CHORAL
ST JOHN’S COLLEGE CHAPEL
FAITH · BEAUTY · JUSTICE
INTRODUCTION
This booklet contains information about our choral services this term. We are a Church of England foundation, and you are most welcome to join us, whatever your beliefs. Our beautiful Gilbert Scott Chapel, built in the 1860s, is a distinctive feature of th e Cambridge skyline and home to the College ’s celebrated choral tradition that dates from the 1670s.
Evensong is at 6.30pm unless otherwise shown. It follows the order of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and usually lasts 40 minutes, except on Sundays when it lasts just under an hour and includes a sermon. The Sunday morning Eucharist is in contemporary lan guage and lasts around 75 minutes.
SUNDAY EVENSONG SERMON SERIES
At Sunday Evensongs during term time there is a themed series of sermons by guest speakers representing a range of disciplines and perspectives. Distinguished preachers are drawn from different parts of the national Church, and from the forefront of religi ous, theological, and philosophical research. These sermons, as well as those at the weekly Sunday morning Eucharist, and at other special services, are recorded and shared via the Chapel Services & Events page of the College website .
CHARITIES
After every service you will be able to give to one of our designated charities, either in cash or by using the contactless payment units in the Ante -Chapel.
ATTENDING SERVICES
There is no need to reserve a place in advance. You may enter College through either the Great Gate or the Forecourt. Access to the main Chapel is fifteen minutes before the start of each service .
Members of College may wear surplices on Sundays and on other holy days, as marked below by the letter S against the date. A supply of these is kept in the Ante -Chapel.
Further information, including webcasts of some services, may be found at www.joh.cam.ac.uk and www.sjcchoir.co.uk .
SUNDAY EVENSONG SERMON SERIES
MUSIC SPEAKS
This term we dedicate our new Chapel organ which fully finds its voice as part of our daily round of worship and prayer. With musicians, ministers , and theologians, we reflect on the ways in which music speaks to us and echoes something of the sound of the likeness of God ’s music.
