Message from the CEO I am a firm believer that almost anything of great value that gets done in our personal and/or business lives is based on relationships. In our technology filled world, which serves us very well, when it comes to information and efficiencies, we often times miss the opportunities for new relationships. Creating new connections is crucial to any business, big or small. Why struggle with phone calls or emails when you can put your business on display at the one place where face-to-face conversations are the norm and where businesses grow? This year’s Business Connections, taking place April 28 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, will once again serve as the place for building relationships, with businesses and organizations coming together under one roof to show their services and products to hundreds of attendees. Our presenting sponsor, SCORE, will hold a number of business workshops which will include Social Media Marketing Tips, Business Start-Up Basics, Business Ownership-Franchising, Small Business Employee Benefits - Mandates & Markets, Business Lending Options,
Record Keeping for a Small Business and Google’s Put Your Business on the Map. SCORE has been mentoring new and existing businesses for over 40 years, utilizing successful and experienced business professionals and entrepreneurs.
The Sangamon CEO Businesses will be present for the second year in a row. The program is a collaboration between businesses and school districts in Sangamon County. It is a year-long, accredited high school class which connects high school students to local business leaders and allows them to “experience” the challenges and rewards of running a business. Students then utilize what they learn to create an actual business with real money, including branding and logos along with business and marketing plans. Each CEO student will each have a booth to display their business, answer your questions, and present you with their products and services. Connect with fellow Chamber members at Business Connections
One of the numerous benefits of being a Chamber member is the access it provides to interact with other members. The Chamber’s business expo, Business Connections, is designed with that in mind – providing an afternoon and early evening to meet new customers or reconnect with existing clients. Business Connections will be held on Thursday, April 28 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. The show floor is open from 1:00 - 7:00 p.m. The Chamber encourages all members (business owners, key decision-makers, sales reps) to get away from the office and attend the show throughout the afternoon to see what other members have to offer. Members are challenged to ‘Always Buy Chamber’ whenever possible – purchase products or services from other like-minded businesses that support their community through Chamber membership. At the expo, Sangamon CEO high school students will be present to share information and answer questions about their business. Sangamon CEO is a year-long, accredited high school class made up of 32 students from seven different area schools that connects students to local business leaders and allows them to experience the challenges and rewards of running a business. The Convention Center will be buzzing with a large variety of participating businesses which is one of many great reasons to be a part of this event. It provides a great opportunity to make strategic connections and build business relationships.
State of the City Address on April 28
Join your peers and local leaders for a status report on the City of Springfield. Mayor Jim Langfelder will review accomplishments and challenges from the past year, and outline future priorities at The Chamber’s annual State of the City Luncheon. The event will be held on Thursday, April 28, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, lower level, room B-11. The event begins promptly at 11:30 a.m. and is slated to adjourn by 12:45 p.m.

Make new connections at Speed Networking
The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will host Speed Networking at Business Connections on Thursday, April 28 from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. Speed Networking offers your business extensive exposure with a fast-paced and exciting approach. Develop new leads in a structured format, perfect for businesses of all sizes. Participants will be assigned to a table of up to nine other people and each attendee will have two minutes to make a presentation about their company and product or service. Each person will give their
presentation four times to a different group of prospects. Attendees are encouraged to bring a one page summary about their business and plenty of business cards (at least 50 of each). The cost to attend Speed Networking is $10 for Chamber members and $25 for non-members. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. Deadline is Tuesday, April 26. Legislative Update event set for May 24 The Chamber will hold a Legislative Update event, presented by Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen, on Tuesday, May 24 at The State House Inn, 101 E. Adams St. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. followed by the program from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m.

The Update will include a status report on the Department of Labor (DOL) Overtime Proposal that could significantly impact your bottom line. At this session you will learn specifics of the proposed changes to overtime rules, how to classify your employees accurately under the FLSA and why “salaried” does not necessarily mean exempt from overtime.

Small Business Awards announces new Civic Involvement award The 31st Annual Small Business Awards, presented by Hickory Point Bank and Trust, fsb, recognizes the most outstanding entrepreneurs in Sangamon County. This luncheon will celebrate area businesses and individuals who care about their community and show it through their outstanding public service.
Outstanding Civic Involvement – will return to the event this year.
The Small Business Awards will take place on Tuesday, June 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Chamber’s Q5 Business Retention and Expansion Program produces results for local businesses The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and its Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) are continually working to better the community, serving as a catalyst to help create a strong, growing economy through talent, leadership and collaboration. One way the Chamber provides this kind of leadership is through its Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program.
What is the Business Retention and Expansion program?
The Chamber understands a significant part of economic development begins with assisting local businesses in their efforts to both retain existing clients and employees, as well as expand their business. As a part of the BRE program, the Chamber meets with local businesses - from the heart of downtown Springfield to every corner of Sangamon County: to gather critical and specific information related to growth, expansion, and specific challenges in our business community. When possible, the Chamber provides resources to assist with those challenges or leads the process of bringing others together to address various needs that have been identified. The information gathered during the business interviews is also provided to community leaders and policy makers in order to address identified issues related to growth, expansion and creating a better business climate in Springfield and Sangamon County. The Chamber met with over 100 businesses in 2014 and 2015.
What changes have been made for the program in 2016?
In 2016, a new component has been added to the BRE program with the hope of gathering additional information, while creating and fostering synergetic relationships within specific industries. Along with our individual business visits, The Chamber is now hosting an industry specific monthly luncheon. The luncheons have already proven to be beneficial in two ways, introducing business leaders that were not previously connected, as well as creating environment for honest conversations regarding industry specific challenges.
Any recent success stories?
During two different BRE visits with company officials located in the I-72 and Wabash industrial park area, businesses wanted additional options for telecommunication services, including internet and phone. Businesses taking part in the survey reported that their current internet service had disruptions on almost a monthly basis, with outages that could last over a day. This became problematic as businesses moved more toward technology and internet for their supply chain management needs. Q5 staff initiated communications with area businesses and telecommunication providers. Existing service was identified as an option and new services were recently installed. The businesses who originally brought this issue to our attention have reported satisfaction with the outcome.

