Message from the CEO
Reviewing the first half of 2018
As we begin the summer, it is a good time to look back at the first half of 2018. This year has been filled with numerous opportunities and significant accomplishments on behalf of our members, Q5 investors, and the community at-large. We hosted several can’t miss, major events and professional development opportunities: The Annual Gala, The State of the City Luncheon, Business Blast, the John Maxwell Live2Lead Leadership Development event, and our recent Cybersecurity Seminar. Each provided significant community engagement and information, expanded business opportunities, venues for professional development, and opportunities to make strategic connections and build your network. The first half of 2018 has also served as a time of transition as we have worked alongside many community leaders and investors to support the creation of the Land of Lincoln Economic Development Corporation (EDC), while at the same time wrapping up the work of our Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5). The creation of the new EDC, with the singular focus of advancing economic development, provides a significant opportunity to move our region forward, and The Chamber will continue to support the work of the EDC in whatever ways possible. Change and transition always provide significant opportunities and this transition is no different. It has provided an opportunity for greater focus on, and to direct more resources to, our Four Core Functions: • Increased business advocacy as the voice OF and FOR business in our region. • Providing member businesses with resources, support and assistance. • Facilitating leadership and professional development opportunities. • Providing opportunities for visibility and strategic connections. We have made significant advancements and investments in all four core functions, but none more than our increased business advocacy efforts. As the voice OF and FOR business, we have done significant work on pro-business, pro-growth policies, while at the same time opposing those that are not. Visit our new Advocacy webpage to see our policy agenda and regular updates. As you can see, the first half of 2018 has been significant for our members, investors, and our community. I am sure the remainder of the year will be just as significant. New advocacy section added to Chamber website One of The Chamber’s four core functions is our role as the leading voice OF and FOR business, as one of THE organizations that will stand in the gap to influence pro-business, pro-growth policies and procedures, while opposing those that are not. At the beginning of 2018, we promised to track local, state, and federal legislation and inform you, our members, of how it may impact your business, organization, and our community. We promised to inform and guide you when action is needed, and to provide the necessary information and most effective ways to take such action. We’ve done all of the above and more, significantly increasing our business advocacy efforts since late last year. As a part of our work, we have a new Advocacy page on our website. The page includes several important items, including our 2018 Policy Agenda (officially adopted by our Board of Directors), an up-to-date listing of recent Chamber advocacy efforts, and an Elected Officials link. Why is this webpage important? As the voice OF and FOR business, this page provides you with a clear picture, through our Policy Agenda, of how we are representing you on important issues like Development Policy, the State Budget and Finances, Minimum Wage, Redistricting Reform, Healthcare, and Tax Reform, just to mention a few items.

Leadership Springfield graduates 32nd Class Over the past 32 years, more than 880 participants have completed the Leadership Springfield program. Last month, the 32nd class graduated from the program. Habeeb Habeeb, motivational speaker and CEO and Principal of BPC, was the keynote speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony. He spoke to the graduates about how adversity shapes us as leaders and how a title or position doesn’t necessarily make a person a leader. The 13th Annual Distinguished Alumni Award was presented at the graduation ceremony. This award is given to an alumnus or alumnae of the program whose achievements in business and community reveal prominent leadership skills. The individual’s leadership must result in significant contributions to his or her place of employment or to the Springfield community. This year’s award was presented to John Stremsterfer, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln and a graduate from the Class of 2003.

Class of 2019 applications due June 30 This fall, Leadership Springfield will feature a new condensed schedule. The schedule will include a 14-week series of half day programs during which participants will gain leadership skills and in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area. During the program, participants interact with community 4
leaders and decision makers who share diverse perspectives on significant accomplishments and opportunities within the Springfield community. Interactive professional development is a cornerstone of Leadership Springfield.

Register today for Greater Springfield Chamber Job Fair The Greater Springfield Chamber Job Fair will be held on Tuesday, August 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Presenting Sponsor of the Fair is Lincoln Land Community College. Company representatives are continually impressed with the professionalism and the high quality
job seekers that attend. An average of 500 job seekers traditionally attend the Fair, allowing companies the opportunity to screen many individuals in a short period of time. Companies frequently report high satisfaction with their results from the job fair events, including strengthening their talent pool and/or hiring new employees.

Seminar provided on cybersecurity The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce held a Cybersecurity Seminar on May 2 to help make local businesses aware of the ever-increasing threats of cyberattacks. The vulnerability of small businesses to a cyberattack is increasing due to the fact that most don’t have a plan in place to protect themselves. The amount of damage caused by individual attacks is climbing into the multimillions. The chances of a company falling victim to an attack continues to rise. Businesses of all sizes need to more effectively manage the ongoing risks.
PNC and Levi, Ray & Shoup were premier sponsors of the event. Trevor Buxton, Fraud Communications Manager with PNC, presented an overview of cybersecurity threats. Greg Hetrick, Security Solutions Technical Advisor & Penetration Testing Lead for LRS, presented information on how to protect your business from an attack. Heyl Royster was the partner sponsor of the event, and Attorney Mike Kokal provided an overview of the legal landscape and what to do in the event of an attack. Additional support for the event was provided by HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

