In 2025, more than 275,000 children came through our hospital, specialty clinics, and community programs, and each one represents a story of hope and resilience, and the trust families have in us. These children are proof that exceptional pediatric care changes lives, and they remind us why our work matters now more than ever.
As demand for pediatric expertise continues to grow, we are expanding care beyond our hospital walls to ensure lack of access is never a barrier. This year, we broke ground on a new Children’s Specialty Care Center in Wentzville, Missouri, expanding advanced pediatric subspecialty services for families in St. Charles County and surrounding communities. Through a partnership with CoxHealth, we also broke ground on a Children’s Specialty Care Center in Springfield—extending world-class pediatric care across Southwest Missouri. These projects are more than new facilities—they are proof that nearby care, earlier intervention, and peace of mind can reach thousands of families.
We also took decisive action to address the youth mental health crisis. St. Louis Children’s and KVC Health Systems have formed a joint venture to provide world-class pediatric mental health treatment for youth ages 6 to 18. Opening in late 2026 on KVC Missouri’s Children’s Mental Wellness Campus, this innovative partnership will provide families with comprehensive, compassionate care close to home—proof that no child should face mental health challenges alone.

Because of you, the future of pediatric medicine is brighter. Through the Children’s Discovery Institute (CDI)—a collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital, its Foundation, and WashU Medicine—donor support fuels bold research and breakthrough discoveries that help children not only survive, but thrive.
Grants from the CDI support early-stage, high-impact discoveries that traditional funding sources often overlook. In 2025, St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation awarded more than $14 million in grants to WashU Medicine physician-scientists working to advance breakthroughs in genomics, precision medicine, and translational research. By investing in pioneering ideas and accelerating discoveries from the laboratory to the bedside, CDI is bringing new hope, treatments, and cures to children and families when they need them most.

Transforming How We Think About Early Brain Development
Countless factors, from premature birth to environmental exposure, can change how an infant’s or child’s brain grows. These risks can lead to devastating disorders later in life if not identified in time. Together, St. Louis Children’s and WashU Medicine are changing the field of pediatric neuroimaging to better diagnose and treat patients before critical windows of brain development are closed.
Through generous donor support, St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation established the Center for Brain Development and Neurological Disorders within the Children’s Discovery Institute (CDI) in 2025. This Center aims to merge state-of-the-art imaging techniques with detailed clinical data to provide life-changing therapies earlier and more accurately.
Under the leadership of WashU Medicine pediatric neurologist Christopher D. Smyser, MD, the Center will be a hub for advancing pediatric neurological research. Neuroimaging data yields valuable information on the impact that prenatal conditions, preterm birth, brain injury, and other factors have on a child’s brain. A single MRI scan can reveal a great deal of information, and with a robust research program to collect and analyze imaging data across nationwide studies, the potential for breakthroughs is limitless.
Philanthropic investment in the Center is laying the groundwork for a new approach to diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions. Donors help bring the brightest minds in pediatric neuroimaging to St. Louis Children’s and help build a future where kids’ brains can develop safely.

Expanding Access to Care
Every child deserves access to the care they need to grow, heal, and thrive—no matter the challenges they face. At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, we are working to make that promise a reality by expanding access to critical services and meeting families where they are. Through new partnerships, specialized programs, and thoughtfully designed spaces for healing, more children and teens can receive the support they need. Your generosity helps remove barriers to care and ensures that more children across our region can receive the expert, compassionate support they deserve.
Transforming Pediatric Mental Health in the St. Louis Region and Beyond
The need for youth mental health services in our region is severe. Kids and teens are experiencing higher levels of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, the impacts of trauma, and other mental health challenges. A shortage of pediatric mental health beds in the St. Louis area leaves many families without options.
In response to this growing crisis, St. Louis Children’s and KVC Health Systems have partnered to create a continuum of youth mental health care at the KVC Missouri Children’s Mental Wellness Campus in Webster Groves. This new, state-of-the-art children’s mental health hospital and fully renovated outpatient treatment facility will offer comprehensive support to youth and their families. The mental health hospital and outdoor spaces are designed to prioritize kids’ healing, safety, and comfort.
Children and teens will be cared for by specially trained pediatric mental health experts. Inpatient and residential care is operated by KVC’s inpatient treatment team, Camber Mental Health. Outpatient services are operated by KVC Missouri. Inpatient and outpatient care teams collaborate with WashU Medicine physicians from St. Louis Children’s.
Philanthropic support has been crucial in bringing this ambitious and worthwhile project to life. In addition to the generosity of donors, St. Louis Children’s, KVC, BJC HealthCare, and the state of Missouri have committed substantially to the project. The facility is expected to open in late 2026.

