It was a year of profound strength for SSM Health and for SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital — one defined by the high-quality, compassionate care that has remained a hallmark since our founding sisters began this healing Mission more than 150 years ago.

The impact of your philanthropy this past year has been nothing short of remarkable. Thanks to your generosity, more than $5.8 million was released in program support to advance surgical innovation, enhance the patient experience, and improve the health of our community. This milestone is a collective celebration of several vital initiatives that you helped bring to life:

• The Healing Hands Campaign: We are nearing the finish line of this $10 million journey, with the final operating room integration plan currently underway.

• Advanced Stroke Care: Our new neuro biplane room is open and serving patients — a nearly $2 million project made possible through a strategic, board-approved appropriation.

• Big Campaign for Little Miracles: This $1 million initiative is now complete, fully funding critical enhancements for our NICU.

The lives touched by these projects are immeasurable. Welcomed by generosity, grounded in legacy

On their first day of employment, nurses step into the Mary Jean Whalen Iacovoni Nursing Education Center with a mix of anticipation and pride, beginning a journey shaped by purpose and possibility. Onboarding opens with a welcome bag, a simple but meaningful gesture thoughtfully prepared through the generosity of donors who believe in the power of nursing.

Within these walls, new nurses are welcomed not only into the profession, but into a community that values their dedication and invests in their future. Through thoughtfully designed learning spaces, hands-on training opportunities, and a culture that celebrates curiosity and skillbuilding, foundation-funded resources help ensure each nurse

feels prepared, supported, and appreciated from the start.

The Nursing Education Center at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital stands as a testament to what philanthropy can make possible. Established through meaningful gifts, including the heartfelt support offered in memory of Mary Jean Whalen Iacovoni, and ongoing support from the St. Mary’s School of Nursing Alumni Endowment, this center provides nurses with a dedicated environment for continuous learning, professional growth, and personal connection.

The tradition of nursing excellence at St. Mary’s School of Nursing created a legacy that now inspires the next generation of nurses as

they begin their journey. A simple welcoming gesture on day one connects new nurses to this legacy, more than 100 years in the making. As new nurses unpack their welcome bags, they are reminded that they are joining not just a workplace, but a community rooted in excellence, compassion, and enduring support.

The heart of the matter: A legacy of trust

In the quiet corridors of SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, history isn’t just found in the archives; it is found in the people.

“With a grateful heart, I humbly honor Dr. Phelan with his 50th Guardian Angel tribute for walking alongside me and being a reassuring presence throughout my healing journey.

This past year, two legacies converged in a way that perfectly illustrates the soul of our healing Mission. Director of Volunteer Services and Guest Relations

Joanne Johnson, a beloved cornerstone of our hospital family with 53 years of dedicated service, found herself in a new role: that of a patient. And at her side was Dr. John Phelan, a cardiologist whose name has become synonymous with excellence and empathy.

The occasion was marked by a milestone that, on the surface, seemed to belong to the doctor.

Joanne’s grateful tribute gift pushed Dr. Phelan past a historic threshold: his 50th Guardian Angel Award. It is a staggering achievement, yet when asked to sit for a feature on his accolades, Dr. Phelan’s response was immediate and humble.

“Don’t make this about the awards,” he insisted. “It’s about partnership.”

The two-way street of healing

For Dr. Phelan, the “Guardian Angel” pins on his white coat aren’t trophies; they are symbols of a sacred contract. He believes that the most advanced cardiac technology in the world is secondary to a simple, human foundation: a trusted partnership.

“Being a physician is about being present,” Dr. Phelan explains. “It’s a two-way street. My role is to

provide information, tools, and the unwavering support to overcome challenges. But the patient has to meet me there. They have to provide the trust and the hard work necessary to regain their health. Joanne is the living embodiment of that work.”

Joanne, who has seen five decades of changes within these hospital walls, knew exactly what she was looking for in a physician. She found it in Dr. Phelan’s willingness to walk beside her through every setback and every small victory. Their relationship wasn’t just a clinical interaction; it was a collaborative effort to ensure a 50-plus-year career of service could continue into its next chapter.