Hembrough participates in Chamber Day As a part of our advocacy efforts, Chamber President and CEO Chris Hembrough represented our members and the local business community at Chamber Day, an advocacy event hosted by The Illinois Chamber of Commerce and The Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. Pro-business advocates from across the state gathered in Springfield on April 11 for legislative updates on critical issues regarding the business climate, the regulatory environment, and the state of our State. The day included updates and advocacy efforts on numerous bills in the following categories: Business Regulation, Infrastructure, Employment Law, Financial Services, Technology, Energy and Environment, Healthcare, and Taxes. HEALTHCARE, FINANCIAL PLANNING & SENIOR CARE Components of a reliable retirement roadmap As with most people when it comes to retirement planning, you are overwhelmed at the prospect of gathering enough money to retire without having to worry about finances. Some solutions to this challenge we all eventually face are obvious, while others are less so. We would like to highlight three primary components of a reliable retirement roadmap (a GPS of sorts) that are vital to getting you where you want to be: accumulation, portfolio management and investor behavior. Accumulation… This is the easiest of the three topics. You must fund investments now for your future retirement (no one else will). A general rule of thumb is to save ten percent of your earnings; however, this varies widely based on how much you want to spend in retirement. The real answer is to save as much as you can without adversely affecting your current lifestyle. (You want to enjoy life along the way!) Make sure you are contributing what is necessary to get the maximum match from your employer’s 401k plan. After that, a Roth IRA is a very good way to accumulate tax free retirement dollars. Roth plans, which are also available in many 401ks, do not give current year tax deductions, but they grow tax free.
Anyone under the age of 50 has significant time for Roth investments to grow. A couple more accumulation tips: Start contributing monthly now. Do not put it off, even if you think it is a small amount. If you get annual pay raises, use those increases as additional contributions to your retirement savings. Finally, it is a good idea to save monthly into a non-retirement account. This money will be accessible in case of an emergency, whereas, withdrawals from retirement plans usually result in penalties. Portfolio Management… For long-term retirement saving, we suggest investing in a diversified portfolio of equities. Equities is another term for the stock market. The stock market is often misunderstood. A stock represent ownership in a company. Therefore, a portfolio of equities is just owning small pieces of whole bunch of companies. By owning a diverse group of companies, you benefit from their profits, dividends, and ultimate success of their management team. These companies and their management constantly work to make money, whether we are in a recession or a boom economy. The best way to own equities, in our view, is through mutual funds. Choosing
funds based on consistent adherence to an investment philosophy tends to be better than basing choices on past performance or rating systems. Investor Behavior… Oddly enough, this is the hardest thing for investors to control, which is a big reason why many prefer to use a financial advisor. In our view, the single greatest deterrent to successful investing is improper behavior by clients/investors. Oftentimes they believe the market can be timed successfully. It cannot be. Based on analysis done by J.P. Morgan and others, the S&P 500 (which is the top 500 stocks in the U.S.) have fluctuated about fourteen percent from low point to high point on average each year over the last 38 years. So, successfully timing this year after year does not seem to be possible. In addition, trying to pick individual stocks, sectors, or hot mutual fund managers are among the many reasons for a bad investment experience. The financial media wants you to think these things are possible… even easy. To us, however, they are just major road blocks to a successful retirement. Battling the opioid addiction in our community Opioid addiction is one of the most prevalent and impactful health issues facing American families today, with more than 2 million Americans now addicted to some kind of opioid. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 64,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2016. That’s an average of 115 opioid overdose deaths each day. Overdoses from heroin and fentanyl, in particular, have claimed more American lives in 2017 than were lost in the entire Vietnam War. Unlike other drugs (i.e. meth), opioid addiction is common among people of all backgrounds, genders, ages, and professions. Everyone, from doctors, lawyers, coal miners, students, to hospitality workers, is equally at risk. Specific help is available for licensed professionals in diversion programs which allow them to continue to practice under supervision. Addiction Heroin and prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine and fentanyl, all fall into the class of drugs called opioids. Not everyone who uses an opioid is an addict. Scientific research is now proving “addiction as a chronic, relapsing brain disease, involving compulsive drug use”; indicating that some people have a genetic predisposition to addiction. Addicts spend all their time chasing the ‘high’ they got the first time they used drugs. They take increasing amounts as they try to recreate that first ‘high’. CHAMBERUPDATE |

How do people become addicted to opioids? Self-medication - People with mental illnesses often use opioids to make them feel “better”. For example, someone who has depression and needs psychiatric help may take a prescribed opioid or something purchased on the street to make them feel good rather than going to a physician. They do not realize that it is only a temporary fix. Prescription pain medication – Those people genetically predisposed to addiction they can become addicted with the first prescription. They will keep asking their physician for more medication even though the pain is gone.
Recovery There are different approaches to detoxification and recovery. Withdrawal and cravings are part of the natural process of recovery. The brain needs time to heal from the effects of the drug and alcohol. Medications that decrease the intensity of these symptoms like Suboxone, Methodone, Subutex and Naltraxone greatly increase the odds of a complete recovery. These medications are generally non-addicting and have a lower potential for abuse. However, medication alone is not the perfect solution. The best way to treat addiction is to treat the whole person from a bio-psycho-social perspective.
Medications first control the withdrawal and then the cravings. Psychological - The psychological aspect is a large component of overall recovery. Access to both group and individual therapy with a professional who has a good understanding and background in addiction is essential. Social - Addicts spend most of their time and energy in acquiring drugs that they destroy their support system by lying, cheating and stealing from their relatives and friends. These relationships need to be rebuilt, as strong support from the family and friends is a vital part of putting their life back together again. They need to find employment and hobbies to regain structure in their lives, as well as emotional and financial stability. Over my 40 years in practice, I have seen many patients with psychiatric conditions and substance use disorder. While the number of Americans impacted by opioid addiction is in fact quite staggering, I have seen the bio-psychosocial approach work wonders for those ready to face their addiction and put in the work necessary to get their lives back on track. The 33rd Annual Small Business Awards luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 at the Crowne Plaza Springfield, located at 3000 S. Dirksen Pkwy. This is our opportunity to honor the most outstanding entrepreneurs whose ingenuity, hard work and innovation have created and promoted a successful and growing business in the Springfield area. A panel of impartial judges then reviews and scores the responses. The finalists with the highest scores become the award recipients.
