Welcome City College Plymouth’s 14-18 vocational programme aims to give you the chance to start real training for future employment from the age of 14. This is your opportunity to choose one of our programmes in place of a school day. If you take part in one of our programmes, you must not forget that it is a part of your Year 10 and Year 11 options and your work at school will need to be successful as well as your work in college. The courses within this project provide varied, exciting and challenging training opportunities. All programmes involve both practical and theory and will prepare you for your first step in your future career. When you have completed your programme you will be able to choose from various options. You will be able to consider whether you: • continue your training on a full-time or part-time basis • progress to an Apprenticeship programme • continue studying at school • apply for employment.

? What do I Need to Know Before I Apply? If you choose to apply for one of the courses offered by this programme it is important that you consider a few things. First of all, it is vital that you really understand that any option at college is not separate from the work you do at school. The choices that you make are all part of your Year 10 and Year 11 programme. To be successful you must work equally hard and have good attendance at college and school. You need to be aware that when you are off-site you are representing your school which puts a lot of responsibility on you to act in an adult way - the way in which all other students, of all ages, are expected to act. It may not sound very much but it is the key to you being successful during the programme. If you earn a place on the programme you may be working in areas that are potentially very dangerous and you will be expected to understand this and behave in a way that is demanded by the College. Because you will be in an adult environment the relationships with the lecturers, other students and support staff will be different. You will be treated as adults, with respect and courtesy, and we will expect you to treat other people in the same way. If you think about college in the same way that people think about being at work, this is only what is normally expected. You will also be expected to sign an agreement with the College just the same way that an employee would sign a contract at work. It is also very important for you to know that it is not easy to get onto this vocational programme (places are limited) and you will need to be really committed to the programme. You must also remember that all the staff who work with you will help you make the change to a new way of doing things, but YOU must also help yourself to be successful on your chosen course. Finally, you should note that a lot of students have a very enjoyable and successful time on these courses.

Motor Vehicle Studies Certificate, Level 1 - ABC What the qualification offers This exciting qualification will encourage and enable those who have an interest in this area of mechanical engineering to acquire knowledge and skills to aid progression to further study or employment. It will give you an introduction to the motor vehicle industry, providing an overview of potential occupations and job roles.

Progression/next steps Successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies provides a sound preparation for further vocational training, such as continuing onto a course or appropriate Apprenticeship at level 2 including: • vehicle fitting • vehicle maintenance and repair • vehicle body and paint operations • roadside assistance and recovery • vehicle parts operations • vehicle sales.

Caring for Children Caring for Children Award/Certificate/Diploma, Level 1 Edexcel What the qualification offers This course is a useful starting point in a career in caring for children. You will learn the basic skills of caring for children and how to support their learning through completing the award and certificate in the first year and progressing to the diploma in the second year. Examples of units studied include: • planning for the physical care and needs of children aged birth to three years • communication skills with children • children’s learning through everyday experiences.
You will be assessed by portfolio tasks and other activities in the classroom. Please note that you will have to have a police check carried out as those with certain types of criminal record are not allowed to be a volunteer or work with children and young people. Progression/next steps Possible progression routes include further education at level 2 on courses covering childcare or health and social care. Other pathways include a childcarebased Apprenticeship or employment.

Construction Skills
Basic Construction Skills Certificate, Level 1 - City & Guilds What the qualification offers This course is ideal for young people who want to work in the construction industry and covers the following subjects: • bricklaying • carpentry • painting and decorating • plastering.

Assessment will be through the building of a portfolio of evidence which will contain evidence of your knowledge and understanding of the areas of study and evidence of the actual tasks you have carried out. The main assessment process will be centred on a project of your choice in your chosen trade area. Progression/next steps On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to progress to a full-time course in your chosen trade area or to an Apprenticeship programme.

Hair and Beauty Hair and Beauty Therapy Award/Certificate/Diploma, Entry Level/ Level 1 - City & Guilds What the qualification offers This course offers an introduction into the hair and beauty industry. It is a ‘hands-on’ practical course with training taking place in a salon environment using the College’s own facilities. The course enables you to explore both hair and beauty to help you decide on which progression route you would like to follow.
Progression/next steps You can progress to a range of full-time courses in either hair or beauty, or to an Apprenticeship programme. Successful completion of this course can lead to further training or assisting positions within a hairdressing/beauty salon.

