Gronlund is Rotary•s Citizen of the Year By BILL STEVENSON
As she described her volunteering experience, "It was only supposed to happen for a year or two." Well, as it happened, it turned into a lifetime of caring and giving to others. And for her "Service Above Self," the Grosse Ile Rotary named Jo-Ann Gronlund, the 2026 Grosse Ile Citizen of the Year at their May 28 meeting held at the Grosse Ile Yacht Club. Rotary Co-Presidents Krishelle Kohler and Joyce Reedy reiterated that, "The Rotary has recognized a 'Grosse Ile Citizen of the Year,' since 1961 and recognizes those who make our Island a better place to live and encourages others to participate in worthy community activities." "The selection committee looks at a wide range of criteria: commitment without remuneration, active long-term engagement, mentors/coaches/advises others, self-initiated involvement, not seeking attention or recognition, a role model for youth, a lifestyle
of volunteerism, and one who demonstrates our Rotary values of 'Service Above Self"' At the Rotary Citizen of the Year ceremony, tributes poured out from Joan Strickler, Lori Rumley, Larry Swick, Mary Jane Colwell, Karin Cozzi, Rotarian Dr. Bud Uday, and Steve Benson. All characterized Jo-Ann Gronlund as "Unfailingly kind. An efficient manager. Selfless. A pillar of our community. Just full of love and grace." Most can remember Mrs. Gronlund for her 29 years of service to Grosse Ile families as the administrative assistant to the principals and faculty of Meridian Elementary. From 1976 to 2005 she was known for her multitasking abilities: performing secretarial duties, bandaging boo-boos, listening to children, working with parents and staff-providing a warm, welcoming environment to the Meridian family.
