True wisdom leads us to acknowledge our limitations (a matter of “calculation”) and our idols of materialism as we seek to follow the Lord without reservation True discipleship calls us to forgive those who have wronged us. May we gain wisdom of heart to discern more fully our call to take up the cross of Jesus.

Lectura 1
This text seeks to remind us humans of the great limitations under which we labor. It is hard enough for us to understand human affairs -”scarce do we guess the things on earth” - so seeking to probe those of heaven becomes the sheerest folly. The author poses questions—”who can know… who can conceive …”, trusting our ability to reason and understand. We acknowledge that whatever understanding we have about God was given to us by God. Knowledge alone has limits. We also need wisdom to understand the ways of God . God gave us wisdom and “sent the Holy Spirit from on high”.
Reading 2 Philemon 9-19,12-17 From prison, Paul writes to a leader of the Christian community about his runaway slave whom Paul has met and converted to Christianity.

Gospel Luke 14:25-33 Jesus is speaking about the difficulties of following him; of discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus describes “hating” one’s father and mother, he is not talking about feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a disciple means that everything else—family, money, your life— must come second. Jesus makes it very clear that being a disciple is not easy. It means to bear one’s own cross. He then relates two brief parables that make an obvious point— don’t start what you cannot finish. Discipleship is difficult and is something we can commit to only if we are prepared to put the Kingdom of God before everything else.
