope, John Paul’s health appeared to be failing. Parkinson’s Disease was suspected but there was never any official announcement about his illness from the Vatican.
