Dear Ken: What was the name of the drain clearing stuff you have mentioned on your show? – Lisa Ken Moon
It’s generically called plumber’s acid — a strong form of sulfuric that cuts through almost anything. It works especially well in shower stalls that start to smell. But there is a new, nonchemical approach I now like better. You simply insert a small brush down that drain. It looks like a miniaturized version of a regular bottle brush, and is attached to a flexible, wire handle that allows it to snake down all the way into the trap under the drain. When you pull it out all that hair and other gunk trapped in the drain comes with it. You can find them in varying lengths at the hardware store for less than $15. Dear Ken: My cabinets need help. What can I
use to get grease and grime off where people open the doors and drawers? – Douglas Here’s’ another job for our old friend, white vinegar; full strength works well, but don’t scrub too vigorously. If the smudges remain, switch to mineral spirits. Afterwards, use some furniture polish, Scotts Liquid Gold or Olde English to shine them up. This is a good time to recommend the installation of cabinet knobs. They lessen the buildup of greasy smudges along the edges of the doors and drawers because the kids will grab the knob instead of pawing at the wood. Dear Ken: Last winter I used salt on the driveway. It has now turned to gravel. What can I do? I’d like to get it looking good before this coming winter. – Carl It may not just be the salt — although I do recommend using
small amounts of “concrete friendly” material and rinsing it off as soon as possible. But a bigger factor could be the harshness of the last few winter seasons. If snow and ice are allowed to sit on the driveway, then it goes through those daily freeze-thaw cycles — which break down that smooth surface, exposing the rocky under-texture of the concrete. Bottom line: It’s vital to immediately clear snow from concrete surfaces — especially north-facing areas that get little winter sun. You could skim on a concrete patching Compound — like Quikrete — in a thin layer to cover the damage. But that’s not a long term solution, especially in areas that you drive on. The only reliable and permanent fix is to replace the damaged sections. Dear Ken: I purchased a chest of drawers that has smoke odor inside. How do I get rid of it? – Marge Wood, of course, is very porous,
and hangs on to anything that touches it. Try washing the raw wood innards of the whole piece — including all surfaces of the drawers and the inside framework — with a solution of white vinegar and water or Murphy’s Oil Soap. Then, take the drawers outside for an hour or two to dry in the sun. That should eliminate most of the odor problems. If you’re still not happy, you could apply a clear sealer or line its insides with plastic shelf paper. Dear Ken: I have moss rock fireplace, and it’s looking pretty shabby. Also, it’s also always dusty. Any ideas? – Pauline You could stain the grout lines with a water-based, acrylic paint applied with a small paint brush. Use a darker color to contrast with the gray rock. Its tedious work, but it will accentuate and highlight each slab of this gorgeous material. Suck up dust once in a while with a vacuum and furniture brush. And don’t forget
to spray a little diluted beer on to the surface now and then. That will re-invigorate the lichen clinging to each rock. Dear Ken: There was 6 inches of water in my crawl space this last spring. It’s all been cleaned up, but they used lime in there. Is that OK? – Rick Usually not. Lime is pretty hard chemically on concrete. It actually eats away at the surface. Use a scrub brush and some warm water spiced with a little white vinegar to scour away as much as you can. A dry crawl space will allow less of this deterioration, so make sure the outside water sources drain away, and that there’s plenty of ventilation down there. As a homebuilder I am often asked, “When is the best time to build a custom home?” The easy answer is “anytime,” and that is certainly true. Because of new technologies and better building products in general, building through the winter months no longer presents the obstacles it once did. Many people are under the misconception that colder temperatures are an impediment to building — especially when it comes to excavating
and pouring a foundation. However, with the additives specifically designed for today’s concrete mixes, as long as the temperatures do not dip into the single digits, your foundation is going to cure normally and be as strong as those poured during the summer. By beginning the build in the latter part of the year the homebuyer is able to use the months of inclement weather as a time to focus on plan design and interior and exterior design selections. This opens up the spring
and summer months for bringing the home to completion — just in time for the beginning of the new school year in the fall. Regardless of when the decision is made to begin building, a good rule of thumb for a custom home build is to plan six to seven months from start to finish, once the permit to build has been issued. Prior to that time your architect will be designing the house plans, guiding them through all of the necessary engineering
phases, and then lastly submitting them to the building department for final approval. This process can be as short as 45 days or as long as several months, depending on how quickly the buyer is able to make decisions and keep additional last minute changes to a minimum. Lastly, there are also market conditions to be considered in determining the best time to construct a custom build. With historic lows in existing home
inventory, a custom home is a great solution. As well, current interest rates are extremely competitive and building materials are always more economical during the fall and winter than in the spring and summer. So while any homebuilder will tell you it’s always a great time to build, several factors indicate that there’s no time like the present.
