Reading 1 Sirach 35:12-14,16-18 This reading looks at the inner disposition that best attunes us and allows our prayers to rise to God. Sirach teaches that our God, who is so merciful and just, is seeking those very qualities within his people. It is not favoritism toward the “weak” that causes God to be attentive to their prayers, but his passion for justice and concern for his children’s deepest needs and attitudes. This text is intended to encourage those with adequate resources as well as those in difficult financial circumstances. We all share in the impartial love of our merciful God and in his expectations for humility and just behavior.
Reading 2 2Timothy 4:6-8,16-18 Paul is writing from prison, anticipating death, and addressing Timothy whom he has mentored and who will persevere in proclaiming the Gospel after his death. Paul is unwavering in his trust and confidence in God. He boasts of the “strength” he received from the Lord who always stood by him . He speaks also of his reliance on the Lord despite the failure of his companions to remain loyal. His prayer for those who deserted him is sincere. He can be generous and forgiving because the Lord did not abandon him. He awaits a “crown of righteousness” from the hands of his ‘just” Lord. That reward is not only for him but also will be given to “all” whose hearts long for Christ. Paul sings God’s praises for he is confident the Lord will rescue him, not from physical dangers but for eternal life.
Gospel Luke 18:4-9 In this parable, in contrasting the prayer of the Pharisee with the prayer of the tax collector, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in humility before God. The Pharisee is not grateful for what God has given him, but for the ways he outshines his neighbors and especially the despised tax collector. He does not realize that his condition results from God’s grace and mercy; instead, he believes it is his own accomplishments. The tax collector does not even raise his head for it is weighed down by the burden of his sins. He simply begs for mercy. He offers no excuses and never entertains the thought that at least he’s better than some others. All that he leaves to God, offering only his sincere contrition. Jesus, surprises his listeners by offering the humility of the tax collector as a model for the prayer of a disciple. The parable reminds us that when we pray, we must remember our need for God in our lives. If we are too full of ourselves, there is too little room for God’s grace to work in us.

Sirácida nos enseña que nuestro Dios que es tan misericordioso y justo, está buscando esas mismas cualidades dentro de su pueblo. Lectura 2 2Timoteo 4:6-8,16-18 Pablo está escribiendo desde la cárcel, anticipando la muerte, y abordar Timoteo quien coordinó y quién va a perseverar en el anuncio del Evangelio, después de su muerte. Pablo es inquebrantable en su fe y confianza en Dios. Se jacta de la "fortaleza" que él recibió del Señor, que siempre se mantuvo por él . TUESDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2016 It will soon be Election Day - time to go to the polls and elect the President of our country. Of equal importance is - who we send to the Congress. The following is information about where the 2 Pennsylvania Senate Candidates stand on some key issues. It was put out by Network—Advocates for Justice, a lobby group inspired by Catholic Sisters. The information is factual, objective and non-judgmental.
LIVING WAGES The minimum wage in Pennsylvania is $7.25 and has not been increased since the federal mandate in 2009. Katie NcGinty - supports raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. She believes that “anyone working full-time in our country should be able to provide for themselves and their family”, “and a living wage for workers is the difference between living in poverty and the opportunity to provide for themselves.” Pat Toomey—does not support raising the minimum wage because he believes it would result in job cuts. In a statement after the Senate’s vote in 2014 on raising the minimum wage, he said, “The last thing the American people need is a bill coming out of Washington that would wipe out hundreds of thousands of their jobs.”.
HEALTH CARE Since Pennsylvania enacted the Medicaid expansion provision of the Affordable Care Act, 379,000 more low-income residents have health insurance. Katie MvGinty—helped expand Medicaid coverage to half a million Pennsylvanians while working as Chief of Staff for the Governor of Pennsylvania. As a Senator, she promises to lower costs and continue to help make health care accessible and affordable. Pat Toomey—believes the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is “fundamentally wrong in its approach to improving our nation’s healthcare system.” He is an original cosponsor of the ObamaCare Repeal Act. He voted twice to repeal the ACA in 2011.
CITIZENSHIP Undocumented immigrants in Pennsylvania already pay $139 million in state and local taxes and, if comprehensive immigration reform is passed, they will pay $52 million more. Katie McGinty—says, “no one thinks sanctuary cities are the solution, but it’s the result of the immigration crisis.” As a Senator, she “would work with Phildelphia and DHS to determine the best way to keep our communities safe.” Pat Toomey—voted against the 2013 comprehensive immigration reform bill. He voted in favor of a bill to prevent funding to implement President Obama's executive actions on immigration. This summer, he is promoting a bill to eliminate Sanctuary Cities TAX JUSTICE. About 554,000 workers in Pennsylvania would benefit from expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit to include childless workers. Katie McGinty—proposes a tax policy that eliminates unfair corporate tax policy which “incentivize sending jobs overseas and put small businesses at a disadvantage.” She says, “ It is time to level the playing field and close tax loopholes that allow U.S. companies to avoid paying their share of taxes. Closing these loopholes would increase support for advanced manufacturing and small businesses.” Pat Toomey—supports simplifying the tax code and lowering tax rates “to encourage economic growth and make American companies more competitive.” He voted against a bill that made the 2009 expansions to the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit permanent. 214-4
