Learning Resources Our Services For Students
Supporting Success
Libraries and Study Centre The libraries, located on the 1st floor of the tower block at Kings Road and on the 1st floor in block C at Goschen, provide varied resources relevant to your course. There are computing facilities, books, journals, DVDs and other media and equipment available. Both libraries have plenty of study space, including provision for silent study and group work. Knowledgeable staff are available at both sites to support your learning. You will need your student card to use the service Furthermore, a Study Centre equipped with PCs is also situated on the 2nd floor of Goschen. Using the Library
Finding Items • Items are searchable through the Library Catalogue, accessed via Moodle’s Learning Resources Service (LRS) pages (accessible via the Student Intranet) or on designated computers in the libraries. • Search by author, title or keyword to check availability and location of individual items. Borrowing Items • With a Student ID card, further education students may borrow a maximum of six items, while higher education students are entitled to eight. Please ask a member of staff about loan durations as late items will incur fines. • You may renew items twice, this can be done in the library, over the phone or via the LRS Moodle page (accessible via the Student Intranet). • Equipment such as headphones is also available.
Online Library The LRS Moodle pages (accessible via the Student Intranet) provide on and off-campus access to a wide range of electronic resources: • Over 1,000 e-books covering many subjects, as well as e-journals, including access to InfoTrac (an online journal/newspaper database, updated daily). • Web guides providing links to websites for research in your subject area via delicious. • Subject guides offering guidance on accessing information in the library. • New items page listing new books, DVDs and journals available in your subject area. • Links to the Plymouth University portal for higher education students. • Access to the library catalogue and electronic copies of all our guides. • Learning Resources news and contact details.
Study Support Librarians can assist with your studies and provide inductions on College resources. Working closely with tutors, we support your learning, helping you develop the study skills required to be successful by providing resources, training and services relevant to the requirements of your course. Through our LRS Moodle pages, we provide on-line guides which explain: • Harvard referencing • using the library catalogue • note taking • plagiarism • researching on the internet. • copyright We are committed to safeguarding your right to work in a secure and productive environment and encourage you to study in a way that will create a positive learning experience for all.
IT Support Log-in • Your student account includes a College e-mail address, a network space for files and a Moodle account (accessible via the Student Intranet). • Wireless access is also available. • Your account is subject to the IT Acceptable Use Policy and the College network has filters to support the I-safety Policy. Programs • We offer Microsoft Office as standard, with OpenOffice as an alternative. • We also supply a range of programs supporting accessibility, as well as specialist software for some courses. Support and Printing • Study Support Assistants (SSAs) are available to help with program use and printing. Cards can be bought for black and white printing. Colour printing is also available.
Media and Print Production Our helpful team within Media and Print Productions (MAPP), situated at Kings Road on the ground-floor of the construction building and on the 2nd floor (C block) at Goschen, is pleased to offer: • colour, black and white copying • laminating • wire, comb and slide binding, with the added extra of clear plastic covers for a professional finish • a wide range of coloured cards and papers • a scan-back service to either an email account or memory stick • advice on copyright issues Opening times: Goschen Centre; Mon-Fri 8.30am-2.30pm Kings Road; Mon-Thurs 8.30am-4.30pm Fri 9.30am-4.00pm (Charges apply for materials and copying)
