Shguu mdm dackya'wa hagwilhoo dsihla 'dsuu baashg "You have to hold on to the rope when the wind blows hard"
While you can not control the wind, you can control your anchor. We chose our third theme, a Shm'algyack phrase borrowed humbly from the Dictionary of Shm'algyack by Donna May Roberts, as a reminder of the power held in interlocking communities — in weaving the rope — through relationships, shared experiences, successful projects, and unsuccessful attempts. To honor the significance of threading together generations, disciplines, and geographies. That rope, carefully tethered to the shores of Southeast Alaska like a holdfast, is what we rely on when the weather shakes us. We can be blown, but we won’t be uprooted.
The stories held in these pages show how the people, partners, and communities of Southeast Alaska, remain steady in tumultuous times, fortifying our anchor and tending the rope that locks us to each other, and to our home.
