STIMULANT AND FENTANYL OVERDOSE IN NATIVE COMMUNITIES Stimulants include cocaine, meth, MDMA, and prescription drugs like Ritalin or Adderall. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid. Even a small dose of fentanyl can be lethal on the first use.

OKLAHOMA AI/AN overdose death rates have steadily increased since 2020. There were an average of 116 overdose deaths each month in 2023. There were 1,398 overdose deaths total in 2023 and 61.5% had at least one potential opportunity for intervention.

In 2023, AI/AN people had the highest overdose death rates at 70.4 per 100,000 persons in the U.S.A. Most of those were aged 35-44.

Opioids & stimulants, alone or in combination, accounted for 85.6% of overdose deaths.

2023 116 AI/AN people died from meth overdose. 80% had a history of substance use and 24% had a history of mental illness. 93 AI/AN people died from an opioid overdose. 83% had a history of substance use and 28% had a history of mental illness.

Misclassification of race and Hispanic origin on death certificates results in the underestimation of death rates by as much as 34% for AI/AN non-Hispanic people and 3% for Asian nonHispanic and Hispanic people.
