Legacy in campaign: 30 years
In 2024, the Southern Colorado chapter of the American Red Cross conducted a Disaster Action Team (DAT) training exercise simulating a large apartment fire. Just weeks later, a real fire broke out in a multi-family complex in Pueblo County, displacing over a dozen families. Thanks to the preparedness and coordination supported by the Empty Stocking Fund Disaster Relief grant, Red Cross volunteers were able to respond within hours. They set up emergency shelters, provided meals, and distributed comfort kits and blankets. The grant helped ensure that trained volunteers, supplies, and shelter resources were ready to go, turning a potential tragedy into a moment of community resilience.

Care and Share Food Bank’s mission is to ensure equitable, sustainable access to nutritious food and education by partnering with neighbors, communities, organizations, and supporters across Southern Colorado, grounded in the belief that no one should go hungry. Most of the food it distributes moves through a network of 289 partner agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, community organizations, and meal sites. Care and Share also operates several direct programs, such as the Children’s Nutrition Initiative, which provides healthy snacks and meals to children when school food is unavailable. Additional direct distribution efforts include Mobile Food Pantries that reach rural communities and urban food deserts, as well as Mobile Markets designed to mobilize quickly and serve areas with concentrated need.

Legacy in campaign: 26 years
Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) dollars provide essential general operating support that enables Catholic Charities of Central Colorado to serve the community’s most vulnerable individuals and families with dignity and respect, regardless of the challenges they face. This flexible funding sustains and strengthens more than 70 programs assisting neighbors experiencing poverty, homelessness, or other forms of instability, including nutrition services such as a daily meal and a shopping-style food pantry; coaching and case management; emergency services like utility or transportation assistance; medical and behavioral health services; and education programs ranging from parent and early childhood education to adult life skills such as financial literacy. From addressing immediate crises to offering long-term support, ESF funding ensures the organization can direct resources where they are needed most and continue delivering compassionate, effective care across all programs.

Legacy in campaign: 12 years
With support from the Empty Stocking Fund, CPCD served more than 1,300 children in its early childhood education programs, including 232 at-risk infants, toddlers, and prenatal women through Early Head Start, which prioritizes families living in poverty or experiencing homelessness or foster care; 688 at-risk children ages three to five through Head Start, which follows the same eligibility criteria; and 210 four-year-olds through the Colorado Universal Preschool Program, with CPCD primarily serving low-income and disadvantaged families. In addition to early education, CPCD provides and coordinates a broad range of services such as medical, dental, and behavioral health care; therapy for children with special needs; nutritious snacks and meals; nutrition education for children and families; and extensive family support services, including home visits and career-skills training.

Empty Stocking Fund dollars support Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains’ (LFSRM) KPC Resource Center, foster care program, and refugee resettlement services equally. The KPC Resource Center offers free temporary crisis and planned childcare for infants and young children, along with family support and referrals, serving about 35 families each month and providing an average of 775 hours of respite care. LFSRM’s Foster Care program partners closely with families to provide stable, attentive homes for children who cannot live with their birth families; foster youth placed through LFSRM in Colorado Springs experience just 1.39 moves per 1,000 nights of care, far below the state average. As the only refugee resettlement agency in Colorado Springs, LFSRM welcomes individuals fleeing violence and persecution, offering housing, employment support, English learning, and cultural orientation; in the past year, it served 1,060 newcomers, primarily from Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Legacy in campaign: 32 years
Mercy’s Gate has supported the working poor and individuals on fixed incomes in El Paso County since 1982, operating with a mission to offer relief, the hope of the Gospel, and a vision for restoration to people in crisis. Grounded in compassion, love, and respect, the organization recognizes how difficult it can be for hard working neighbors to ask for help and strives to meet them without judgment or shame. Mercy’s Gate provides financial assistance for housing, utilities, medical care, food, household goods, clothing, transportation, and seasonal needs. Its approach extends beyond immediate relief by empowering neighbors to pursue long-term financial, physical, emotional, spiritual, relational, educational, and occupational stability.

Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) dollars support Mt. Carmel’s holistic wraparound model, strengthening all three core programs: Military, Veterans and Family Services (MVFS), Transition & Employment, and Behavioral Health and Wellness. These flexible funds fill gaps left by restricted grants, enabling rapid response to urgent needs of veterans, service members, and military families in the Pikes Peak region. In MVFS, ESF support helps provide housing and utility assistance, emergency transportation, and essential items like food and hygiene supplies. In Transition & Employment, the funding removes practical barriers to work by covering costs for uniforms, tools, and training. In Behavioral Health and Wellness, ESF dollars enhance trauma informed care, peer support, and access to services through retreats, wellness events, and transportation. ESF also sustains community efforts such as the El Paso County Homeless Veterans Stand Down. Overall, these funds allow Mt. Carmel to respond with dignity and care during moments of crisis.

