How Extremely Cold Weather Impacts Fishing in Your Region

Fish experience a sharp drop in metabolism when water temperatures dip below 60°F Species like Tarpon and Snook become very lethargic, causing themtomoveandfeedsignificantlylesstosimplyconservetheirenergy.

Snook tend to be highly sensitive to extremely cold climates and typically struggle when water temperatures fall into the 50°Frange. Long lasting exposure usually leads to ‘Cold Shock’and/or death The days following our recent extreme cold fronts led to many Snook floating belly up. I typically find our fish in potholes or deep dips in the flats as they act as primary holding zones for ourtroutandredfish.

While wind can often create muddy and cloudy shallow water with reduced visibility, I tend to switch to using scented baits like Shrimp and cut Blue Crab. Following our extreme cold fronts, I’d always recommend fishing midday between 10am and 3pm as this is typically the most productive windowwhenthesunprovideswarmerwaterwhichthefishprefer.

If you’re looking for an awesome winter inshore fishing experience, look no further than Reel Harmony Fishing Charters where I’ll ensure we catch fish even on the coldest of days. “Catching for a Cause”

Captain Eddie Bussard of Volusia County, Florida, stands as a respected and influential figure in the state’s outdoor heritage. Known for his lifelong dedication to ethical hunting, conservation, and traditional outdoor skills, Bussard built a legacy rooted in knowledge, integrity, and deep respect for the land A longtime resident of the Osteen area in southwest Volusia County, he became widely recognized not only as a skilled outdoorsman but also as a mentor, educator, and advocate for Florida’s rural way of life As a local Bass guide he has helped over 1000 of his customers to catch their personal best right here on the famousStJohnsRiver.

Growing up among the pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and winding waterways of Central Florida, Eddie Bussard developed an early connection to the outdoors The landscapes of Volusia County including the St. Johns River basin and surrounding wilderness servedashisclassroom.

From a young age, he learned to track game, understand wildlife behavior, and navigate challenging terrain. Over time, he became especially known for his expertise in hunting with hounds, particularly in the pursuit of wild hogs, a demandinganddeeplyrootedFloridatradition Beyond his field accomplishments, Bussard became a voice for conservation and ethical hunting and fishing practices. As Florida experienced rapid development and habitat loss, he consistently advocated for preserving natural landsandmaintainingresponsiblewildlifemanagement.

Hebelievedthatethicalhuntersandanglers play a crucial role in conservation efforts by helping manage wildlife populations and protecting natural ecosystems for futuregenerations.

Captain Bussard also reached a broad audience through his television program, Swamp Talk The show provided viewers with insights into Florida’s hunting culture, dog training methods, and outdoor traditions. His straightforward storytelling and authentic passion resonated with audiences across the state. Through television, public appearances, field trials, and mentorship, he passed down practical knowledge and values to younger generations, ensuring that traditional outdoorskillswouldcontinuetothrive.

Today, the same outdoor community that Captain Bussard spent decades mentoring is coming together to support him during a challenging time On April 19, 2026, a benefit bass fishing tournament titled

“Catching for a Cause” will be held at Downtown Sanford Marina on Lake Monroe.

“Catching for a Cause” represents more than a fishing tournament it is a gathering of friends, supporters, hunters, anglers, and community members who wish to give back to a man who has given so much to Florida’s outdoor heritage. Participants will launch from Downtown Sanford Marina at safe-light and fish the productive waters of Lake Monroe and the historic St Johns River system known for its strong largemouth bass population Weigh-in will be at 2:30 pm, awards, raffle salesandcommunityfellowshipwillfollow the day’s competition to be hosted at “520 On the Water” next to the Sanford Marina and launch site. Proceeds from entry fees, sponsorships, and donations will go directlytowardassistingCaptainBussard

with his medical bills and recovery from his recent surgery. Even those who do not fish are encouraged to attend, contribute, and show their support. The event highlights the strength and unity of Florida’s outdoor community a community shaped in many ways by Bussard’s leadership, mentorship, andexample

The naming of the tournament, “Catching for a Cause,” reflects both the spirit of fishing and the heartfelt purpose behind the event. It symbolizes neighbors and fellow outdoorsmen casting their lines not only into the water, but also in support of someone who dedicated his life to preserving thetraditionstheycherish.

Over 5,000 invasive green iguanas removed from Florida’s ecosystems

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced that 5,195 invasive green iguanas were removed from Florida’s ecosystems under Executive Order 26-03, thanks to the collaborative efforts of many members of the public, partners, and staff. The EO has since closed and the FWC is no longer accepting live greeniguanasfromthepublic.

Special regulations under the EO temporarily allowed people to remove live, cold-stunned green iguanas from the wild without a permit and bring them to select FWC offices on Feb. 1–2, during a period of extended cold temperaturesinSouthFlorida.

“The special regulations under EO 26-03 provided a unique opportunity for members of the public to remove cold-stunned green iguanas from their property during the recent unusual cold weather and bring them to the FWC, no permit required,” said FWC Executive Director Roger Young. “As an invasive species, green iguanas have negative impacts on Florida’s environment and economy. The removal of over 5,000 of these nonnative lizards in such a short time span was only possible thanks to the coordinated efforts of many staff members in multiple FWC divisions and offices, our partners, and of course the many residents that took the time to collect and turn in cold-stunnediguanasfromtheirproperties.”
