The University of Sydney is not a substantially democratic institution. However, students and staff can have a voice through their representative organisations. The SRC elections are an important opportunity to exercise this voice for undergraduate students. Each year there are elections to elect candidates for President of the SRC, Representative to Council, delegates to the National Union of Students, and editors of
Honi Soit.
This year, there is the addition of a referendum on a proposed academic boycott of certain Israeli institutions. The referendum results from a successful petition by Students Against War, who presented 524 valid signatures, triggering the referendum and a debate on the proposition that appears in this edition of Honi Soit, (pp 18–20).