Empty Stocking Fund dollars support NAMI’s full slate of programs, which emphasize that mental health disorders are biologically based, treatable and common, affecting 1 in 5 people every year.
Drawing upon the skills and lived experience of more than 140 volunteers, NAMI organizes its programming under three banners: programs for people living with mental health conditions; programs for family members and loved ones of those living with mental health conditions; and educational programs for the larger community. All are led by trained individuals who bring their own lived experience with mental health issues. Recognizing that cost, capacity and complexity discourage thousands of community members from securing mental health support, NAMI prioritizes accessibility. No one ever pays for or needs insurance to participate in one of NAMI’s classes or support groups.

Program assists participants in pursuing living wage employment. Children’s Services offers free on site childcare during classes and appointments, with referrals provided as needed. Housing Navigation includes individualized support to understand landlord expectations and identify appropriate housing options based on budget, eligibility, and needs. Two donation centers further support families by providing food, furniture, hygiene items, and other essentials.

Peak Vista Community Health Center’s philosophy requires uninsured patients to pay what they can on a sliding fee scale, yet no one is denied care due to an inability to pay. Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) contributions support the Compassionate Care Fund, which assists the organization’s most vulnerable patients, including those experiencing poverty, homelessness, mental health challenges, disability, unemployment, or lack of insurance or transportation. Established in 1998, the Compassionate Care Fund reduces financial barriers that prevent patients from accessing specialty consultations, procedures, diagnostics, and other medically necessary treatments across medical, dental, and behavioral health care. ESF dollars are deployed for urgent needs where lack of care could lead to critical outcomes, and while individual costs may appear small, they can be overwhelming for patients with limited resources. Many providers further extend this support by reducing fees whenever possible.

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care’s core programs include Hospice Care, Palliative Care Services, Pediatric Pathways, the Center for Grief and Loss, and Complementary Therapies. Hospice Care provides a coordinated blend of physical, emotional, and spiritual support for individuals with terminal illnesses and their families.

Services are offered wherever a patient lives, from private homes and assisted living facilities to nursing centers or, when necessary, the organization’s state of the art inpatient unit. Palliative Care Services support people with serious or life limiting illnesses by treating discomfort, stress, and symptoms at any stage of diagnosis. Delivered by a team of medical and social work professionals, palliative care provides an additional layer of support that helps patients remain at home longer, avoid hospitalizations, and experience an improved quality of life.

Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) dollars are essential to supporting a wide range of programs at The Salvation Army Colorado Springs Corps, one of the largest corps in the Intermountain Division. These flexible funds help sustain after school and summer day camp programs that serve 35–50 children each year, providing a safe and enriching environment. They also strengthen the Colorado Café, which addresses food insecurity and social isolation by offering affordable meals to seniors in the adjacent Silvercrest retirement home, to veterans and their families in VA Grant and Per Diem transitional housing, and to community members in need. In 2024, the Café served more than 300,000 meals and snacks across El Paso County. ESF support additionally bolsters the Food Pantry, open twice weekly, which serves hundreds of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and distributed 60,000 food bags—an average of 600 per week—over the past year.

In 2024, a total of 497 seniors received 39,221 delivered meals prepared by Silver Key’s chef. The Food Pantry allows seniors to pick up food monthly and request emergency provisions twice a year, with no one turned away in times of need. Through this pantry, 2,757 seniors received 15,512 boxes of commodities, along with access to milk, meat, produce, pet food, and other items.

Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) support strengthens the YMCA’s youth development programs, including the Middle School Initiative in Fountain Valley, scholarships for foster families, and services for military youth. The YMCA believes all youth deserve safe, supervised spaces that promote growth and healthy choices, and this flexible support helps the organization meet the greatest needs. Through its partnership with D 8, the Middle School Initiative provides a structured, mentored environment for students before school; 97 youth participated each morning and received free YMCA memberships. ESF support also expanded access for foster families, offering memberships, swim lessons, childcare, and youth sports.
With support from the Empty Stocking Fund, Catholic Charities has continued to deliver on our vision of transforming lives through relationships that build resiliency and thriving communities. We simply could not do our work without the community’s support. Since 1999, the Empty Stocking Fund has helped Catholic Charities serve hot, nutritious meals, provide free groceries, and medical services at our Marian House Campus; provide families and individuals with case management, housing, baby needs, counseling and therapeutic services at our Hunt Family Campus; educate thousands of children through literacy classes, provide a legal path to citizenship for immigrants, help people increase computer skills, and so much more. We are a proud partner and truly grateful to be part of such an amazing community effort.
