TEACHER TRAINING FOR NEW TEACHERS

Teaching English as a second language is an exciting and rewarding career choice. If you are looking for an initial teacher training course, St Giles recommends the Cambridge CELTA.

The Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is the most internationally recognised qualification and can help you find a rewarding teaching job with a reputable school. The CELTA is a level 5 qualification.

No teaching experience needed.

Proficient English language user (C1 or above on the Common European Framework).

Educated to the standard required for entry into higher education (e.g. A levels).

SAMPLE INPUT TIMETABLE

During the full-time CELTA course, input sessions take place in the morning between 9:00 and 13:00 and afternoons are devoted to teaching practice. Lesson observation is an integral part of the course. Trainees observe experienced teachers as part of the morning input sessions while peer observation takes place in the afternoon. Feedback is given after teaching practice.

COURSES FOR EXPERIENCED TEACHERS OF ENGLISH (TEC)

St Giles offers professional development courses for experienced English language teachers who want to advance their teaching careers while gaining valuable, practical skills.

ST GILES TEACHERS OF ENGLISH COURSE (TEC)

The Teachers of English Course (TEC) is a 2-week course for experienced English language teachers. You’ll enjoy engaging hands-on training sessions from expert trainers.

Explore the background to language learning and teaching, motivation and engagement

Expand and update on student-centred communicative teaching methodology

Develop classroom management and practical teaching techniques for a modern classroom

Develop your toolkit of effective activities and teaching resources

Share experiences and ideas with likeminded teachers from around the world

For international teachers, the course also provides a fully immersive opportunity to refresh English language skills. Courses can be tailored to participants’ needs, with closed-group TEC courses available year-round.

Available at St Giles Brighton (January and July) and London Central (August).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TEC

B2+ level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

At least 6 months’ experience as an English language teacher.

TRINITY CERTIFICATE FOR PRACTISING TEACHERS EXTENSION

Take your teaching career further with the Trinity CertPT, an internationally recognised qualification designed for experienced English language teachers. Integrated with our Teachers of English (TEC) course in Brighton, it offers expert guidance, flexible support, and a clear pathway to certification.

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The Trinity CertPT is an internationally recognised qualification for experienced English language teachers. You can take the Trinity CertPT as an extension to our Teachers of English (TEC) course in Brighton.

During the TEC course, you’ll receive all the input and support you need for the Trinity CertPT tasks. After the TEC course, you’ll have 12 weeks to complete these 4 assessed tasks. You’ll enjoy remote support and at least one online tutorial with your personal tutor in Brighton.

At the end of this period, your marked tasks will be submitted to Trinity for moderation.

TRINITY CERTPT TASKS:

The 4 assessed tasks help you relate theory to your specific teaching context and learners. The tasks are focussed on:

Evaluating a teaching resource for your specific group of learners, Adapting a teaching resource for your learners, Creating a new original resource for your learners, Reflecting on the use of this resource with your learners.

The Trinity CertPT is a great way to link your classroom practice and learners, with the resources you use and the underlying pedagogical principles that support them. It’s also a stepping stone towards more in depth classroom investigation and materials development, bridging initial teacher training qualifications (e.g. CELTA, national teaching qualifications) with higher level qualifications (e.g. Delta, Masters).

CERTIFICATION:

At the end of the course, you receive a St Giles Teachers of English Course Certificate of Completion, and an internationally recognised level 6 qualification for experienced teachers: the Trinity Certificate for Practising Teachers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

B2+ level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

A teaching qualification + 6 months teaching experience, OR no qualification but substantial teaching experience (contact us to confirm eligibility).

The Trinity CertPT extension is also available for closed groups taking our Teachers of English Course.

Our group teacher training courses are tailored to each cohort and developed in partnership with institutions, combining theory and practice to support immediate classroom impact and long-term professional growth. Typical areas of focus often include:

Language development, supporting teachers’ own language awareness and confidence

Student-centred, practical teaching techniques that can be used across a range of learning contexts

Communicative approaches to language teaching, with a focus on meaningful interaction

Assessing learning, including formative assessment and effective feedback strategies

Adaptive teaching, responding to learners’ needs, levels, and learning styles

Microteaching and guided feedback, allowing participants to practise new ideas in a supportive environment

Observation of experienced teachers, with structured reflection and discussion

Strategies for cascading learning, enabling participants to share knowledge and skills with colleagues beyond the course

Specialist courses focused on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) are also available and we offer our Teachers of English Course (TEC), Trinity CertPT, CELTA and Cambridge TKT qualifications for groups.

For very experienced teachers, senior staff, or teacher educators, we offer advanced programmes that explore pedagogy in greater depth and support leadership within teacher development.

Online Teacher Training

Training is also available online, offering flexibility to spread sessions over several weeks and use both synchronous and asynchronous learning on online platforms to fit around teachers’ schedules and maximise learning.

CAMBRIDGE TKT FOR GROUPS

The Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) preparation course is ideal for teachers who are already teaching, but would like to get a Cambridge qualification which provides formal recognition of their knowledge. We integrate our hands-on training approach with exam preparation so that teachers get the best of both worlds. At St Giles Brighton, we offer the TKT preparation course and exam (taken on site at the school) for closed groups of teachers.

