They Were So Fortunate to Have Friends
The twenty-six trotters and pacers tagged for slaughter recently had very wonderful friends save their lives. SRF is most grateful to be able to get each one safe and cared for. When this group was brought to the attention of SRF, identifications were quickly made. Calls to the breeder of each horse and their past owners began while SRF made a plea for help for them. Doing this for so many years, the responses to these calls always vary. Some immediately drive to the pen to save the life of the horse; some people claim they didn’t own the horse, registration shows otherwise; some folks are of the mindset that the horse deserves it; others step up and help SRF reach out to others; and some even help by assisting to raise the needed funds. We have even experienced the kindness of those willing to take back the horse they had bred, and when the identification indicating it was not their horse, they took the horse anyway. Of this group one horse went back to his breeder. Upon arrival to safety Living Truth presented with advanced neurologic issues and was put at peace. R Master Scott, “Scottie” had fourteen owners in just four years when he raced, and we can assume that he had worked in the rural areas since 2014. When SRF took him in and offered rest and rehabilitation, some good food, and a spitshine, we found such a handsome guy! Here he is under saddle preparing for a new permanent address with a loving adopter-that’s SRF’s goal, safe for life!
The SRF Race Series
The SRF Race Series is a gift from the Meadowlands Racetrack and Jeff Gural. The race was written with a $200. entry fee donated to SRF directly for 3 year olds. The Meadowlands and Jeff Gural matched every dollar of these entry fees. This series is the first of its kind, initiated by Mr. Gural, and brought 177 entries to the race. His ingenuity served owners and trainers, and trotters and pacers in need of help after racing. It’s a great benefits package, a first of its kind and hopefully just the start of what it can become. SRF is very grateful to Jeff Gural for this outstanding support, and congratulates all the winning horses, owners and trainers.
