Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 2Kings 5:14-17 Naaman, an army commander and foreign dignitary, had come to Israel hoping to be cured of his leprosy. He was disappointed when Elisha advised him simply to bathe in the Jorden as he expected some grand spectacle of healing. Angry and disappointed he was going to leave when his servants persuaded him that he had nothing to lose if he followed Elisha’s instructions. The text today recounts the miracle that follows. Naaman is made clean & in the grip of gratitude, embraces the God of Israel as earth’s only god & promises to worship no other. There was the belief that gods could only be worshipped in their own land so Naaman asks for some soil to take with him on which he will erect an altar to worship the Lord. Naaman offers Elisha gifts for his service which Elisha refuses, reflecting his awareness that he did only what God required so any reward will come from the Lord. Both men are bold exemplars of faith lived and spoken with conviction.

Estaba decepcionado cuando Eliseo le aconsejó simplemente bañarse en el Jorden como él esperaba algún gran espectáculo de curación. Enfadado y decepcionado iba a salir cuando sus siervos lo convenció de que él no tenía nada que perder si siguió las instrucciones de Eliseo. El texto de hoy narra el milagro que sigue. Naamán es limpio & en las garras de la gratitud abraza al Dios de Israel como la tierra sólo Dios & promesas no adorar a otros. Existía la creencia de que los dioses sólo podían ser adorado en su propia tierra. Naamán pide algo de tierra para tomar con él sobre lo que él va a erigir un altar para adorar al Señor. Reading 2 2Timothy 2:8-13 In this text Paul is speaking from the heart about his own experience of faith. He preached the Gospel and now is suffering for it, writing from a prison cell. Paul suffers willingly because he trusts that his suffering will be for the benefit of those who have come to know Christ. Paul makes a single point with two similar statements: those who “have died” will “live”, those who “persevere” will “reign”. Then he makes a disconcerting pronouncement: “if we deny him he will deny us” and “if we are unfaithful, he remains faithful”. This text contrasts our infidelity to Christ with Christ’s fidelity to himself and God, and not to us. It is saying that Christ must be true to himself and that means he must judge our unfaithfulness. It is in his nature to do so. Even God cannot pretend sin never happened; either we repent or Christ must judge us.

Luke 17:11-19
This Gospel tells the familiar story of Jesus healing the ten lepers while on his way to Jerusalem. It is for us a lesson about faith & knowing our salvation is found in recognizing the gifts we have been given and knowing to whom we must offer our thanks. Often Jesus touches those he heals but this time he foregoes that ritual and simply orders them to show themselves to the priests. The ten follow Jesus’ command and “as they were going” suddenly discover they were healed. Only one, a Samaritan, returned to Jesus, glorifying God and thanking him. All 10 lepers were given the gift of healing but Jesus commends the Samaritan for his faith and gives him salvation. The other 9 settled for too little for had they returned, they too would have received the far greater gift Jesus gave the Samaritan; the promise of salvation.

Tuesday Ocrober 11, 2016 Feast of Saint Pope John XXII Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born of a poor farming family in northern Italy on November 25, 1881. At the age of twelve he entered the seminary in Bergamo and received a scholarship which enabled him to go to Rome to continue his studies. His career with-in the Church began in 1904 when he graduated university with a doctorate in theology and was ordained a priest thereafter. Roncalli held a number of positions which included: Secretary to the Bishop of Bergamo, National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, Papal diplomat, serving in Bulgaria, Turkey, and in France. Roncalli was named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953. In 1958 he was called to Rome to participate in the process of electing a new pope.
When the Cardinals, on October 20, 1958, elected Angelo Roncalli as pope, many regarded him, because of his age and ambiguous reputation, as a transitional pope, little realizing that the pontificate of this man of 76 years would mark a turning point in history and initiate a new age for the Church. Less than 3 months after his election he
announced that he would hold a diocesan synod for Rome, convoke an ecumenical council for the universal Church, and revise the Code of Canon Law. The synod, the first in the history of Rome, was held in 1960, Vatican Council II was convoked in 1962, and the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Code was appointed in 1963. Pope John is best remembered for the Vatican Council which changed the Church forever.
