July 24, 2016 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In bargaining with God, Abraham demonstrates a real persistence in prayer. Jesus invites us to persist in prayer as well, to “ask...seek...knock….”. May our prayer open us to God’s will, and so build up his strength within us. In baptism, we have died with Christ, and have been raised to life with him. 7/24

Excerpts from CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING Reflections of the U.S. Catholic Bishops The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents. In these brief reflections, the Bishops wish to highlight seven key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic Social traditions.
RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity is respected and the common good is fostered only if human rights are protected and basic responsibilities are met. Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible, and a right to access to those things required for human decency—food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing, freedom of religion and family life. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

DIGNITY OF WORK & THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living,; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation.

Here we see Abraham pleading with God, praying a beautiful prayer for mercy. Abraham's prayer shows us how close he was to God. It also shows that God always listens to our prayers. God's mercy is so great!

Luke 11:1-13
What a wonderful scene Luke paints for us today! The disciples watch Jesus at prayer. They see how much prayer means to him. One of them gets up the nerve to ask, "Lord, will you teach us to pray?" And Jesus responds by sharing the Lord's Prayer with them. Then Jesus completes his lesson prayer by telling two parables. The first urges us to persist in prayer. The second reminds us that we do not always pray for the right things. God knows best how our prayers should be answered.

Uno de ellos nervioso le pide: "Señor, enséñanos a orar?" Y Jesús responde compartiendo el Padre Nuestro. Jesús completa su lección contando dos parábolas. La primera nos urge a persistir en la oración. La segunda nos recuerda que no siempre rezamos por la cosa correcta. Dios sabe como contestar nuestras oraciones.
