Monday, August 15, 2016 is the feast of The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven On this day, the universal Church celebrates what took place at the end of our Blessed Mother’s earthy life. We have no real knowledge of the day, year, and manner of Our Lady’s death. The dates which have been assigned to her death vary between three and fifteen years after Christ’s Ascension. Both Jerusalem and Ephesus claim to be the place where she died. (By tradition Mary lived at Ephesus after the death of Jesus.)

We believe with all the fervor of our faith in your triumphal Assumption, both in body & soul, into heaven, where you are acclaimed as Queen by all the choirs of angels & all the legions of saints; & we unite with them to praise & bless the Lord who has exalted you above all other pure creatures, & to offer you the tribute of our devotion & our love.. We know that your gaze, which on earth watched over the humble & suffering humanity of Jesus, is filled in heaven with the vision of that Humanity glorified, & with the vision of Uncreated Wisdom; & that the joy of your soul in the direct contemplation of the adorable Trinity causes your heart to throb with overwhelming tenderness.

We trust that your merciful eyes may deign to glance down upon our miseries & our sorrows, upon our struggles & our weaknesses; that your countenance may smile upon our joys & our victories; that you may hear the voice of Jesus saying to you of each one of us, as He once said to you of His beloved disciple: “Behold thy Son”. And we who call upon you as our Mother, like John, take you as the guide, strength, and consolation of our mortal life. We are inspired by the certainty that your eyes which wept over the earth, watered by the Blood of Jesus, are yet turned toward this world, held in the clutch of wars, persecutions, & oppression of the just & the weak. And from the shadows of this vale of tears, we seek in your heavenly assistance and tender mercy comfort for our aching hearts & help in the trials of the Church and of our fatherland. We believe, finally, that in the glory where you reign, clothed with the sun and crowned with the stars, you are, after Jesus, the joy and gladness of all the angels and of all the saints. It takes great courage to tell people the truth about themselves when they do not want to hear it. That was what the prophets, like Jeremiah in today's reading, had to do over and over again.

Jeremiah tried to get the people of Judah to reform their lives. He warned them that they would be defeated by the Babylonians and that Jerusalem would be destroyed. But many refused to listen to him, and the king of Judah decided to silence God's messenger. Jeremiah's enemies left him in a water storage tank to die. Later a compassionate foreigner convinced the king to let the prophet go.

Why are prophets willing to suffer for proclaiming God's word? The author of the second reading gives us an excellent answer to that question as he explains why Jesus was willing to die for us: "For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross."

Jesus wants his followers to know the truth. Jesus tells us that, if we are truly living as Christians, sometimes we will experience trouble and division. We cannot experience the peace of Christ until we turn away from sin and let God reign in our lives.
Sometimes when people chose to do God's will, those they love turn against them. This can happen when people do not fully understand or accept the message of Jesus. This conflict with loved ones is what Jesus speaks of today. Remember that Jesus himself suffered rejection.
