Snow and ice removal for the home and driveway BY STACI GIORDULLO  ANGIE’S LIST

While a fresh blanket of white snow is a beautiful sight, the inevitable task of removing it can become a back-breaker if not done properly. In addition, some snow removal techniques can damage your driveway, sidewalk and landscaping. To avoid making costly pavement repairs or replanting your flora this spring, scoop up these tips on removing ice and snow.

GET YOUR GEAR READY

When a weather event or emergency hits, you expect the snow blower, chain saw or generator equipment to start on command. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, which represents all the major outdoor power equipment manufacturers and suppliers, advises that equipment owners follow these steps regarding fuel to keep winter and emergency equipment ready to work: Consumers should consult their operator’s manual, which explains what fuels can be used to maintain a properly functioning product. Use of non-approved fuel in outdoor power equipment may negatively affect engine performance and longevity, permanently damage the engine and may void the manufacturer’s warranty. Select the correct fuel for the product from your local gas station, including the correct ethanol content. Do not use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol in outdoor power equipment, small engines and utility task vehicles. Drain the gasoline tank when the equipment will not be in use for more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without a fuel stabilizer) left in the fuel system will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CLEAR SNOW?

The best practices for removing snow depends on where you live and how much snow you’re dealing with, says Marsha Lake, owner of Lake’s Lawn & Landscape in Keego Harbor, Mich. “The biggest mistake homeowners make is waiting until

it snows before asking for our service,” she says. “By that time, our schedule is full.” Lake says her snow removal service includes plowing the driveway and shoveling the sidewalks, walkways and porch. Fees range from $25 to $50, depending on the size of the property. However, if you consider shoveling snow to be your winter-weather workout, there are some methods to make the task easier. “If high accumulations are expected, it’s much easier to remove smaller quantities of snow and then repeat the process rather than trying to remove large amounts all at once,” says Kathleen Trong, owner of The Asphalt Doctor in East Greenbush, N.Y. “If that’s not possible, then large amounts of snow should be removed in layers. Most importantly, snow should be removed

before it’s packed down by vehicles and foot traffic.” Trong says homeowners should never use ice picks on their driveways or sidewalks, as the damage can be detrimental to those surfaces. “Purchasing a snow blower is a very wise investment,” she says. “Even an inexpensive snow blower is better than shoveling and risking a back injury or heart attack.” Trong also recommends staking the driveway with markers before snow arrives. “Especially if removal is being done by someone who isn’t familiar with the landscape,” she says. Our experts also remind homeowners to be respectful of your neighbors when shoveling snow, and don’t pile snow on their property. “Don’t throw snow into the street — it creates a driving hazard and also

when the plows come through it will be pushed back in front of driveways and cars parked on the street,” Trong says.

DON’T KILL YOUR LANDSCAPE WITH ICE MELT

Over the years, several effective deicing products have been developed to eliminate slippery surfaces. However, some of them may end up damaging plants in the landscape, flooring in your house or harming pets. Here are the most common deicing options, and how they might affect you: Sodium chloride — While generally the least expensive deicing product, rock salt doesn’t work well in temperatures below 25 degrees and can leach into the soil, changing the chemical balance to toxic levels.

Calcium chloride — Works well at temperatures below zero and is considered less harmful to vegetation. But it can leave behind a slippery residue that can be harmful to carpet, tile, shoes and your pet’s feet. This product can be up to three times more expensive than rock salt, but you don’t need to use as much. Calcium magnesium acetate — Can cost 10 times more than rock salt, but it’s salt-free and biodegradable. It won’t harm the environment and is less corrosive to concrete than salt. Urea — Primarily used as a fertilizer, urea has a lower potential to damage vegetation compared to potassium chloride, but it still has the potential to burn your lawn, shrubs and other plants. It can also contaminate runoff water with nitrates in the spring. 

US home purchases rebound; 2015 had most sales in 9 years BY JOSH BOAK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON — U.S. home sales rebounded in December after new regulations had delayed the completion of purchases in November. And total sales in 2015 were the most in nine years. The National Association of Realtors said Friday, Jan. 22 that sales of existing homes climbed 14.7 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.46 million. Sales had previously plummeted as the industry adapted to new mortgage disclosure rules — a temporary downturn before delayed sales were finalized in December. “This is a great way to cap off 2015,” said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets. Last month's rebound concluded a year that produced the highest annual

sales total since 2006. Steady job growth and low mortgages drew more buyers into the market, causing both sales and prices to climb. Americans bought roughly 5.26 million homes in 2015, a 6.5 percent increase over 2014. The median sales price rose 6.8 percent to $222,400. The Realtors forecast that sales will stay flat in 2016 and that the median price will rise more than 4 percent. A price increase that big would compound a problem for many wouldbe buyers: A rising proportion of homes are unaffordable. Home values rose last year at more than twice the pace of pay. Despite greater demand, the housing market continues to recover slowly from

the bursting of the housing bubble more than eight years ago. Sales remain well below their peak of 7.08 million in 2005, when adjustable-rate mortgages with no money down and other risky loans fueled a buying frenzy that eventually fizzled and triggered the worst downturn since the Great Depression. More traditional buyers returned to the market last year as cash investors pulled back. But the number of listings shrank, giving those shopping for a home fewer options and causing prices to rise. The number of listings on the market fell 3.8 percent from a year ago. Many current homeowners are unable to sell their properties for enough of a profit to afford another home, causing them

to stay on the sidelines. With available homes in short supply, more would-be buyers are stuck renting. The share of homeowners has slipped to 63.7 percent from a high of 69.2 percent in 2004. Demand has continued even though sales dipped to an annual rate of 4.76 million in November. That decline resulted in large part from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s introduction of guidelines in October for informing homebuyers about interest rates and fees for their mortgages. Once lenders and buyers sorted through the changes to the paperwork, sales growth resumed. In December, sales surged in the Northeast, Midwest, South and the West, with the

