September 18, 2016 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Amos cries out against those who exploit the poor for the sake of extortion and greed. They seek to serve only themselves rather than the Lord. By giving ourselves to God rather than to money, we can truly pray with blameless hands for all those in need, especially the poor who the Lord will raise up. Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Amos 8:4-7 The prophet Amos prophesied in the northern kingdom of Israel at a time of great economic growth. Greed among some of the wealthy was unabated and Amos challenges their blatant self-indulgence and its attendant hypocrisy. Seasonal and weekly festivals that afforded the poor a brief respite from their labor, were seen by the rich as obstacles to moneymaking. They longed for the holy time to end so they could return to their greed-driven enterprises of tampering and cheating. But Amos declares that God is neither unaware nor unconcerned about the plight of the poor. God is taking note and is ready for action to vindicate the weak and helpless Unfair business practices and injustice to the poor will be judged by God.
Reading 2 1Timothy 2:1-8 Paul is asking that prayers be offered for everyone, including the emperor and “all in authority”. This did not mean worship of the emperor which was expected of subjects and citizens of the Roman empire. Praying for the emperor and other officials, however, laid a blanket of protection over the early Christians and guarded them from close scrutiny. Paul is calling for more than prudent self-interest; he is calling for selfless prayer that ultimately contributes to the common good. Paul understands that God is Lord, not only of Christians and Jews, but of all people, and that he desires all, even pagans, to be saved. God also desires justice and peace to prevail among all people. One way to ensure that is to pray for leaders, no matter their stripe.

Lectura 1 Amós 8:4-7 El profeta Amós profetizó en el reino del norte de Israel en un momento de gran crecimiento económico.
