Advice and Guidance
Work-Based Learning Department programmes Apprenticeships Apprentices are employed, so they earn a salary but can carry on learning the skills and training needed to progress in their job. Our Apprenticeships are based around vocational areas and offer a complimentary mix of vocational training and first hand practical skills. You will be able to mirror what you do in College with what you do in your place and vice versa. Plus, you will gain a number of qualifications to add to your CV. You can expect to work between 30-40 hours per week (including time spent in College). WBLD staff will support you throughout your Apprenticeship and visit you in College and in the workplace.
Pre-Employment programmes Jumpstart Programme Jumpstart aims to support young people in their final year/years of compulsory education by offering an alternative to mainstream education
NEET Engagement Programme (NEP) NEP is a new programme targeting those who are not in education, employment or training. It enables young people to progress onto Work-Based Learning programmes, employment, or employment with training
Personalised Learning Programme (PLP) This programme aims to help those who are not ready or able to directly enter an Apprenticeship programme, further education or employment. The programme includes personal and social development, vocational training and access to functional skills.
Prince’s Trust Team Programme (PTT) This award winning course will help improve your confidence, problem solving skills and teach you how to work as part of a team whilst, quite probably, having the time of your life.

What timescale should I expect if I use this service to get a response back?
Let me introduce you to our apprentice ambassadors ...
On receipt of your email we will endeavour to match you with the right ambassador on the date of receiving (working days only) and ambassadors have two days in which to respond or refer back. We would hope that you should get a response within four working days if not sooner but if there are any delays we will be in touch advising you that we are trying to get an answer for you as quickly as we can
An ambassador is someone who has been where you are now. They have either completed or almost completed an apprenticeship and have agreed to be contacted via email to answer any questions you may have which you may not be comfortable asking your employer, College tutor or reviewing officer. They are volunteers and do not get any financial reward for this but believe in the programme and wish to support others undertaking it.
How do you make contact? It’s simple - you can email your question to the following address wbld@cityplym.ac.uk and we will match the e-mail to the most appropriate ambassador to help you with your request. The ambassador will respond via the WBLD email address and this will be forwarded back to you. You can keep your identity as secret as you like and you do not have to give your name or any personal details as everything will be via email within the WBLD.
What sort of questions can I ask? All questions should be around your apprenticeship/ employment and you cannot ask questions of a personal nature. You may wish to know how someone got over an evidence/assessment problem, or how many hours you should work for example. All ambassadors have agreed to answer any question they feel comfortable with and will only answer using their own experience. They will not give you answers to work you need to do or in fact do any work for you but will support you in finding the answers for yourself, perhaps directing your to a good research website or advising you to purchase a book that will help.
How do I become an ambassador? If you would like to become an ambassador just send an email to WBLD using the address above and a member of staff will be in touch with you to go through the details
Welfare and Support When WBLD staff are not able to resolve personal issues that may be a barrier to learning, they may consider, with your consent arranging support from outside agencies for issues such as: Drug and Alcohol Problems… Housing Issues… Family Planning / Pregnancy… Troubles at home… Work-Based Learning staff have excellent links with agencies that can help with these and other problems.
Sustainability Karen Dewdney is the sustainability representative for the department. Please see Karen if you have any queries. At City College Plymouth we are committed to sustainability. I represent the Work-based Learning Department at monthly Sustainability Working Group meetings, where we share good practice and explore and monitor new ideas for promoting cross-College sustainability. Learner representatives attend our termly departmental sustainability focus group meetings, where their input is valued and ideas are implemented where possible. Members of the 923 Club, which meets every Tuesday, are currently spearheading sustainability within the Learning Warehouse, looking at the practicalities of improving our paper recycling system.
Teaching and learning The Work-Based Learning Department holds regular Teaching and Learning focus groups which aims to improve the quality of our delivery and your learning experience on all our programmes. The Operations Manager, Steve Murphy, chairs these meetings and learner representatives are invited to have a direct impact on their programmes. Please speak to your Training/Reviewing Officer if you would like to take part in these forums or add something to the agenda. This is another opportunity for you to have your say.

Safeguarding The department has a team of Safeguarding Officers who are here to help, advise and support learners who are experiencing difficulty in their lives. This could be drink or drug problem, home life, bullying or generally just not having a good time of it. Most of the time this information is confidential but if we do need to share the information you will always be made aware. The main job of our Safeguarding Officers is to help you if ever you feel you need it.

Learners’ Voice Meetings Learner Feedback Every month, Training Officers and Learners meet to discuss the good points and bad points about the WBLD programmes. These are called ‘Learners Voice Meetings’. Anything can be discussed, including: Work Placements… Policies and Procedures… Work and Training… Trips and Activities…
Disability Forum... Equality & Diversity Forum... Learner Focus Groups... Every student matters forum
The notes taken at Learners’ Voice meetings are read by the management of WBLD and are taken into account when reviewing the way our programmes are delivered. Learners’ Voice sessions identify improvements that can and do make a difference. Learners’ Voice is about listening to learners’ opinions and concerns and involving learners in planning. If you feel you would like to discuss your programme or have any suggestions on how you would like to improve your programme feel free to have a chat with Charlotte Williams who is the Learners’ Voice representative.