THE TKT CORE MODULES COVER:

Module 1: background to language learning and teaching

Module 2: lesson planning and resources for language teaching

Module 3: managing the teaching and learning process.

TEST FORMAT:

The test for each module has 80 questions and is 80 minutes long.

The content of the TKT is tested using objective tasks, such as matching, multiple choice, sequencing, categorizing errors and finding the odd one out.

It is not possible to fail this exam. The exam is assessed by Cambridge using bands 4, 3, 2, 1. Band 4 is the highest.

At the end of the course, participants will receive a St Giles TKT preparation course certificate of attendance and a Cambridge TKT certificate for each module completed.

Course participants should have at least a B1 level of English but preferably B2 (e.g. IELTS 5.5+) in order to fully understand the exam questions and achieve the best results. They are expected to understand a range of teaching terms.

MEET YOUR TRAINERS

St Giles has an in-house team of experienced teacher trainers and this ensures consistency of approach. All the trainers are also practising teachers and some are also assessors for Cambridge EnglIsh or Trinity College London. The trainers work on St Giles’ courses in the UK and overseas.

began her ELT career in the 90s, working in Turkey, France, and Ireland before joining St Giles. Since then, she has worked as a CELTA tutor, contributed to DELTA and ICELT courses, and delivered training for overseas teachers, including projects in Senegal, Ghana, and Angola. She continues to teach EFL, EAP, and ESP at all levels, coordinates St Giles’ in-house teacher development programme, and mentors recently qualified teachers. One of her other passions is contemporary dance!

JO PERROTTA

began her ELT career in the 90s, teaching a variety of ages and levels in Oxford and Italy. She completed her Masters in ELT and joined St Giles. Since then, she has taken on various roles within the school, including as St Giles Brighton Director of Studies, and was also a Trinity examiner for GESE (Graded English Spoken Examination) and ISE (integrated skills exam).

Her love of teaching led her back to the classroom and into teacher training as a CELTA tutor.

BRIGHTON TEACHER TRAINERS

(Head of Teacher Training) is an accredited CELTA, Delta and Trinity CertPT tutor. She taught in the UK, Spain and China, working with young learners, teens and adults, before returning to the UK to take her DELTA with University College London (UCL).

Since settling at St Giles Brighton, she has become a specialist in inclusion and Specific Learning Difficulties and a qualified dyslexia tutor and access arrangements assessor, holding ATS status in the UK.

She also works as an MA tutor, and has experience in project management and materials development for international projects (including training projects in Angola, Cuba and Uzbekistan). She regularly speaks at conferences such as IATEFL and the Future of Training Conference.

began her ELT career in the 90s, teaching in the UK, Australia, South Korea, and the Czech Republic before becoming a CELTA, ICELT and Delta teacher trainer at St Giles Brighton. She has participated in teacher training projects in Bangladesh, Russia, Uzbekistan, Senegal, and Ghana, and has a special interest in SEN, providing one-on-one support for St Giles’ students. She is also a Cambridge CELTA Assessor.

JESSICA NEWTON

worked in Vietnam with the British Council, teaching adults and children before returning to the UK and completing her Delta. She moved into academic management at a large language school and worked with teachers as a Delta tutor.

Missing teaching and training, she joined the St Giles teacher training team and started working as a CELTA and Trinity CertPT tutor.

JOHN MORRISON

has over 15 years’ experience in the ELT industry, in the UK and Italy. He has also worked in the publishing sector as a copywriter, subeditor and website editor. He completed both his CELTA and DELTA at St Giles Brighton and, since relocating to London in 2018, has become Assistant Director of Studies at St Giles London Central.

John particularly enjoys teaching Cambridge exam classes and Business English, as well as supporting and mentoring less experienced teachers. In his free time, he enjoys creative writing, running and spending time with his wife and son.

LONDON TEACHER TRAINERS

PHIL PAINTER

has been teaching English since 1995. After working in the Czech Republic for six years, he joined St Giles and he obtained his Delta at St Giles Highgate in 2004. He became a teacher trainer in 2006 and has trained on both Trinity CertTESOL and CELTA courses. In 2014 Phil undertook a teacher training assignment in Havana, Cuba for the St Giles Educational Trust. He has also presented at conferences in Havana and Luxembourg. Phil’s main professional interests are team teaching, using pictures and teaching beginners.

NEIL DODD

Neil’s early career was in arts and entertainment journalism. After a decade of film screenings and hanging out with rock stars he switched to teaching and has since worked in both the state and private sectors. Neil joined St Giles in 2005 and he has been a trainer on both Cambridge CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL courses.

Neil has a particular interest in specialised courses for university students and overseas teachers of English. He is a published author of fiction and he enjoys reading, his gym membership and travelling the world.

MARK TURNER

has a degree in English Literature, and worked in political fundraising before obtaining his CELTA in 2007. After three years of teaching in Italy and Australia, he returned to London in 2010. He gained his DELTA in 2012, and joined St Giles in 2014. He has since continued to build on his experience, and became a teacher trainer. He has a particular interest in teaching English for business and 1-1s, as well as creating material for specialised closed groups, and is interested in the fast-changing nature of language teaching, and the role of AI.