Hair and Beauty Hair Services Certificate/Diploma, Level 2 - City & Guilds What the qualification offers This course is a hands-on, practical course with training taking place in a salon environment using the College’s own facilities. On this course you will get a thorough grounding in the theory and practice with external visits and competitions to help you find the selfassurance and competence to pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry. The first qualification, the certificate, must be achieved before progression onto the diploma. Excellent attendance and a positive attitude are essential to ensure progression. Progression/next steps You can progress to a range of full-time courses in women’s hairdressing at level 3, or to an Apprenticeship programme. Successful completion of this course may lead to employment in the hairdressing industry as a salon assistant or junior stylist.

Hospitality Introduction to the Hospitality Industry Certificate, Entry Level 3/Level 1 - City & Guilds What the qualification offers This course is a hands-on introduction to the hospitality industry where you will study areas such as customer service, basic food preparation and cooking and
food safety. You’ll also look into healthy eating, and introduction to food commodities, using kitchen equipment and preparing and serving food and drink. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress to a range of full-time courses in hospitality and catering, or to an Apprenticeship programme.

Public Services
Public Services BTEC Certificate, Level 1 - Edexcel What the qualification offers This course aims to provide an environment where you can mature and develop attitudes and an approach to life appropriate to the career of your choice. It involves you completing six different units to give you a knowledge and understanding of the skills and responsibilities of public service employees. You will be involved in classroom-based activities for much of your learning, however there will be regular fitness sessions and a programme of adventure training and visits, including Dartmoor expeditions and visits to some sectors of the uniformed public services.

You will be assessed by completing a portfolio of assignments. Some of these will be marked in College and some will be marked by the examining board. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress on to the next stage of your career by undertaking a public services, or other level two programme to prepare you to join one of the uniformed public services.

Sport Sport and Active Leisure BTEC Certificate, Level 1 - Edexcel What the qualification offers This is an exciting course with practical and theory-based learning carried out in the College’s sports hall and other sporting venues. Subjects studied include: • taking part in sports • the healthy body • assisting a sports leader • health and fitness.
Equipment required: sports kit and equipment (costing around £120) is preferred. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may have the opportunity to progress on to the next stage of your career by undertaking a level two programme in sport or other related areas to prepare you to join the health and fitness industry.

Travel and Tourism BTEC Diploma, Level 1 - Edexcel What the qualification offers Travel and tourism is one of the world’s fastest growing industries and this course can help you develop the skills needed to become part of this exciting world. The course includes lots of practical areas of study such as customer service, the role of air cabin crew and the role of the overseas representative.

Progression/next steps On successful completion you may have the opportunity to progress on to the next stage of your career by undertaking a level two programme to prepare you to join the travel and tourism industry.

What the qualification offers Jumpstart is a programme to support young people in their final year/years of compulsory education. It aims to help young pupils who find the school environment difficult, by introducing more practical-based learning.

As well as helping improve your basic skills you will have the opportunity to experience vocational subjects such as beauty therapy, hairdressing, woodwork, plumbing, business studies and engineering.
Jumpstart can offer you: • team building activities/projects • citizenship activities • job search/interview techniques • community-based projects • talks and visits from/to local employers • access to wider key skills including improve own learning, working with others and problem solving • City & Guilds Profile of Achievement Award • short courses including first aid, and health and safety • Prince’s Trust XL club. Motor Vehicle Studies Certificate, Level 1 What the qualification offers This is an exciting course which covers general vehicle maintenance and repair. Giving you a good insight into the industry, the course provides essential knowledge for the specialist group of competition maintenance and repair technicians. This level 1 qualification

covers the basic technical needs of today’s motor vehicle industry. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress to the level 2 qualification offered at the College, or enter directly into employment.

