COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF ST. JOHN St. Thomas Aquinas
“1908 The disciples needed a twofold preparation: love in their hearts and obedience in their work. Our Lord assumes they have one of these, for he says, If you love me. And it is clear that you do because you are sad over my leaving: "You also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning" (15:27). The other he commands for the future, keep my commandments. This is like saying: You don't express your love for me by tears but by obedience to my commands, for this is a clear sign of love: "If a man love me, he will keep my word" (14:23). Thus, two things prepare one to receive the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit is love, he is given only to those who love: "I love those who love me" (Prv 8:17). Likewise, he is given to the obedient: "To this we are witnesses" (Acts 3:15); "I have put my Spirit upon him" (Is 42:1). 1909 Yet is it true that it is the obedience of the disciples and their love for Christ that prepare them for the Holy Spirit? It seems not, because the love by which we love God is from the Holy Spirit: "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us" (Rom 5:5). Further, our obedience is from the Holy Spirit: "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God" (Rom 8:14); "I have run in the way of your commandments when you enlarged my heart" [Ps 119:32]. One might answer that it is by loving the Son that we deserve to receive the Holy Spirit, and having him, we love the Father. But this is false because our love for the Father and the Son is the same love. Accordingly, we should say that it is characteristic of the gifts of God that if one makes good use of a gift granted to him, he deserves to receive a greater gift and grace. And one who badly uses a gift, has it taken ************************************ from him. For we read in Matthew (25:24) that the ATTENTION ALL PARISHIONERS talent which the lazy servant received from his master was taken from him because he did not use it well, and it was given to the one who had received five talents. It EXPOSITION OF THE is like this with the gift of the Holy Spirit. No one can BLESSED SACRAMENT love God unless he has the Holy Spirit: because we do not act before we receive God's grace, rather, the Every Thursday in the Church grace comes first: "He loved us first" [1 Jn 4:10]. We say, therefore, that the apostles first received following the 8:30 a.m. mass should the Holy Spirit so that they could love God and obey un l 1:00 p.m. his commands. “1908 Los discípulos necesitaban una doble preparación: el amor en sus corazones y la obediencia en su trabajo. Nuestro Señor asume que tienen uno de estos, porque él dice: Si me amas. Y es claro que lo haces porque estás triste por mi partida: "Tú también eres testigos, porque has estado conmigo desde el principio" (15:27). El otro que manda para el futuro, guarda mis mandamientos. Esto es como decir: "No me expresas tu amor por las lágrimas, sino por la obediencia a mis mandamientos, porque este es un claro signo de amor:" Si alguno me ama, guardará mi palabra "(14:23) . Así, dos cosas preparan uno para recibir el Espíritu Santo. Puesto que el Espíritu Santo es amor, sólo se le da a los que aman: "Yo amo a los que me aman" (Pr 8:17). Del mismo modo, se le da a los obedientes: "A esto somos testigos" (Hechos 3:15); "He puesto mi Espíritu sobre él" (Is 42, ) 1909 ¿Pero es cierto que es la obediencia de los discípulos y su amor por Cristo los que los preparan para el Espíritu Santo? No parece, porque el amor por el cual amamos a Dios proviene del Espíritu Santo: "El amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo que nos ha sido dado" (Rm 5, 5). Además, nuestra obediencia proviene del Espíritu Santo: "Porque todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios, son hijos de Dios" (Rom 8, 14); "He corrido en el camino de tus mandamientos, cuando agrandaste mi corazón" [Salmo 119: 32]. Uno podría responder que es amando al Hijo que merecemos recibir el Espíritu Santo, y al tenerlo, amamos al Padre. Pero esto es falso porque nuestro amor por el Padre y el Hijo es el mismo amor. En consecuencia, debemos decir que es característico de los dones de Dios que si uno hace buen uso de un don que se le otorga, merece recibir un don y una gracia mayores. Y quien mal usa un regalo, se lo quita. Pues leemos en Mateo (25:24) que el talento que el siervo perezoso recibió de su amo fue tomado de él porque no lo usó bien, y fue dado a aquel que había recibido cinco talentos. Es así con el don del Espíritu Santo. Nadie puede amar a Dios a menos que tenga el Espíritu Santo: porque no actuamos antes de recibir la gracia de Dios, sino que la gracia viene primero: "Él nos amó primero" [1 Jn 4:10]. Debemos decir, por lo tanto, que los apóstoles primero recibieron el Espíritu Santo para que pudieran amar a Dios y obedecer sus mandamientos. Pero era necesario que aprovecharan por su amor y obediencia este primer don del Espíritu Santo para recibir más plenamente el Espíritu. Y así el significado es: Si me amas, por medio del Espíritu Santo, a quien tienes, y obedeces mis mandamientos, recibirás el Espíritu Santo con mayor plenitud…” 214-5