A debt to mentors

Dr. Phelan’s philosophy on partnership didn’t emerge in a vacuum. He traces his approach back to the early days of his residency, to his father and the mentors who saw something in him before he saw it in himself.

“I was young, and perhaps I hadn’t yet earned the level of confidence they placed in me,” he recalls with

a smile. “But they believed in me. They taught me that the culture of medicine isn’t just about the ‘save,’ it’s about the stewardship of the person in front of you. They taught me that if you are present for the setbacks, the successes mean so much more.”

It is that same confidence that Dr. Phelan now pours into his patients. He provides the roadmap, but he celebrates the patient as the driver. To him, Joanne’s gift isn’t a tribute to his skill, it’s a celebration of their shared journey.

An example for generations

This partnership — rooted in mutual respect, transparency, and shared effort — is more than just a success story between a doctor and a patient. It is the essence of the culture our founding sisters established over a century ago.

As we look toward the future of health care, the story of Joanne and Dr. Phelan serves as our North Star. It reminds us that while the tools of medicine will continue to evolve, the healing Mission will always

depend on the strength of the bond between the healer and the healed.

Joanne’s more than 50 years of service and Dr. Phelan’s 50th award are milestones of time, but their partnership is a milestone of the heart. It is a legacy we are committed to nurturing for generations to come.

Celebrating the impact of philanthropy

Looking ahead, SSM Health St. Mary’s Foundation is honored to once again host the Garden Reception on June 18, 2026, at Barnwood Events. This cherished gathering will continue the tradition of celebrating the benefactors whose generosity strengthens our ability to care for the community.

Last year, the Foundation hosted the annual Garden Reception on June 19, also at Barnwood Events. The event celebrates and recognizes the generous contributions of the Leadership Giving Circle benefactors who support the healing Mission of SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

Board directors, leaders at SSM Health in Wisconsin and the hospital, and friends of the hospital came together to celebrate our shared commitment to the patients and families who depend on us. The evening also served as an expression of gratitude for the lives touched through 2024 program support, which exceeded $2.2 million.

A Big Campaign for Little Miracles

The evening was further highlighted by the exciting update on A Big Campaign for Little Miracles, our renewed commitment to expanding care for our tiniest patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Jessica Urso, RN, NICU Manager, emphasized the campaign’s clear goal: to ensure these little lives have the best chance of survival, growth, and a bright future. Support for this initiative advances essential technology, staffing, and lifesaving resources for vulnerable newborns. (Read more about A Big Campaign for Little Miracles, pg. 8.)

Every second counts in the NICU — and your support is making those seconds matter. Thank you for making a difference!

We’re so excited to show you the impact of your generosity as we close out A Big Campaign for Little Miracles that began in late 2024.

Your gifts to support the SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are part of the special initiative to provide $1 million in support for lifesaving equipment and essential technology upgrades. Every day in our NICU, life begins in the most fragile way. Our 38-bed unit is one of the busiest and now most advanced in the region. Here’s what we’ve been able to provide, thanks to you:

Ultrasound — Having a dedicated ultrasound machine for the NICU has eliminated the need for staff to borrow or share machines with other high-demand departments — ensuring immediate access when every second counts. Many of our babies are extremely premature or critically ill and require central lines to administer medications and fluids. Initially, these lines are placed through the umbilical cord for the first seven to 10 days after birth. For ongoing medical needs, a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) via a dedicated point of care ultrasound machine becomes essential, allowing providers to reduce attempts

and increase the success rate of PICC placements, enhancing both comfort and outcomes.

Jet ventilators — Babies born in extreme prematurity — before 28 weeks gestation — face significant respiratory challenges. Their lungs are underdeveloped and lack the movement needed to breathe independently. Traditional ventilators, designed for adults, can cause substantial lung damage. Jet ventilators are a gold standard in neonatal respiratory care. They allow us to deliver lifesaving support in the gentlest, most effective way possible, protecting fragile lungs and improving long-term outcomes for the tiniest patients we serve.

