Downtown What IF Festival to spark Springs innovation, collaboration BY DEBORAH THORNTON Imagination Celebration

Prepare yourself for a party with endless possibilities! From 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on September 19, the What IF Festival of Innovation and Imagination, produced by Imagination Celebration, will fill six city blocks in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs with more than 100 interactive experiences for people of all ages and abilities. Attendees can enjoy four stages of live music, theater, and dance, a botanical beer and wine garden, local food, robotics, science, engineering, gardening, and entrepreneurs presenting on an array of individual and corporate projects. An economic development study of the Pikes Peak region concluded the area’s biggest obstacle for a healthy economic climate is a lack of collaboration. Nonprofits launch behavioral health program for seniors BY EMMA SCHIESTL

Innovations in Aging Collaborative

On September 1, The Innovations in Aging Collaborative (IIAC) combined forces with Silver Key and the UCCS Aging Center to launch Senior Reach, a senior advocacy program that seeks to increase well-being and quality of life for seniors in the Pikes Peak region. Originating in Jefferson County, Senior Reach convenes community members and health service providers to address behavioral health and cognitive issues that affect seniors as they age. This is done in a three-tier approach throughout the community: first, local community members are trained as Community Partners, or individuals who can recognize the warning signs of a senior who might need support. These warning signs include confusion or disorientation, a sudden change in appearance, or emotional distress or change, such as expressing the loss of hope. Community Partners can be anyone from a neighbor or close friend, to a hairstylist or a grocer who has regular interactions with older adults. I was looking for help wherever I could.” One of those calls finally came, and Roy was able to get back on his feet, but are many are still waiting for a call. Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado is working to reach the more than 171,000 people in need of food in southern Colorado. One in four of our children is at risk of missing at least one meal every day. While Care and Share’s reach is wide, only

108,000 of those in need currently have access to the food they need. In 2014, Care and Share announced an ambitious plan to provide access to food for all in need throughout southern Colorado. To help reach the goals outlined in Within Reach, Kaiser Permanente and the Lyda Hill Foundation are partnering with Care and Share. $50,000 grant to help Care and Share store, distribute foods BY SHANNON COKER

Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to fund retail infrastructure that will ultimately help secure and distribute more nutritious food for families in need. The grant will support investments in the equipment necessary to handle perishable products including refrigerated vehicles, coolers and freezers for transporting, storing and distributing food, thermometers and temperature calibration devices, among other items. Every year, Care and Share distributes more than 19 million pounds of food throughout 31 counties in southern Colorado to more than 300 partner agencies. Since 2009, the Walmart Foundation has invested in more than 170 refrigerated vehicles so that Feeding America member food banks and their partner agencies can get more

food to people struggling with hunger. This year, the Walmart Foundation expanded the scope of the grant to offer a broader variety of equipment options that will meet the needs of more food banks and agencies. “The Walmart Foundation has been a tremendous partner in helping us design strategies that help us serve more people with nutritious food,” said Lynne Telford, president and CEO of Care and Share. “This grant will go a long way in helping Care and Share expand our capacity to serve the children and families in southern Colorado.”

Volunteer profile: Jim Mariner, El Paso County Parks Nature Centers BY PAULA MEGORDEN

“You gotta do it, Grandpa.” Jim Mariner’s 8-year-old granddaughter had been lobbying him for some time to volunteer for El Paso County’s Bear Creek and Fountain Creek Nature Centers. Her parents had made sure she and her siblings were involved in programs offered at the nature centers, so she had a connection to the beautiful wetlands, creeks and meadows of these pristine areas. As a retired biology teacher, Jim had to admit it seemed to be a natural fit for him, and who can resist a granddaughter’s pleas? Through his mentorship and leadership, Jim is an integral part of the volunteer corps for El Paso County’s award-winning nature centers. Becoming a Volunteer Interpretive Specialist has helped him continue his life’s ambition to become a professional student. His work provides him ample opportunities to learn from both nature and the children who arrive by the busload to tour the centers. Jim’s knowledge and enthusiasm – infused with a sense of humor – helps him connect with visitors of all ages. He provides natural and cultural history interpretation, visitor information and environmental education programs. He invites visitors to discover, learn and reju-

