September 25, 2016 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Amos condemns the complacency of the rich who seek only their own comfort. In his parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus echoes Amos, exhorting those who have to share with those who have not. Self-sufficiency must never blind us to the needs of others. Only in this way do we keep God’s commandments in integrity and in truth. Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1
Amos 6:1a, 4-7
Amos in this text, rails mercilessly against the indulgent lifestyle of the wealthy who luxuriate in excess, oblivious to the crying need that surrounds them. The rich feign religious observance, but their rituals become nothing more than excuses for more opulent living. Amos speaks for a God who cares about injustice and won’t stand by as it happens. Sadly, Amos announces, the time for change is passed and the people’s fate is sealed. God will judge the complacency of the people and their leaders.

1Timothy 6:11-16
In this text, Paul exhorts Timothy to stay faithful to God in all things. Paul insists that the “man of God”, an Old Testament title applied to Moses and the prophets, is expected to behave in ways different from the culture. Paul employs strong imperatives both when reminding Timothy of his Baptism celebrated in the “presence of many witnesses,” and when urging the young leader to “compete well’, letting no resistance or obstacles prevent him from staying in the race to the finish line. “Keep the commandment” charges Timothy, and each of us, not to mind any one particular injunction, but to surrender ourselves to the entirety of God’s law until the Lord returns in glory.

Luke 16:19-31
Jesus’ parable presents a rich man even more hardened in self-centeredness after death than he was in life. He calls out to “Father Abraham” and asks for “pity” but he expresses no remorse and is just as eager to use Lazarus in the “netherworld” as he was in life. For him, others exist to be at his service. Abraham reminds the rich man of the good things he had in his life and describes the current situation as a reversal of fortunes. The rich man then asks that Lazarus be sent to warn his family, but this is denied with the reminder that Moses and the prophets have warned of judgement for those who neglect the care of the poor. This story of the rich man and Lazarus demonstrates the importance of the care of the poor and is a reminder to those who would follow Jesus of the unimportance of wealth in the eyes of God. Also we are again told that it is possible to run out of time and that there is no reversing the fate that follows the sounding of the bell. We depend on God’s mercy and forgiveness but what is sometimes overlooked is the need to ask for forgiveness and accept His mercy.

Lucas 16:19-31
Parábola de Jesús presenta un hombre rico aún más endurecido en egocentrismo después de la muerte de él fue en vida. Él llama a "padre Abraham" y pide "Piedad" pero expresa sin remordimientos y es tan deseosos de usar Lazarus en el "inframundo" como lo fue en vida. Para él, existen otros para estar a su servicio. Este relato del rico y Lázaro demuestra la importancia del cuidado de los pobres y es un recordatorio para aquellos que siguen a Jesús de los insignificantes de la riqueza en los ojos de Dios.
