Yes it does. This probably reflects their aversion to the courthouse. If they weren’t specific, then their customers might stick any old battery — even non-alkaline varieties — in the detector. Then if it were to fail to alarm, they could be sued for damages to people or property. I’m partial to the Coppertop brand. They seem to do well for me longevity-wise in cameras and other devices. Good battery or not, they be should be changed once a year even if the detector doesn’t issue the low battery warning. If you have high-up smoke alarms
on, say, a vaulted ceiling, then check out the 10 year batteries. They are lithium, not alkaline, a little expensive — about $10 or so — but they are worth it in hard-to-access locales. Dear Ken: I have one of those old Federal Pacific electric panels. I don’t know what to do. One electrician says get rid of it, another says it’s OK for now. What do you think? – Al You’re probably OK to wait. If there are no signs of stress inside—like overheating, melting, charring, etc. — then this isn’t necessarily an emergency. These panels were popular from about the 1950s to the late ’80s, so there are millions of them still in place. They were poorly engineered, and there are reports that there have been some associated fires, since they might not trip under overloads. Thankfully, this is quite rare, but it can’t be
ignored. As you might guess, these panels have developed a particularly bad reputation among real estate agents, appraisers and home inspectors. Bottom line: It should eventually be replaced, especially if you plan on selling your home soon. It will cost about $1500, give or take. Typically, the procedure is to install a new electric panel on the outside of the house, directly behind the old one. But there is another alternative which can knock about a third off that price. It is a retrofit kit that simply replaces the “guts” of your old panel. One brand is Cutler Hammer, and your electrician may be able to track one down. They are hard to find, so be patient. Dear Ken: My son has mold in his attic. What can he do to seal it and prevent more buildup? – Dave The first thing is to add additional ventilation up there. My favorites
are gable vents. They sit in the wall at the end of the attic and provide great cross ventilation, which can carry moisture-laden air outdoors in no time. Most homes — especially newer ones — are a little underventialted these days. We have become so energy conscious that we have cut down on the size and number of exterior openings in both attics and crawl spaces. Now it’s typical to provide a few flat roof vents — with heavy snow screens on their undersides — high up on the shingles. These passive devices aren’t very efficient at letting heat and moisture escape. Moreover, for many years it was common to let the bathroom fans simply blow into the attic in the hope that this wet air would eventually migrate outside. That may be the case at your son’s housie. Those rules have changed, so it’s a requirement that they exhaust through there one opening directly outside. Wet attics can indeed lead to mold
deposition on the underside of the roof system — both the trusses and the plywood sheathing. If it is merely a darkening of the wood, then it can probably be left alone (remember that the air up there is technically not part of the indoor, breathable environment). If, on the other hand, there are significant areas of staining and dark patches of mold, the attic should be coated with an appropriate primer/sealant to encapsulate those parts. A mold remediation specialist can advise you more specifically. Finally, check the insulation; the loose, blown-in Fiberglass or cellulose material tends to subside in wet surroundings.
