FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP— POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY
FOR SERIOUS CATHOLIC VOTERS ——A GUIDE TO FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP
In the upcoming elections, Catholics will find they have some difficult choices to make . There is no party that only promotes the Catholic position, one based on moral norms. There is no party for Catholics to call “home”. Unfortunately, politics in our country often can be “a contest of powerful interests, partisan attacks, sound bites, and media hype.” The Church calls for a different kind of political engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of wellformed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable. For many years the Bishops of the U.S. have sought to share Catholic teaching on political life in a series of statements issued every four years on “Political Responsibility” or “Faithful Citizenship.”

They made it clear that their intention was not and is not to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Their purpose is and has been to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth. Also, Faithful Citizenship is an on-going responsibility, not just an election year duty. Their obligation to teach about moral values that should shape our lives, including our public lives, is central to the mission given to the Church by Jesus Christ. “ Participation by Catholics in political life is a moral obligation rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and bear Christian witness in all we do”. As Catholic voters we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attachment to a political party or an interest group. A well formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program or an individual law that contradicts the fundamental contents of faith and morals. (i.e. Abortion, Same SexMarriages. etc. These are non-negotiable issues and always wrong.) “Let your conscience be your guide” but it should be an informed and well-formed conscience. Catholics should use the framework of Catholic Social Teaching to examine candidates’ positions on the issues affecting human life. The key themes of Catholic Social Teaching provide a moral framework that does not easily fit ideologies of “right” or “left” or “liberal” or “conservative” or the platform of any political party. They are not partisan or sectarian but are fundamental ethical principles that are common to all people. These themes will appear in a future bulletin. (Material

How not to vote: 1. Do not vote based just on your political party affiliation, your earlier voting habits, or your family’s voting tradition. You need to look at the stands each candidate takes. This means that you may end up casting votes for candidates from more than one party. 2. Do not cast your vote based on candidates’ appearance, personality, or “media savvy”. Some attractive, engaging, candidates endorse intrinsic evils, while other candidates, who may be plain-looking, uninspiring, and ill at ease in front of cameras, endorse legislation in accord with basic Christian principles. 3. Do not vote for candidates simply because they declare themselves to be Catholic. Unfortunately, many self-described Catholic candidates reject basic Catholic moral teaching. 4. Do not choose among candidates based on “What’s in it for me?” Make your decision based on which candidates are most likely to promote the common good, even if you will not benefit directly or immediately from the legislation they propose. 5. Do not vote for candidates who are right on lesser issues but will vote wrongly on key moral issues. How to vote: 1. For each office, first determine how each candidate stands on each of the issues that will come before him and involve non-negotiable principles. 2. Rank the candidates according to how well their positions align with the non-negotiable moral principles. 3. Give preference to candidates who do not propose positions that contradict these principles. 4. Where every candidate endorses positions contrary to non-negotiable principles, choose the candidate likely to do the least harm. If several are equal, evaluate them based on their views on other, lesser issues. ****************************** As Catholics citizens, we should remember three things: 1. Respect for the dignity of each person is the core of Catholic social and moral teaching. This is our most basic principle. 2. We focus on the common good, not our own personal interests. We ask, how can we make the world a better place? Not, how can I improve my own personal situation? 3. We have a responsibility, a true obligation to form our consciences and participate in the civic life of this nation. 214-3

Three visitors appear unexpectedly before their tent. Abraham identifies them with the Lord. He and his wife, Sarah, rush around making preparations for a lavish meal to refresh their guests. Then their generous hospitality is even more generously rewarded. God, speaking through the guests, promises that the aged couple will have a son!