venate as they walk along a nature center trail, watch a Great Blue Heron catch a fish, or see a Monarch butterfly emerge from its chrysalis. After eight years as a volunteer and countless memories and experiences, one day in particular still stands out to Jim. He was hiking with a group of fifth graders at Fountain Creek Nature Center: “We had stopped at the waterfall to talk about the water cycle,” he recalled. “Just as we were leaving, a fox emerged from the brush on the far side of the creek, and we quietly watched it for several minutes while it preened and foraged for food under an old log. Afterwards, as we neared the end of our hike, one of the lads in the class came alongside me and slipped his hand into mine.” They walked on silently for a short way, and then the young man said, “This has been the best day of my life!” Thanks to Jim for making great days, best days.

Catering with a cause: AspenPointe snags two awards on intl. stage BY BRIAN TOON AspenPointe

AspenPointe Catering was the Runner-Up 2015 International Catering Association Caterer of the Year and Catersource ACE Award 2015 Caterer of the Year, the top two catering awards in the world. Caterers from 43 countries attended the Las Vegas Catersouce and Event Solutions Convention & Tradeshow this year, where 15 international judges picked the best entries from New York City, Hollywood, Miami, Singapore, Calgary, Toronto, and other cities known to cater celebrities and heads of state. Past entrants include Walt Disney Swan Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood and Catering by Design, exclusive caterer to the Denver Broncos for 20 years. Competition was fierce, and Colorado Springs nonprofit AspenPointe finished second to a Johannesburg, South Africa, company that has catered Prince Harry, Nelson Mandela, Celine Dion, Elton John and the 2011 FIFA World Cup.

Caterers were judged on presentation, innovative food ideas, business practices and marketing. Entries were also judged on sustainability, industry support and charitable support. This is where AspenPointe stood out from the competition. While AspenPointe prides itself on providing delicious, fresh food at reasonable prices, 100 percent of proceeds are invested back into its business to help train disadvantaged and disabled individuals. The AspenPointe Café is internationally acclaimed for a 16-week culinary training program. Job placements for graduates include restaurants, cafes, hotels, assisted-living facilities, universities, casinos, high schools and food trucks. In fiscal year 15, AspenPointe trained 152 disabled and disadvantaged students, training more students annually than any other of the 67 Catalyst Kitchens nonprofit WITH and members in the U.S., Canada U.K., save founding member FareStart in Seattle.

AspenPointe chose to provide job training to the hospitality industry because food service jobs have 13-percent job growth nationally. According to the National Restaurant Association, one out of three adults found their first job in the restaurant industry; 90 percent of AspenPointe graduates are placed in jobs. The delicious, affordable and elegant AspenPointe catering options are often far less expensive than other local caterers. It averages $23 per wedding guest versus the national average of $66 per guest. AspenPointe caterers about 50,000 guests each year.

Philanthropy transforms quality of life in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region, something Mary Shipsey Gunn knows quite well. Gunn will keynote Partners in Philanthropy from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on October 7 at The Broadmoor Hotel, as the community gathers to recognize philanthropy’s impact this past year. Gunn, the former executive director of the David and Lucille Packard Foundation in Pueblo, will offer reflections on her 20 years in Colorado as well as her progressive work as the new director of philanthropy at the Monterrey Peninsula Foundation in California. Hosted by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE), the event also features awards in multiple categories of giving. While businesses and investors may look for a direct return on investment, charitable gifts

from philanthropically minded organizations and individuals are often measured by a social return on investment, and Partners in Philanthropy celebrates these self-less gifts. CNE invites the community to attend and recognize honorees in individual, corporate, and grant-making categories for their work. In past years, the event has recognized how philanthropy has achieved such local landmarks as The Garden of the Gods Visitors Center and the innovative Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences at UCCS. Last year’s event introduced two new awards for NextGen and Multi-Generational philanthropy in addition to awards for outstanding individual, corporate (both large and small business), foundation, and campaign volunteer. Attendees learn how charitable gifts in our region create the dynamic environment citizens enjoy.

