The 9th Annual All Colorado Beer Festival (ACBF) will take place November 7 at Mortgage Solutions Financial Expo Center, 3650 N. Nevada Avenue. For the ones slinging suds, that means a long day without a lot of financial return for the brewery.
Coming home with hardware certainly helps. Gold Camp Brewing Company’s head brewer Ben Wilder won a first-place ribbon for his Phoenix Phire Double IPA at the Manitou Heritage Brew Festival earlier this month. Wilder recognizes the business sense in going to beer festivals and enjoys the experience. “For one, it’s a good way to get your name out for a small brewery,” he said. “If something pans out, (attendees) tend to remember you. It’s good exposure.” Great Storm Brewing Company won’t be at ACBF, though the event is right in its backyard. Lynn Jacobs said the small operation she and her husband founded receives requests to appear at festivals on almost a weekly basis, but it can only afford to
attend occasionally, and usually the ones that pay for the beer. “It’s hard for us to give away free beer,” Jacobs said. “If we said yes to everyone, we would be in the poorhouse.” It’s a sticky situation for small breweries. They can’t afford to be constantly funneling money into festivals, but without spreading their brand name, it’s difficult to grow. Red Leg Brewing Company was there not so long ago. Now a mid-sized brewery by Colorado Springs standards, Red Leg has been trying to move its canned beers into nearby markets such as Pueblo. Brewery president and founder Todd Baldwin said they look at the location of the festival when deciding whether to attend.
“It’s important to ensure that the festival highlights the beer and the breweries, and the quality they provide,” Baldwin said. Other factors include how long the event has been going on and the charities they support, as well as intangibles. “Do they provide ice and folding tables? Do they provide food for our guys? Are they going to pay us for our time?” Baldwin said. Gold Camp and Red Leg, along with around 68 other breweries, will set up at the All Colorado Beer Festival for reasons economical, charitable and very simple. “I love talking about beer,” Wilder said. “I like meeting people and watching their reaction when they try beer for the first time. That alone is worth the price of admission.”

In Colorado, it’s easy to lose your Subaru in a parking lot and your beardy guy at a beer festival. But misplacing your companion is only one challenge-slash-foul you’ll likely encounter at a big brewfest with scores of breweries, hundreds of beers and thousands of demographically-aligned fellow fans. If you’ve fested before, you know what of we speak. With that in mind, we give you this brief risk overview and beer fest survival guide:
Maintenance and recovery Imagine playing “Where’s Waldo” during Waldo Waldo. These days, craft beer fests are awash in same, much of it bearded, and a pretzel lei doesn’t suffice for tracking and identification purposes in such environments. If you failed to request your companion don a bright T-shirt or top hat ahead of time, there’s still room for a backup plan. Before you get to it, designate a meeting spot — the Red Leg kiosk, for instance — in case you get separated. If that doesn’t float, you still might be able to rig something that will allow you to pick him from the crowd if either of you goes rogue. Say, a helium balloon affixed to the band of his underwear where it rides above the waistband of his jeans. If it doesn’t actively interfere with his drinking, odds are he’ll never notice.
How to put this tactfully: Beer can upset the body politic, especially when a body has imbibed scores of different artisanal styles loaded with bloat-inducing ingredients that include complex sugars and live yeasts, the fungi that swell bread dough. Darker beers, by nature, contain more of these ingredients, so if you’re aware of a sensitivity — and if you’re a craft beer drinker with a touchy tummy, you know it — the worst of it can be avoided by sticking to lagers and lighter beers. Moderation is key. Beano can help. There’s just so much to drink!?! With 70 brewers and more than 200 beers, the All Colorado Beer Festival is one of the state’s larger beer festivals and the largest held in Colorado Springs, said assistant director Randy Dipner. “Some people go to a beer fest thinking: ‘I’m going to get my money’s worth and taste every single beer in the place.’ If you just do the math, you can’t do it and you shouldn’t even be thinking that walking in,” said Dipner, who suggests honing tasting sessions by theme, focusing on stouts or barrel-aged beers, for instance. “And be sure to take a break. Spend some time doing something other than drinking beer.” Sip a soda or non-alcoholic kombucha tea while watching a live beer brewing demonstration. Eat something, make a joyful fool of yourself at the Oskar Blues silent disco, get a massage or find out a little more about the fest, which last year raised about $70,000 for area nonprofits. “Half of your ticket price is going to our charity beneficiaries.
