Gala Event Held at Centennial Farm Celebrating 250 Years of Community Can’t say Grosse Ile doesn’t love its history! On Saturday, July 25, the Grosse Ile Historical Society and the Grosse Ile Recreation Commission sponsored a gala event at Centennial BILL STEVENSON Farm highlighting history, community, and family fun. And from the smiles on face-painted youngsters to the steady homage and resolve of veterans of past wars, the whole day was a huge success. Typical comments overheard: “This is cool. We should do this kind of event once a year.” “This whole scene is something out of a Hallmark movie.” “Small town pride at its best.”

“It reminds us how special Grosse Ile is, and why we’re proud to call it Home.” The day kick-started with bicycle tours of the Island. “Le grande Tour d’Ile (15 miler), and Le petite Tour (5 miles), were well attended and sponsored by the Island Girl Bicycle Gang and the Rotary Club. From a stage erected in the Centennial Farm commons area, Master of Ceremonies Dr. Patrick Mech kept the festivities moving and the crowd pleased with his blend of humor and serious announcements. The formal flag raising and Township semiquincentennial ceremony provided opportunities for solemn civic moments. The flag flown over the SEE 250, PAGE 17