?eauty Therapy B Beauty Therapy Services Certificate, Level 2 What the qualification offers You may already have the basic practical beauty therapy skills and knowledge and want to develop this to the next stage, or maybe you’re looking to start your career in the beauty industry? You’ll learn more detail and get more practice in providing facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing, make-up and eye treatments and we’ll introduce you to the anatomy and physiology related to each treatment. We’ll also teach you more about health and safety in the workplace, employment skills and reception. Excellent attendance and a positive attitude are essential to ensure progression. You will need good communication skills - you and your fellow students will practice the above treatments (even bikini waxing) on each other before you begin working on clients! Progression/next steps On successful completion you may continue your studies and work towards a further qualification in beauty therapy, or a suitable Apprenticeship. You may also gain work in beauty salons, nail studios etc.

You’ll also get to work on your own personal and interpersonal skills that will help you to be able to manage yourself, and others, more effectively. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress to a level 2 or 3 course in business and administration or a suitable Apprenticeship programme.

Introducing Caring for Children and Young People Certificate, Level 2 - TVC What the qualification offers You will gain the practical experience you need to be able to support children to learn and play. You will also gain a thorough grounding in the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to work with children and young people in a variety of settings within a supervised
role. Gaining this certificate will stand you in good stead to further your career prospects in the field of care for children. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress to a relevant level three course or a suitable Apprenticeship.

Construction Basic Construction Skills (Carpentry/Painting and Decorating/Bricklaying/ Plastering) Certificate, Level 2 School to pick two trade areas to cover the two-day programme. What the qualification offers If you enjoy practical work using your hands, solving detailed problems, and don’t mind working outdoors, then take a look at this course. Our course teaches you the techniques used in all aspects of basic carpentry, painting and decorating, bricklaying, and plastering. You will learn about setting up your workspace, the different techniques you can call upon and the specific tools you need. You will get to practice your new-found skills in a simulated working environment and gain an industry-recognised qualification. Progression/next steps Successful completion of this course will enhance your employment opportunities. You could progress onto the full-time carpentry and joinery diploma or a suitable Apprenticeship programme.

Engineering and Technology Certificate, Level 1 What the qualification offers If you are not sure which branch of engineering will suit your skills and personality, and don’t want to make a decision too soon, then our course will give you the chance to keep your options open but learn at the same time. Our hands-on, practical course will give you a wide range of basic engineering craft skills across several trade areas, and allow you to gain a number of valuable
nationally recognised qualifications. It will focus on practical skills with the required knowledge relating to the trade areas being covered. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress to a level 2 qualification in areas such as motor vehicle maintenance, welding and fabrication or mechanical engineering at the College, or an Apprenticeship in a related area.

Food and Catering
Food Preparation and Cooking NVQ Certificate, Level 1 - QCF What the qualification offers This course starts at a basic level so you’ll be okay even if you know very little about catering. You’ll start by getting to grips with basic knife skills and gradually progress through to making soups and stocks. As you gain knowledge and skills, you’ll move on to currys, pasta dishes and desserts - including pastry. Towards the end of the course you’ll spend a little time filleting fish too. So you see, this course covers a wide range of skills to give you a rounded understanding of the catering trade. You will also have the chance of taking the Level 2 Food Hygiene course (six hours tuition with a multiple-choice test at the end).

Introduction to Professional Cookery Diploma, Level 1 What the qualification offers The Introduction to Professional Cookery can help you become a chef or progress to a more senior chef’s role. You’ll gain a high standard of cookery skills and learn other workplace essentials like health and safety in a modern kitchen. Progression/next steps On successful completion of this course you may progress onto a range of courses at levels 1 or 2, or onto an Apprenticeship.

Women’s Hairdressing Certificate, Level 2 What the qualification offers Can you put people at ease? Do you have loads of patience? Are you creative? Then you’ve got a good head start in the skills that you’ll need to make a success of a career in hairdressing. On our course you will get a thorough grounding in the theory and practice with external visits and competitions to help you find the
self-assurance and competence to pursue a career in the hair and beauty industry. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may continue your studies and work towards a further qualification in hair or beauty or an Apprenticeship. You may also gain employment in the hairdressing industry.

