Dear Ken: Every winter we have a chilly basement when the furnace isn’t running. The heat from the sun keeps Ken Moon the thermostat warm, so the lower level doesn’t get heat. Is there a small gas unit we could use to heat the basement? – Jan There are several varieties of gas fireplace/stoves that would take the
chill off your lower level. They can be direct-vented, that is the flue pipe can go straight outdoors instead of through the roof. They may, however, be a little pricey for your needs. Some supplemental electric heat may be all you need. You can buy baseboard units that permanently screw to the wall for $70 or so. You need a 240-volt feed for them, so access to the breaker box is a must. They are a little expensive to run, but they are highly zoneable — that is they heat the area up quickly and are on only when you’re in the room. Sometimes you can relocate the
thermostat to a more sheltered part of the main level that isn’t affected by sunshine. It’s simply a matter of splicing some low voltage wire on to the existing loop and pulling it up through another wall. Try for a central location away from heat ducts, cooking, fireplaces and windows. Dear Ken: We have a ranch style home with a crawl space. The temperature in that space is as warm as the house. Is it worth the $300 to insulate the long heat dusts in there with reflective material . – Chad
Probably so, but don’t forget the recovery math we’ve done here from time to time. That is, how long will it take you to get your money back? You and a friend could probably do the insulating job for a lot less than $300. Buy some R-11 (3") fiberglass batts, peel off the paper facing, and wrap the ducts yourself. Use fine wire or metallic (not duct) tape to secure the material. Also, two other reminders: don’t forget the hot water pipes running through the crawl space. You can snap some of that split Styrofoam pipe wrap around them.
It comes in 4-foot lengths and is very inexpensive. Finally, have you checked on the exterior vents to this area? When cold weather comes, close all but one on the sunniest side of the house (but check first that you aren’t restricting required combustion air for the furnace or water heater).
