MESSAGE FROM SAFETY SUPPLY CO INC

Achieving 50 years within any industry is no small feat and at Safety Supply Co., we take this as a testament to our dedication to excellent service, quality products, and lasting relationships with our partners and clientele.

The business was originally started by Safety Supply Canada in 1966 as a branch of the Canadian firm, and at a time when there was no safety store of any sort in Barbados. The local operation was then taken over by the current owners in 1971, who had another business importing industrial equipment. The two companies were merged in the early ’70s which is how Safety Supply Co. comes to carry several lines of industrial equipment as well as safety supplies.

Back then, the Barbadian workforce was not sensitized about the need for safety, for there was no legislation to enforce, nor systems on a national scale for recording workplace incidents, time lost, cost of injuries, etc.

The country has come a long way since then, with legislation being enacted in 2005 mandating a certain standard of employer responsibility for the protection of employees.

However, as standards continually evolve and improve with technological developments, and with the experience and insight gained following events and disasters around the world, the legislation has and will be revised in line with international standards. Already, most of the larger firms in Barbados, many having affiliations with overseas branches, operate at standards that are obtained in the more developed regions of North America and Europe. From our perspective at Safety Supply Co., 95% of the goods traded are manufactured to North American or European standards.

We offer products and solutions applicable to a wide range of clients from households (backup watersupply systems and filtration) to large construction projects (fire/security alarm systems, integral fire equipment). Within our industry, sales of PPE (personal protective equipment) represent the greater portion of revenue followed by industrial equipment and recurring servicing/ repairs of fire and industrial equipment.

This is indicative of trends showing that safety on the job has steadily increased as an area of focus for Barbadian businesses.

As Safety Supply Co. continues to grow, we remain committed to supporting the importance of workplace and industry safety. In the coming years, we will evolve as a company to consolidate our operations for greater efficiency and consistent supply. We are looking towards expansion in the future – a self-service store, supporting activities for your safety needs such as training, workshops, and seminars, better e-commerce platforms, and the possibility of establishing strategic partnerships in some of the other Caribbean islands.