Health and Social Care Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young People Settings Award/Certificate, Level 1 What the qualification offers If you know that you want to work in the caring professions, but are not sure whether to work in health care, social care or childcare, then this course will help you make that final choice. It’s an introductory course that helps to develop your caring skills and qualities in preparation for progression within your chosen career. Progression/next steps On successful completion of this course you may progress to a range of level 2 courses in childcare or health and social care.

Health and Social Care Certificate/Diploma, Level 2 - TVC What the qualification offers This course is aimed at anyone who is thinking of working in a caring environment with adults, such as in a care or residential home. The diploma is made up of mandatory and optional units that will be selected to best suit your goals. There are three pathways that can be selected for your optional units which include; the generic care pathway, dementia, and learning disabilities pathway. Progression/next steps Once you have successfully completed this course you could progress onto a level 3 course in health and social care, or a suitable Apprenticeship programme reflecting your employment responsibilities.

?ospitality H Hospitality Services Diploma, Level 2 - NVQ What the qualification offers Does the thought of dealing with lots of different hospitality tasks excite you? Do you like new challenges every day? One day you could be preparing food and drinks for a wedding party and the next arranging business conference facilities or working on a hotel reception desk! Our course will develop your relevant strengths and show you how to deal with your weaknesses through training to you help juggle these different and demanding roles. Performing Arts Certificate, Level 2 - NCFE What the qualification offers This level 2 certificate aims to help those wishing to start a career in the performing arts industries. The course will develop your practical and analytical skills in performance through either acting, music or a dance focus. The qualification would also be of benefit to you if you would like

During the course there will be an introduction to each of the public services, their roles and selection procedures. This will include visits and visiting speakers which will enable you to work closely with both the armed forces and emergency services. The whole course is underpinned by a programme of sport and fitness training including Dartmoor expeditions, camping, rock-climbing and abseiling. Progression/next steps On successful completion of this programme, possible progression routes include level 2 courses in public services or employment with the armed forces or leisure industry.

It aims to provide an environment in which you can mature and develop an approach to life appropriate for these careers. This will include visits and visiting speakers which will enable you to work closely with both the armed forces and emergency services. ?port S Sport and Active Leisure Diploma, Level 1 What the qualification offers Sport and leisure is a big industry, and year after year it provides work for more than 600,000 people, and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games are still to come - impressive! Feel inspired? If you have an interest in the sport and leisure industry and need to improve your knowledge to gain a career in this area, then this course is for you. It will give you an overview of the sport and leisure industry and put you on the right track to becoming employable. Progression/next steps On successful completion you may progress to a level 2 course in sport or seek employment within the sports industry.
Sport BTEC Extended Certificate, Level 2 - QCF What the qualification offers This course is equivalent to two GCSEs and is suitable for anyone with a deep interest in the working of the human body in sport, health and safety in sport and in planning and leading sports activities. You must be enthusiastic towards practical sport and developing skills, and you should be competent in using computers. Progression/next steps On successful completion of this course you might choose to progress to further education courses at level 2/3, which could then lead on to employment in the fitness industry.

Progression/next steps On successful completion you can progress onto further studies in this area, or you might go straight into working within the sports industry.

BTEC Extended Certificate, Level 2
What the qualification offers Travel and tourism is one of the world’s fastest growing industries and this course can help you develop the skills needed to become part of this exciting world. The course includes lots of practical areas of study such as customer service, the role of air cabin crew and the role of the overseas representative. There are several visits to assist with the completion of coursework and these include places such as Paignton Zoo, Woodlands and tourist attractions in London. There are also optional visits to either New York or a European destination.
What the qualification offers If you are excited about the challenge of the holiday experience for tomorrow’s tourists then our course will give you a solid foundation of knowledge to support your career ambitions. We will teach you skills that are current, relevant and topical. You can use our course as a springboard to more advanced workrelated qualifications or you might just decide to continue your training in your choice of work.
Progression/next steps This qualification gives you an excellent opportunity to develop a career in the travel and tourism industry or progress onto a level 2 travel and tourism course offered at the College.
