The problem stemmed from a 2019 resurfacing project by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), which lowered the freeway bridge over Goddard Road and introduced grooved pavement. This resulted in a significant rise in noise levels affecting residents in the subdivision and surrounding areas. In May of 2019, the City of Southgate was first made aware of the issue when representatives from the Southampton Homeowners Association addressed City Council on the matter.
