PIKES PEAK JAZZ AND SWING SOCIETY
The Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society (PPJASS) is the local window into the jazz world. Its monthly newsletter, Pikes Peak Jass Notes and weekly email blast, PPJASS eNotes, provide information on local jazz events and programs, Colorado Springs-area clubs featuring jazz and other news of interest to the jazz lover. Each month, PPJASS hosts the Second Sunday Jazz Affairs, featuring a variety of music, jamming and dancing. Special events and concerts featuring nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians are also scheduled regularly. PPJASS awards the $2,000 Danny Stevenson Memorial Scholarship annually to a local high-school student planning to continue jazz studies in college, encouraging outstanding student musicians to pursue their talents throughout life. Professional musicians are recognized by the Alice Award, given annually to an individual who exhibits a high degree of musical talent

THE NOSTALGICS
The Nostalgics is southern Colorado’s premier doo-wop/oldies band. Performing your favorite hits by The Marcells, The Platters, Dion, Danny and the Juniors, Bill Haley, Del Shannon, the band even plays the sounds from the British Invasion of the late ’50s through ’60s. The Nostalgics are available for most types of engagements, from weddings and parties, to night club shows and outdoor concerts. Doo-Wop is a distinctly American musical genre that flourished in the 1950s and early 1960s before the British Invasion, when British bands like The Beatles landed in the U.S. and turned the pop music world topsy-turvy overnight. The groups featured three- and four-part harmonies with strong bass vocal lines and lead vocals that frequently reached falsetto ranges. They were characterized by nonsensical syllables like “doobie-do-ah,” and “shoo-vap shoo-vah.” It was a time that had a lasting effect on pop music; these songs have entertained several generations! The 32nd Annual Gazette-El Pomar Foundation Empty Stocking Fund kicks off on Thanksgiving Day, with the goal of raising $1 million by January 15, 2016. The 2014 – 2015 campaign exceeded its goal to raise $1 million in the 2014 – 2015 campaign by raising $1,163,087.12. The Empty Stocking Fund provides resources for 20 local health and human service agencies in the Pikes Peak region on the front lines of helping people in crisis and assisting others in attaining self-sufficiency. Over the past 31 years, the Fund has raised more than $15.9 million. Thanks to contributions from The Gazette, El Pomar Foundation, Wells Fargo, ADD STAFF and Anschutz Foundation, 100 percent of the funds raised go directly to agencies to support those in need. Donations to the Empty Stocking Fund transform lives. Every dollar donated to the Empty Stocking Fund grows up to 45.3 percent through matching funds: the Bruni Foundation