Transport isolettes — A new single isolette and a twin isolette replace earlier models that had served our team well for nearly a decade. These updated units reflect the latest standards in neonatal transport care and

ensure our team is equipped with the most reliable and effect tools available. These isolettes are more than just carriers — they are mobile intensive care units designed to stabilize and support fragile newborns during transfer. Each includes a vital signs monitor, ventilator, IV pumps, and temperature regulation system, helping to conserve the baby’s energy and maintain critical functions throughout the healing journey.

Additional funds raised will support the ongoing needs of the department as the SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital NICU continues to play a key role in our community. Honoring the legacy of Rita A. Tubbs

Few individuals have woven their lives into the story of SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital as completely as Rita A. Tubbs. Born at St. Mary’s, educated in its School of Nursing, married to a man she met while caring for him as a student nurse, and ultimately one of the hospital’s most dedicated volunteers, Rita’s connection to SSM Health St. Mary’s spanned more than 80 years .

Rita entered the St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1953 and graduated in 1956. During her training, she cared for a patient named Tom — the man who became her husband just one week after graduation. Their life together centered on faith, service, and their growing family of seven children — all born at St. Mary’s Hospital. Rita paused her nursing career to raise their family, drawing on her training to tend to the daily needs of her busy household. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren became the heart of her world. She attended every sporting event, recital, practice, and performance, teaching — by quiet example — the values of love, kindness, and perseverance.

When her youngest child reached high school, Rita returned to St. Mary’s Hospital as a volunteer. What began as one day a week grew into nearly three decades of dedicated service. She joined the St. Mary’s Auxiliary, served as its President from 1999 - 2002, and later completed nine years on the St. Mary’s Foundation Board. By the time her service was recorded, Rita had contributed more than 22,000 volunteer hours — an incredible legacy of commitment.

“As a colleague in her nursing class, I remember Rita as a leader in her own compassionate way. She was fun to be with. The cocktail parties she and Tom hosted before celebrating our yearly class reunion are unforgettable.”

Rita was equally dedicated to her community, giving her time and talents to organizations including Sunshine Place, the Sun Prairie Library, Sacred Hearts School, the YMCA, the Colonial Club, and the Sun Prairie Civic Theater. She received several community awards, but recognition was never her motivation; her service flowed from a deep desire to help others.

To ensure that her spirit of care would continue, Rita established the Rita A. Tubbs Endowment to support scholarships for SSM Health St. Mary’s volunteers interested in pursuing careers in health care. Rita gave generously in her lifetime to SSM Health St. Mary’s Foundation. When she knew her time on this earth was coming close to an end, she quietly but very personally gave two final legacy gifts to support SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital NICU and Volunteer Services.

Rita passed away on February 1, 2025, leaving behind a life defined by faith, family, and service. She will always be remembered for her lifelong contributions to St. Mary’s Hospital and the Sun Prairie community.

Thanks to the efforts of her dear friends and fellow volunteers, a commemorative bench in the main hall of St. Mary’s Hospital now bears a plaque honoring Rita’s unwavering dedication to the Mission, Vision, and Values that she embodied so beautifully.

Rita’s legacy continues in every act of service, inspired by her example.

Dina Boyle, Regional Vice President of Philanthropy, reflected on Rita’s presence at St. Mary’s Hospital, “The bench is a fitting final tribute, located in the hall she walked so many times, available to all who are weary from a day of uncertainty, patient care, or service. Rita is forever missed but never forgotten.”

The 5th annual SSM Health Madison Open returns on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison. We look forward to another great day of golf, community, and support for the health initiatives that make a difference for our patients and families.

Celebrating the 2025 event

On Monday, September 15, 2025, we teed off at Blackhawk Country Club under clear skies and unseasonably warm weather. A total of 116 golfers came together to champion community health initiatives, impressively raising more than $120,000.

The event also spotlighted The Big Campaign for Little Miracles, which aimed to enhance care for

the tiniest, most vulnerable patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. Attendees had the opportunity to contribute through our special Pay It Forward hole, and the response was inspiring. We raised $5,000 towards the campaign. Thank you to Jess Urso, Miranda London, and Jen Wisotzke for sharing powerful stories that showcased the incredible impact our nurses make every single day.

The SSM Health Madison Open was made possible thanks to the generous support of our compassionate community and the outstanding efforts of our volunteers.
