Rotary Club of East Colorado Springs presents check for $10,500 to Trampled Rose NEWSWIRE The Rotary Club of East Colorado Springs recently presented a check for $10,500 to Becky Kiser, Founder and President of Trampled Rose, an international foundation based in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. The local club has hosted fundraising events throughout the year to benefit Trampled Rose, an organization that promotes education for young girls in Ethiopia. Its founder, Becky Kiser is a native of Colorado Springs and member of the Rotary Club of East Colorado Springs. She moved to Ethiopia in 2005 to set up a foundation for girls after learning of the plight of young women in this east African country. Since that time, the organization has assisted over 6,499 girls to attend school and help eradicate obstetric fistula. Rotary International is a global network of volunteer leaders who come together in a mission to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. According to East Colorado Springs club President, Dave Lawyer, “The mission of Trampled Rose fit so well with our larger Rotary International goals and we wanted to support the selfless dedication and hard work of our own club member, Becky Kiser.” Trampled Rose’s mission is to help keep girls in school through housing, food, healthcare, school supplies, menstrual care supplies and uniforms (clothing). For tiny holes use some regular Ken Moon acrylic spackling — like you use on drywall to fill in nail holes. For bigger dents wood putty — sometimes called plastic wood--is a better choice. In either case, the patch can be lightly sanded after they dry. If your doors are stained in a natural wood color, it will be hard to match the color--so the spot will stand out. In that case it would be a good idea to switch to a painted surface. Scratch the door to degloss it, then apply a good primer like Bullseye 1-2-3, followed by a satin acrylic latex material. I know it’s a radical step to switch to painted doors, but in the long run your home will be brighter and appear more modern than its actual age. Dear Ken: What do you think of what they call back stab outlets? Are they OK? – Elba I’m not a fan of them. These are electrical outlets that are wired by simply pushing the stripped wire into a hole in the back. They are legal to use on the 15 amp circuits in the house — like the bedrooms and living room — but not in the 20 amp ones in the kitchen and laundry. Even so, I prefer the old-fashioned method of wrapping the wire around the screw on the side of the outlet. Why? It makes a better connection in terms of the surface area of contact, so it’s less likely to overheat or fail when you apply a big load, like a clothes iron or room heater. By the way, after about 25 years, often-used electrical outlets and switches start to loosen and need replacement. If cords easily slip out of the outlet slots easily and switches are getting jiggly, it’s time to start changing these devices one at a time. If you are uncomfortable around electricity, there are great how-to books available at the home centers. Remember to turn off the circuit you’re working on!

Dear Ken: I have 2 outside faucets that drip all the time. Are they fixed the same way as regular ones? – Andy Basically, yes. You’ll need a couple of pipe wrenches to take off the nut that holds the faucet together. It’s called a packing nut, and it’s just behind the faucet handle itself. You can then pull the long faucet stem out of the opening. On its end will be a traditional rubber washer just like any other faucet setup. If your house is older, you might want to replace the typical flat washer with a coneshaped one. That will ensure a better fit against the inside seat and so will be less prone to drips. Outside faucets are pretty inexpensive. So, an alternative here is to unscrew the whole assembly, buy a new and replace it. Simply apply some Teflon tape to the new threads, screw it back in, and you’re back in business. That’s not always an option, since some faucets are actually soldered into place; so check which style you have first by looking at the inside connection in the basement. Dear Ken: I’m getting a sewer gas smell after I do laundry. It seems to come from inside the washer. – Stan You didn’t say how old your house is. This problem is generally associated with pre-1970s homes. In those days, we plumbed the laundry drain with 1-1/2 inch pipe vs. today’s 2 inch. Modern washers with their strong pumps can overload those smaller pipes and force water out with such vigor that the trap (that keeps sewer gas away) is emptied. There are two answers here. One is to let the washing machine dump into a laundry sink that will then drain more uniformly and slowly--sort of like the retention ponds you see in new subdivisions to catch storm water. Another option is to reduce the opening of the washer hose itself. Use a hose clamp to secure a smaller-diameter piece of copper pipe in the end of the hose. Yes, that will increase the pressure a little, but it will also curtail the actual gallons-per-minute flow rate — and so it may not overwhelm your system. Finally, don’t overlook drain cleaning. 
