Reading 1 2Samuel 5:1-3 Jesus was often called “Son of David”. David was Israel’s king, both by God’s choice and the people’s. As David’s “son” Jesus can claim the title and throne of his forbearer, and when Jesus takes that throne, it will be forever. This reading celebrates Christ’s kingship by looking back at his ancestry and linking him with David, who was Israel’s greatest king, a man after God’s own heart. David ruled a united kingdom and remained Israel’s model of the ideal king throughout her history. David was but a man who possessed tragic flaws. But in him we see the foreshadowing of a distant descendant who will also combine compassion and dominion and will ascend a cruciform throne that becomes the seat of life.

has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self and the idea of Christ as ruler is rejected. Many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be antiquated and possibly oppressive. They miss the point. Christ’s kingship is one of humility and service.
Jesus knew the oppressive nature of secular kings, and in contrast to them, he connected his role as king to humble service, and commanded his followers to be servants as well. Also his kingdom is tied to his suffering and death. When we celebrate Christ as King, we are not celebrating an oppressive ruler, but one willing to die for humanity and whose “ loving kindness endures forever”. Christ is the King that gives us true freedom, freedom in Him.

THANKSGIVING DAY
NOVEMBER 24th
Thanksgiving services have been celebrated in America as far back as the 16th Century. Usually they were special days set aside to give thanks and praise to the Lord for blessings received, such as an end to a drought, a good harvest or a military victory. These early thanksgiving celebrations were special church services rather than feasts.
The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621 at Plymouth Plantation after their first harvest in the New World. The feast lasted three days and it was attended by 90 Native Americans. The Pilgrims held a “true thanksgiving” celebration in 1623 following a large harvest. This 1623 thanksgiving was significant because the order to recognize the event was from civil authority, and not from the church, making it likely the first civil recognition of Thanksgiving in New England.
By the second half of the 1600s, thanksgiving after the harvest, became more common and started to become annual events. Celebrations took place at different times and in different communities and in some places there were more than one thanksgiving each year. In 1789 President George Washing proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day. It became a federal holiday in 1863 when, after the Civil War, President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”. Thanksgiving in the United States, is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and is one of the major federal and public holidays we have It is the most traveled holiday as people gather with family and friends for the traditional meal. It is said that Americans eat more food on Thanksgiving Day than on any other day in the year. Traditional foods are usually served at Thanksgiving , such as sweet potatoes, corn, squash, stuffing, pumpkin pie etc. with the turkey playing a central role in the celebration.
Other traditions such as the football game, the presidential pardoning of the turkey, the thanksgiving day parade and feeding turkey dinners to the poor, have become standards for this holiday. It is a time, most of all, to give thanks to God for blessings received and to share with others what we have. 214-5
