Aerating gets more oxygen, nutrients and water into the roots BY KEN MOON SPECIAL TO SPRINGSHOUSES.COM
Dear Ken: Every time we run the hot water tap in one upstairs lavatory, we get a loud chattering. What should I do? – Calvin It’s a good idea, especially if you live in an area with denser, clay soils--like near the foothills. And, anyway, as all lawns age, the turf gets more tightly entwined and compacted. Aeration lets some more oxygen, nutrients and water get deeper into the roots. They then go deeper into the soil, creating a more drought-resistant and less water-demanding lawn. I like to do it twice a year--now and again in the spring (by the way, my landscaping friends say that, if you can only afford to

do it once, autumn is the better choice). It should cost around $60 for the average yard, or you can rent a machine at the neighborhood rental center and do it yourself. Water the lawn the day before you aerate so the probes can go deeper and pull out longer soil plugs. Follow the plugging with a good fertilizer and then water generously. Incidentally, over seeding of thinned-out lawns works better after the early spring aeration, since lawn weeds will not have germinated by then. Hand seeding of isolated bare spots right now is OK, though. Dear Ken: My water heater pilot blows out frequently. Any ideas to prevent this? – Michael
If you have a water heater built before the sealed combustion chamber requirement, you’ll see a burner access door at the bottom. Turn the control to PILOT so the burner doesn’t come on while you’re fiddling with it. Remove the exterior panel first, then the inner metal cover--the one closest to the burner. Leave that one off and replace the outer access panel. Sometimes that will set up a different drafting pattern so the air by-passes the pilot. It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try. Don’t forget to restore the knob to the ON position. Sometimes you may need to delve deeper into the pilot light and its condition. Turn it off and use an emery board to scratch and clean around the pilot bunter hole and the thermocouple the flame impinges on. If it still blows out, have a licensed gas technician check the pressures and then perhaps adjust the controls for a stronger flame. The tech may also recommend extending the flue pipe on the roof a little higher to avoid downdrafts. Dear Ken: The flickers have returned and are banging on the side of the house. How can we distract these pesky creatures? – Marge Flickers (woodpeckers by any other name) are attracted too noisy surfaces. It’s a territorial thing— but is usually more common the spring (lucky you, you have a guy who wants to beat the rush). Over the years, folks have suggested all sorts of “scarecrow” type remedies--like shiny reflective objects and fake owls--but only two methods seem to work. One is to repel them by squirting some pepper spray on the areas they peck at. The other is to accommodate them by building a nesting box high up in the eaves at your house. You can buy a pre-made model at a wild bird or feed store – or you can find plans to build your own on the Web. Dear Ken: I’ve got an old cedar chest. It was handed down to me by a distant cousin, but it’s full of moth ball smells. How can I deodorize it? – Bruce They’re probably fir or some other such structural wood. Lumber comes out here from, say, Washington or Oregon, where the humidity is somewhat higher. Once they are installed on your porch under a load, they start to dry out; the only way they can react is to twist and split. Once you’re sure the movement has stopped, fill the cracks with ordinary acrylic spackling, using a plastic putty knife. Why not caulking? Because it is sticky and will show as a dirty smudge after a while. It may take 2 or 3 applications of the spackling; sand between each one, and then prime and paint with a good exterior latex material. Ken Moon is a home inspector in the Pikes Peak region.