Western states recording a dramatic 23.2 percent increase. Sales have been supported by a relatively healthy job market. Employers added a robust 2.7 million jobs last year as the unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent from 5.7 percent. Pay growth has been relatively tepid, but average hourly earnings have still improved 2.5 percent from a year ago to $25.24. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the average rate on a 30-year fixedrate mortgage declined to 3.81 percent this week from 3.92 percent a week earlier. The average rate has increased from its 3.63 percent average a year ago but remains well below its historic average of 6 percent. 

Picking out new dinnerware or buying fresh linens might seem like a purely aesthetic decision, but a string of studies suggest the way you style your home can have a subtle but powerful impact on your health. From the color of your plates to where you charge your phone, we chart the small tweaks you can make to turn your space in to a healthy home. Here are eight easy changes to make at home to boost your health and well-being. 1. DINE WITH COLORED DINNERWARE White chinaware might be the most common dining choice, but studies suggest it’s not the healthiest. Researchers at Cornell University Food and Brand Lab tested the link between plate color and serving size at a New York dinner party. Guests were given a red or white bowl and asked to serve themselves a tomato- or cream-based pasta. Diners who ate white cream pasta from a white plate served themselves 22 percent more than those who ate from a dish in a contrasting hue. Confused? It’s simple. Portions look smaller when they appear against a contrasting color. Something as easy as switching your crockery could have a huge impact on how much you eat, without you even noticing. 2. TURN DOWN THE THERMOSTAT AT NIGHT In the depths of winter, the thought of a warm, cozy bed can be what gets you through the day, but turning the thermostat down while you sleep can have a big impact on your metabolism. Experts from the National Institutes of Health found that sleeping in a cooler room can cause your body to burn more calories while you sleep. It might sound too good to be true, but changing your sheets to lightweight linen or turning down the thermostat could better your health overnight. 3. WASH YOUR LINENS WEEKLY We know dirty linens can be a hotbed for bacteria and dust mites, but how often should you wash them? Philip Tierno, a microbiologist and pathologist at the New York University School of Medicine, says you can only use bath towels a few times before bacteria breeds. “If you can dry it completely, no more than three times max,” he told Tech Insider. As for bed linen, a weekly hot water cycle is enough to rid sheets of dust mites. If you have allergies, wash your sheets at a minimum of 130 degrees Fahrenheit for a thorough clean. 4. ADD A MIRROR TO YOUR DINING ROOM If you’re styling a kitchen or dining room, consider this: Researchers at University of Central Florida have found that introducing a mirror to eating areas can influence you to make healthier choices. Students who ate indulgent food in a room with a mirror said they didn’t find it as delicious or satisfying. Researchers believe it’s because mirrors force us to view ourselves objectively. “A glance in the mirror tells people

more than just about their physical appearance,” said researcher Ata Jami in a statement. “(It) helps them to judge themselves and their behaviors in a same way that they judge others.” 5. CREATE A CHARGING STATION If your bedtime routine consists of browsing Pinterest on your tablet at night and checking your phone on first rise, we’ve got news for you: The light emitted from your devices is wreaking havoc with your internal clock. A Harvard Medical School study found that using your phone or tablet at night throws off your circadian rhythm, leading to a bad night’s sleep. Create a charging station outside your bedroom so your phone and tablet won’t interrupt your sleep pattern. If the thought of cellphone separation gives you nightmares, try an app like Twilight, which masks the blue light with a warm filter, allowing you to use the device at any hour. 6. DOWNSIZE BOWLS AND GLASSWARE This healthy lifestyle trick is as simple as it gets: Switching to smaller plates and bowls can seriously reduce the chances of overeating. A recent study found that halving your plate size can cause you to eat 30 percent less. What’s even better is study participants still reported feeling full because they weren’t actually aware their portions had changed. When it comes to glassware, science says tall, narrow glasses are best. Short, wide glasses give the illusion of containing less liquid, so you’re more likely to overpour. Improve air quality with houseplants.

7. ADD GREENERY The latest influx of indoor plant hangers and geometric pot stands are enough to entice us to add greenery to our homes, but according to NASA, houseplants are also a great way to improve air quality. Chrysanthemums were named the best at absorbing pollutants, making them ideal for those who suffer from allergies. Styling your home with greenery can also lead to a good night’s sleep. Since plants give off oxygen, placing them on a bedside table can be a great way to boost your well-being as you sleep. 8. BUILD A HOME PLAYLIST We turn to architects to craft buildings and interior designers to style spaces, but what about sound? Sound consultant Julian Treasure says it’s time for interior sound designers. “It’s about designing not appearance but experience, so that we have spaces that are fit for purpose, that improve our quality of life, our health, and well-being,” he said in a TED talk. Sound is especially important for those living in cities. Traffic noise and living under a flight path can have serious health side effects, including learning issues and even cardiac arrest. Use music as a destressor, and create a home playlist to relax your mind and drown out street noises after hours. 
