Dear Ken: We fertilized the lawn about a month ago, but it didn’t seem to help. Should we try it again? Or is it too soon? – Barbara
I wonder if you used an ironcontaining product. Our alkaline soils around here lock up iron in a form that is not readily available as a nutrient for your lawn. Look for a product containing at least 3 percent soluble iron. And, no, it’s not too soon. I fertilize about once a month over the summer. It’s a good way to build up a deep and healthy root system that tolerates winter weather better. When you mow, do you bag and discard the clippings? That’s not a good idea, because they are composed of about three-fourths
water, plus they contain the same nutrients you have been adding. Let them lie on the lawn for extra feeding and heat protection. Dear Ken: I’d like to have a sink in my garage. Should I worry about it freezing up in cold weather? – Kevin Not really. Generally speaking you’re not allowed to install plumbing fixtures in areas subject to freezing. But the garage lies somewhere in between. I have had a deep, laundry-type, fiberglass sink in my garage for many years and have had no troubles at all. For the first winter it was in place, I monitored the temperature in there assiduously every time the outside temps went below freezing. Even on the coldest nights — like those below zero periods we get in February — the garage never got below 40 degrees.
So, yes, I would encourage you to add this useful fixture in your home. You’ll find it invaluable for rinsing out paint brushes, muddy shoes and boots, pet dishes, and golf clubs, for instance; the list is endless. The hard part of your installation will be finding a drain that is accessible to the garage wall and is in just the right spot to accept a downward-sloping pipe from the new sink. Normally, you would vent the trap underneath this sink up through the roof. But there are “atmospheric vents “available now —like the Studer brand — which allow you to simply vent the trap underneath the cabinet. In spite of the very remote chance of a freeze-up, it’s important to protect the hot and cold water pipes to this utility sink on the inside of the house. Install a valve on each line in the furnace room, say, that you can shut off if you are away from home during cold weather.
Dear Ken: I’m looking at getting a new piano. The trouble is, on the wall where I want to put it there is a cold air return next to the floor. I know you don’t like to block these off, so if I leave the piano an inch or two away, will I be OK? – Carolyn I’ve got a better idea. You’re right: free-flowing air in vital though these return air grilles to allow the furnace to do its job properly and efficiently; I’m afraid your piano will inhibit this flow. Your regular heating contractor can move this air source vertically in no time. They will cut a new grille directly above the existing one near the ceiling. Once they block off the old return, then air will be pulled down through the wall cavity and back through the furnace. If you think about it, this is a better effective way to heat and cool that room. Air — whether hot or cold —
which comes out of those floor vents will be drawn up through the room instead of across the floor, and so will keep you more comfortable. Dear Ken: We want to install an attic fan. Can you recommend someone? – Donna Start with your HVAC contractor — the company which checks your furnace each fall. If they don’t install attic fans, they will know of some reliable company they will refer you to. If you have no luck with them, one of my listeners had a good experience through www.atticfan.com.
