Today’s first reading focuses on God’s coming judgment and future divine rule over God’s people and all nations. Isaiah evokes an image of Israel’s splendid new future. This passage envisions God enthroned in the Jerusalem Temple, drawing together all Israelites into one righteous people. All nations will finally recognize the Lord as the one true source of life, gathering on Mt. Zion to learn and practice his teaching. When Israel and all the nations walk in the light of God's instruction, they will truly “cease doing evil” and “learn to do good”.

Romans 13:11-14
In this text, Paul provides the reason for Christians to live according to the law of love: the final fulfillment of God's plan for salvation is near at hand. Paul stresses that Christians must now act in accord with the new life already begun in Christ and soon to be completed with his coming in glory. His closing domination to resist “desires of the flesh” encompasses all that opposes the law of love. Christians must have nothing to do with behaviors then common in the Roman world . Those who continue to live in the “spirit”, the abiding presence of God’s love freely given in Christ, will surely live by the divine command of love.

THE SEASON OF ADVENT
The word “advent” , from the Latin, means “the coming” . When capitalized, “Advent "usually refers to “the coming of Christ into the world” or to “the liturgical period preceding Christmas”; it may also refer to the “Second Coming” of Christ. Advent has probably been observed since the 4th century. Originally, it was a time when converts to Christianity readied themselves for baptism. During this preparation time Christians would spend 40 days in penance, prayer, and fasting to prepare for this celebration. Originally, there was little connection between Advent and Christmas.
The circular shape of the wreath symbolizes eternity; God who has no beginning and no end. The evergreens speak of the hope of newness or renewal of eternal life. The four candles , one for each week of Advent , symbolize the Light of God coming into our world at the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. Usually there are three purple candles signifying repentance & waiting, and one pink or rose colored candle to symbolize joy. Sometimes a fifth candle is added, a white Candle in the center of the wreath representing Christ.
By the 6th century, Roman Christians had tied Advent to the coming of Christ. But the coming they had in mind was not Christ’s first coming in the manger in Bethlehem, but his second coming in the clouds as the judge of the world. Many Christians still view Advent as a season to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus. It was not until the Middle Ages that the Advent season was explicitly linked to Christ’s first coming at Christmas. The church today, looks back upon Christ’s coming in celebration while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Christ’s kingdom when he returns for his people. The season of Advent is a season of hope and longing, of joyful expectation and of peaceful preparation. Many symbols and traditions are associated with Advent, such as Advent calendars, special Advent music, foods, processions and other traditions that may vary from one culture or region to the next. ========================================= Our Advent prayer is “Lord, come!” Lord, come — into our world! Lord, come — into our lives! Lord, come — and purify our longings! Lord, come — to free us from our compulsions and sins! Lord, come — into our relationships! Lord, come — into our work! Lord, come — into our sufferings! And into the darkness of our troubled world. Amen.
The first candle is lit…... The first candle is called the Prophecy Candle. It reminds us of the prophets, those special persons who spoke God's Word to the people during the hundreds of years before Jesus was born. The prophets told people what God was going to do, and they instructed the people on how to get ready. Over and over, the prophets warned the people to repent their sins and to begin obeying God. The first candle is also called the Candle of Hope. We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. As the prophet Isaiah says: “The root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