Springs caregiver receives gift of sight BY SANDY BEERS

Izetta is a Colorado resident who has been graciously taking care of her two grandchildren while juggling two jobs to pay the bills. Last year, she noticed her vision had deteriorated substantially and she was unable to perform many tasks she was able to previously. She didn’t realize it yet, but Izetta had developed cataracts in both eyes, and they had progressed to the point where her vision couldn’t be fixed with anything but surgery. Since she worked two jobs to feed her family, this also meant her annual income put her just above the limit to qualify for Medicaid. She made too much, and yet, made too little to afford surgery. If she couldn’t afford surgery, what would happen to her grandchildren when she couldn’t see to do her work anymore? She felt stuck, unsure what would become of her family.

Then, Izetta heard about EverythingForSight.org, a nonprofit founded by local ophthalmologist James Barad, MD, to fund eye care for those who need it most. In 2013, the organization partnered with Pinnacle Eye Center, where the majority of EverythingForSight. org-sponsored medical and surgical care is performed. With the help of generous volunteers, Every-

thingForSight.org has been able to preserve and restore vision to thousands of patients. After the EverythingForSight.org team members presented her with options for treating her cataracts, Izetta was hopeful for her future. After hearing her story and ascertaining her income, they took the necessary steps to request a small investment toward her care. Every-

thingForSight.org covered the direct cost of surgery for not just one of Izetta’s eyes, but both. Izetta was overcome with gratitude, thankful someone cared about her so much. She underwent her second cataract surgery in July is now able to not only continue caring for her grandchildren, but to see and enjoy life in a way she has not been able to for a long time.

If you’ve enjoyed the improved Red Rock Canyon Open Space this summer, thank a Rocky Mountain Field Institute (RMFI) volunteer. The record May rainfall caused severe damages to the popular Red Rock trail system. A dam breach, followed by flooding and erosion, created safety hazards significant enough for the City of Colorado Springs to close the park to the public, a closure that remained in place from mid-May through early July. Heavy machinery was brought in to repair and stabilize trail areas that posed an immediate safety threat. The open space couldn’t open without hand crews to complete additional, detail-oriented projects, including trail construction, maintenance and restoration. Fortunately, community volunteers heard the call to action and stepped up to assist with the ongoing restoration of the trails and surrounding areas of the beloved park. In July, nearly 100 volunteers con-

tributed more than 400 collective hours to projects led by RMFI, the Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Manitou Trail CATS. Projects included trail improvements to the Round Up, Quarry Pass, and Sand Canyon Trails, as well as creek channel stabilization and drainage of a pond of standing water within the Quarry.

RMFI is a Colorado Springs-based nonprofit that promotes conservation and stewardship of public lands in southern Colorado through volunteer-based trail and restoration projects, environmental education, and restoration research. RMFI generally hosts the vast majority of its community volunteer stewardship workdays during the spring and fall, taking the hottest, mid-summer months to work with multi-week crews in Colorado’s high country. However, as with response to the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest Fires of 2012 and 2013, eager volunteers, generous donations, and solid partnerships with other involved organizations once again enabled RMFI to step in to lend a hand. To date, RMFI has led a dozen volunteer workdays in Red Rocks and has several more planned in the park through spring 2016.

More than 80 of the event’s 100 tables had been filled as of the mid-August press time for this article. “We expect to sell several more tables by the time this article is published,” said April Speake, THFC executive director. “I encourage anyone who’s considering attending to buy your tickets quickly, before we sell out.” The 11th annual dinner is the year’s largest fundraiser for the Springs-based nonprofit, which provides emergency grants for Colorado veterans and military families to pay essential life expenses like rent and utilities. Past dinner speakers have included

best-selling author Lee Woodruff and Gen. David Petraeus. A cocktail reception starts at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner program begins at 6:30. This year’s dinner sponsors include the Gazette, All Colorado Beer Festival, El Pomar Foundation, HuHot Mongolian Grill, Kuni Lexus, Larry H. Since 2003, The Home Front Cares has raised more than $7.6 million to aid Colorado veterans and military families. Today, 98 percent of The Home Front Cares’ clients are veterans, already separated from the service.