Your Impact beyond the Bedside
When a child is in the hospital, the experience affects the entire family. Thanks to donor generosity, we’re able to surround patients and their loved ones with compassionate services that ease daily burdens, provide comfort, and help families stay close to their child’s side. From emotional support to practical resources, these thoughtful touches ensure families feel cared for, strengthened, and never alone during their child’s journey.
Feeding Families and Fueling Hope
When a child is hospitalized, parents and caregivers are suddenly spending long hours at the child’s bedside, many times unwilling or unable to leave for a meal. At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, care for the entire family is a priority. The Caregiver Meal Program was created to ease the financial and emotional burden of securing meals, allowing parents and caregivers to focus on their child’s health. St. Louis Children’s Hospital believes when families feel supported, children heal better.

The program provides breakfast and dinner each day in the hospital cafeteria for any two caregivers of a hospitalized patient and three meals a day for breastfeeding mothers. Every caregiver who has a child in the hospital is a person experiencing hardship and is a person in need. Caregivers sign in with their patient’s room number and receive a meal that includes an entrée, side, and drink. In the past, the program required tracking and vouchers, but the signin system reduces the stigma. The program's inclusivity reaches every family, not just those determined to have financial need.
Meals are served twice daily, including holidays, and for those with children admitted in the overnight hours, there are sandwiches available
in the Emergency Department. Access to healthy snacks is also always available at the Center for Families and throughout the hospital at snack carts and nutrition spaces. The hospital also connects families with resources if there is food insecurity at home and, upon discharge, “to go” meal packages that feed a family of four for three days are offered.
The Caregiver Meal Program provided more than 100,000 meals in 2025, offering nourishment and comfort to families and caregivers during difficult moments. Made possible through generous donor support, the program is proof that philanthropy extends compassionate care beyond the patient to the people who love and support them most.

A Lifeline That Lasted a Lifetime
Decades after their premature daughter’s fight for survival at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Mary Ann and Bill Anderson are giving back to the care team—and innovations—that made her future possible.

Mary Ann and Bill Anderson are no strangers to St. Louis Children's Hospital. Their daughter was a patient in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) more than 30 years ago. But recently, they returned to the hospital to tour the NICU—and visit with the WashU Medicine physician—at the beloved institution that saved their daughter's life.
After moving to St. Louis from Houston, their daughter was born seven weeks early with Hyaline membrane disease (HMD) and pneumonia at Jewish Hospital. Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital later merged in 1996 to create Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She was having great trouble breathing and was taken by ambulance to St. Louis Children's, which was the only way to transport her there at the time. The staff wasn't sure she would live through the night. HMD, today known as infant respiratory distress syndrome, is a condition that causes babies to need extra oxygen and help breathing. Unfortunately, it also worsens over the first 48 to 72 hours and then improves with treatment. While Mary Ann was recovering from giving birth at Jewish Hospital, her daughter was fighting for her life at St. Louis Children's with the help of then WashU Medicine Division of Newborn Medicine Director F. Sessions Cole, MD. After three weeks in the NICU, she recovered from pneumonia, and her lungs developed enough to allow her to breathe on her own.
The Andersons credit Dr. Cole and his residents with giving their now adult daughter a chance to be a healthy child. For 34 years they've stayed in touch with him. They also will never forget the care of one of the NICU nurses, Margaret. "She was very important to us during our daily visits," say Bill and Mary Ann. She eased their anxiety as she encouraged them to look at their daughter's progress instead of the various monitors in her hospital room. Margaret worked in the NICU at St. Louis Children's Hospital for more than 30 years, and the Andersons continue to keep in touch with her as well.
Last year, the couple returned to St. Louis Children's Hospital for the first time to take a tour of the NICU, including the NICU area where their daughter stayed. They were excited to see the changes that had been made over the years.
"It was just phenomenal to see the rooms are made to assist families," Bill says. "Families can sit down and talk to each other and have quiet time. When we were there, the unit was nothing like it is now. The amenities are phenomenal." The Andersons learned about the new donor-funded AngelEye CameraSystem that allows families the ability to see their new baby at any time. In fact, they were so impressed with the technological advances for parents of NICU babies, they made a philanthropic gift to support the program.
They also saw the bridge that was built that now enables babies needing NICU services to be quickly walked from Barnes-Jewish Hospital to St. Louis Children's, eliminating the need for ground transportation like their daughter required in the early 1990s. The Andersons were incredibly thankful for their time with Dr. Cole and to see how families continue to benefit from world-class care at St. Louis Children's.
Their connection with Dr. Cole also inspired the Andersons to make a legacy gift to St. Louis Children's Hospital. Their gift is considered unrestricted, and the Andersons know their funds will go to wherever they're needed most at the time. And while the gift is their way of honoring Dr. Cole and his work, the Andersons are also honoring St. Louis Children's Hospital. Making a gift through a will is a popular way for individuals like the Andersons to make a tremendous impact on the causes they care about most. For Bill and Mary Ann, they wanted to recognize the institution that saved their daughter's life. Their children have also agreed upon the importance of this legacy gift.
"We give where we can, and when we can, and it's very important," Bill emphasizes. "We can give more in a planned gift than we can outright."

