Employers reveal top 10 most common interview mistakes BY JOSIE GURNEY THE DAILY TELEGRAPH With almost two thirds of young people saying they would benefit from interview training, a new survey reveals biggest mistakes candidates make As viewers of The Apprentice prepare to watch Lord Sugar’s hopefuls attempt the interviews round of the process, a new survey has revealed the top mistakes that candidates make when going for a job. According to a survey of employers, over half said that failing to do enough research in advance was one of the biggest downfalls for candidates, while nearly a third said that ‘showing off’ was a common failing. A similar number said that not acting interested or engaging with the interviewer was a common problem, while others said that asking no questions at all about the role was also an issue. In contrast to many candidates on The Apprentice though, only 6 percent of employers said that being too modest would decrease a prospective candidate’s chances. The research, carried out by Barclay’s LifeSkills, also found that, in the head-to-head group interview scenarios, dominating the conversation and not listening to others ranked among the top errors.

Showing off The research comes as Government statistics, published today, revealed that in the period from August to October, the number of unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds fell to 625,000, down 98,000 from the previous quarter and 129,000 from last year. This translates to a fall in the unemployment rate from 16.6 percent a year ago, to 13.6 percent today. This is in comparison to a UK wide unemployment rate of 5.2 percent. According to today’s research from LifeSkills, a quarter of unemployed young people feel that they perform badly in interviews, and almost two-thirds think that they would benefit from job interview training. Kirstie Mackey, head of LifeSkills, created by Barclays, added: “It is so important for young people to know how to properly prepare for and behave in interviews. This is particularly true for young people who have recently graduated or are new to the competitive world of work. “As the research reflects, 64 percent of unemployed young people say they would benefit from job interview training and would like help developing their communication skills to put their best self forward. “At LifeSkills, we understand that interview techniques don’t come naturally to everyone, which is why we offer a range of tips and advice to help young people know what to expect in interviews, and to be as prepared as possible.” “Ask yourself, have I got the skills to do the job? Solomon Akhtar, the youngest ever contestant on The Apprentice, said: “I learned the hard way in my Apprentice interview that it’s so important to be prepared in order to succeed. “It was clear that I hadn’t put enough thought into my business plan and wrongly believed that my confidence and charm would win Claude over. Even though it didn’t go to plan, I am really grateful for the experience.”
Speaking to the Telegraph previously, James Darley, head of graduate recruitment at Teach First, said it was important that graduates emphasize the skills that they have. “You always need to think around ‘skills, knowledge, experience’,” he said. “Have I got the skills to do the job? Have I got the knowledge to do the job and have I got the experience that the organization is looking for?”
