St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation Annual Application Leader Approval Changes

Beginning January 1, 2026, St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation (SLCH Foundation) will make the following change to the leader approval/endorsement step of the online application:

• Leader approval now includes completion of rubric questions within the application portal

Please direct all questions to Amy Trapp at Amy.Trapp@bjc.org.

Current Leader Approval Step:

All applications submitted through the online portal utilizing the annual SLCH Foundation grant application currently require review and approval by the WashU Medicine Chief or SLCH VP prior to the request moving forward in the review process. A list of approved leaders is included in the application.

Once the application is submitted by the requester, the leader will receive an email notification with a link to access the application and confirm yes or no, determining if the application is approved to move forward.

Addition in 2026:

The rubric has been created based on the hospital’s priorities of people, clinical excellence, stewardship, and growth. Each priority has two to three questions, with each question equaling one point. For each yes answer, the leader will add one point to the corresponding cell. Maximum points per priority are in “()” within each cell.

As the leader populates the score per priority, the total points will automatically calculate. The maximum total points that can be received for a request are 11 points across the four areas.

The total score will be provided to senior leadership as part of their standard review process.

See the Leader Endorsement page within the application portal below to review the instructions and questions as they appear within the application portal.

NEW to 2026 - Leader approval now requires the completion of this scoring rubric, which has been created based on the hospital’s priorities of people, clinical excellence, stewardship, and growth. Each priority in the table below has 2 to 3 questions, with each question equaling 1 point. For questions with a “yes” answer, add 1 point to the corresponding cell. Maximum points per priority are in “()” within each cell. The maximum total points that can be received for this request are 11 points across the four areas. The score will be shared with senior leaders as part of their standard review process.

Hospital Priority

People (3 points) - Establish a stable, thriving and inclusive culture that supports an engaged and diverse workforce

1. Does this support recruitment/retention of top performers?

2. Does this address a priority need (as determined by leader)?

3. Does this provide education/engagement opportunities for staff?

Clinical Excellence (3 points) - Achieve and sustain top level clinical performance nationally.

1. Does this differentiate SLCH from other regional/national pediatric healthcare providers?

2. Does this allow the hospital to meet established clinical priorities?

3. Does this support an evidence-based approach to providing clinical excellence?

Stewardship (3 points) - Continue to reinvest in our community, clinical, programs and people by delivering strong financial performance.

1. Does this meet an unmet need in our community as identified in the application?

2. Does this provide preventative/follow-up care and/or education in the community?

3. Does this support patient and family centered care?

Growth (2 points) - Further demonstrates our relevance and indispensability in the markets we serve.

1. Does this support a new innovation and/or opportunity that differentiates SLCH from other regional pediatric hospitals?

2. Does this support regional/national growth?

St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation WashU Medicine Award Process Changes

Beginning January 1, 2026, St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation (SLCHF) will make the following changes to how awards may be processed. Please direct all questions to Desiree’ White at Desiree.White1@bjc.org

Direct awards will be made without the receipt of an online application to SLCHF. This will follow the same process as the annual endowed chair/professorship awards. Note that direct awards are subject to F&A, unless the award letter states, “Endowed Chair/professorship”.

Criteria used to determine whether a direct award will apply

- SLCHF maintains a fund(s) which is donor restricted/designated to a WashU project/program and/or PI. These funds may be endowed or spendable.

For example: donor restricted gifts made in support of Fertility Preservation within the division of Pediatric Hem/Onc will be awarded annually, each fall, in support of this program to the PI on file.

How SLCHF will communicate this decision

- Each August, SLCHF provides a fund balance report to WashU division chiefs and division administrators (DA), via email. Fund balances include the new spendable balance available for all endowed (and spendable) funds restricted to their division, as of July 1. Within the email, SLCHF will include a list of anticipated direct awards – indicating if the award will be a continuation to an existing project number (see below) or a new direct award, the PI assigned to the award, and the amount to be awarded.

- In the event a spendable gift is received at another time during the year and must be spent within the current allocation period, SLCHF will alert the PI and DA of the occurrence and SLCHF will issue a supplemental award.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation WashU Medicine Award Process Changes

Recurring, annual awards will now be awarded as a continuation (supplement) to the existing WashU SPA project number.

Criteria used to determine whether a continuation will apply

- SLCHF has confirmed an annual direct award (see above) which will be awarded each fall.

- SLCHF receives an online application for a project/program, a recurrence/renewal to an existing award.

o The title of the project matches (with an update to year/project period)

o The description indicates that the project/program is ongoing and has received prior SLCHF funding

o The project period for the previous award has not expired

How SLCHF will communicate this decision

- SLCHF will confirm at the top of the award letter (NOA), which is attached to the approval email (see the image below). If “Grant is a continuation of a current project” is marked “yes”, then the line will include the current WashU SPA award/project number.

Louis Children’s

Hospital Foundation WashU Medicine Award Process Changes

***Sponsored Projects Accounting Notes related to the changes above.

• A Continuation or a Supplement with date extension should be processed in RMS on a PD Child record by the department.

• A Supplement with dates in the current period should be a modification on the current increment in RMS.

• A New/Initial Award requires a NEW Parent Record in RMS.

• Please work with your OSRS GA to process the records in RMS.

• If you have any questions, please contact SPAprivategrants@wustl.edu

CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY INSTITUTE (CDI) FUNDING REQUEST

The Children’s Discovery Institute, a collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital, its Foundation and WashU Medicine, is the result of a shared vision to change the way pediatric research is conducted and an intense commitment to bring about dramatic results in pediatric care to offer innovative, therapeutic treatments for patients who were previously considered untreatable.

With philanthropic gifts to the CDI, St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation drives pediatric discoveries to uncover what may now seem unfindable lifesaving treatments and cures for childhood medical conditions. Since CDI’s inception in 2006, our research award commitments for CDI investigator-led projects have generated more than 1,850 scientific papers and more than $736 million in external grant funding, including prestigious awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding.

The CDI is an invaluable resource that allows us to turn promising research concepts into real-world strategies that can save lives and improve patient care.