Emerson has made a transformative $5 million gift to St. Louis Children’s Hospital—its largest to date—supporting groundbreaking pediatric research and expanded access to care. Funding will advance work at the Children’s Discovery Institute, a collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital, its Foundation, and WashU Medicine—and will advance research on the developing brain, leading to earlier interventions and preventative therapies for neurological disorders that can improve young patients’ quality of life. This gift also funds the Healthy Kids Express Diabetes mobile unit, the first and only mobile pediatric diabetes clinic in the country, bringing critical services directly to local children. Since 1985, Emerson has contributed $11 million to St. Louis Children’s, reinforcing its enduring commitment to improving the health and well-being of kids and families across the St. Louis region.

Richard G. “Dick” Engelsmann is a St. Louis business leader whose vision and generosity have made a lasting impact on pediatric care. In 1969, he co-founded Beltservice Corporation from his apartment, growing it into a global leader in custom conveyor belts with operations across multiple states and countries.
A dedicated, longtime supporter of St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Dick’s philanthropy reflects his deep commitment to advancing medicine. He established the hospital’s inaugural Distinguished Professorship of Pediatrics, supporting physician-scientists whose research and innovation drive breakthroughs and elevate patient care—ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients and families.
Now chairman emeritus of the family business, Dick continues to invest in the future of children’s health—helping ensure the best possible care for patients and families for generations to come.

In 2017, Annemarie and Mark Milton experienced the devastating loss of their baby, Greta. Driven by their experience, they founded Greta Gives Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to bereaved families. Now, in partnership with St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Greta Gives Hope has funded a new Grief Support Group that will launch in summer 2026.
Meeting monthly at the BJC Commons, the Grief Support Group will offer free group therapy for both parents and siblings. Led by experts in Spiritual Care, Social Work, and Child Life Services, parents can connect with others who genuinely understand their experiences, and siblings can participate in a dedicated, age-appropriate program. This initiative creates a vital sanctuary where families can find community and healing without the need for explanation—turning shared heartbreak into a path forward.

Beth and Tim Gunter give to St. Louis Children’s because they have seen firsthand what is possible for families in the most difficult moments. When their son, Henry, was born with complex challenges, their world shifted in an instant. Beth shares that the care Henry received was extraordinary—the hospital team became their strength, and that support gave them hope when they needed it most. From lifesaving treatment to small, thoughtful moments of compassion, every detail mattered. Because of that care, Henry is now a thriving toddler.
As chair of the Development Board, Beth’s leadership and the time she gives are deeply important, helping ensure that more families can experience the same level of care and hope. Supporting St. Louis Children’s means giving other families the same opportunities Beth and Tim were given.