The keynote speaker will be Marita Zuraitis. She is Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of Horace Mann Educators Corporation. She joined Horace Mann as president and chief executive officer-elect in May 2013 and assumed her present role in September of that year. Prior to joining Horace Mann, she was president of the property and casualty insurance companies of The Hanover Insurance Group with responsibilities for both personal and commercial lines representing $3 billion in annual premium. She was also a member of Hanover's Executive Leadership team. She is a proven leader in the property and casualty industry, and her 30-year career includes leadership positions in both home office and field environments. Zuraitis holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut and has
completed the Advanced Executive Education Program at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. What is the Mid-Illinois Medical District? The Mid-Illinois Medical District (MIMD) is a one-square mile designation in the heart of Springfield, just to the north of downtown. Established in 2003 by an act of the Illinois General Assembly, the MIMD is a vibrant environment that supports patient care, biomedical research, new medical technologies and advanced medical-related activities. The Mission of the Medical District is to promote the orderly development and expansion of health care facilities and medicalrelated industries. The Medical District is governed by an 11-member commission appointed by the Governor of Illinois, the Mayor of Springfield and the Sangamon County Board. It is is anchored by two major hospitals, Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John's Hospital, as well as the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and Springfield Clinic. Over the past five years, there has been over $600 million in capital investment within the Medical District boundaries. While the State of Illinois created the Medical District, they have not provided reliable and sustainable funding for it. The Greater Springfield Chamber

The Chamber ’s 69th Annual Plae Dae Picnic will take place on Thursday, July 28 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Knight’s Action Park Trade Winds Corporate Picnic Area, located at 1700 Knights Recreation Drive in Springfield.
The Plae Dae Picnic features great food provided by local vendors, beverages, games, music and conversation! In addition, to the activities, there will be a $500 raffle drawing. The Picnic provides a relaxed, casual setting to meet fellow Chamber members and to catch up with old friends and business colleagues. The event is open to the public for anyone 21 years or older. Plae Dae was originally organized in 1948 by the Springfield Manufacturers and Employers Association. The association merged with chamber of commerce in 1953 and it has been a Chamber tradition ever since.

Chamber works to make Sangamon County a Certified Work Ready Community The Q5 Workforce and Education Council applied for Sangamon County to become a Certified Work Ready Community (CWRC) and it was one of eight counties in the U.S. to be accepted. ACT, known for college entrance exams, is the organization that provides this certification by using tools and data to help communities and states become Certified Work Ready. Counties participating in the CWRC program work to have their emerging, unemployed and current workers take a series of tests to obtain National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). This certificate demonstrates skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and mathematical reasoning-all of which are in demand by employers. Each individual will be certified as bronze, silver, gold or platinum. Lincoln Land Community College will provide online assessments that test individual’s knowledge in applied math, reading for information and locating information skills. The job seeker will receive a certificate guaranteeing their
skills and that certificate is transferable anywhere in the United States. Employers that recognize this certification from applicants can use its ranking to assess an individual’s chance for success within their organization, just as the ACT test predicts if a student is prepared and will be successful in college. The certification will help businesses hire the most qualified people for opportunities within their organization, which leads to lower turnover and fewer accidents on the job. The NCRC also helps validate the quality of a community’s workforce to help attract and retain companies, as well as reveal areas where improvements can be made. If we want to grow our local economy, it’s vital that we know the makeup of our workforce, their skills and what employees are available to current and new employers. We are asking companies to show their support and recognize this initiative by contacting Sarah Graham at

Being a Certified Work Ready Community will position Sangamon County to be a leader in the state, engaging area business, education and economic development leaders to work together toward the shared goal of creating jobs and growing the economy. The certification will help Sangamon County attract and/or expand business and industry by presenting economic developers and site selectors the qualifications of our workforce with real data. Once certified, using data, processes and tools provided by ACT, this certificate will help Sangamon County measure and close the skills gap and help align our workforce development efforts. Sangamon County will be nationally recognized for our workforce, and a strong workforce is a tremendous economic advantage.

Take The Corporate Cup Challenge!
The 21st Annual Corporate Cup Challenge Golf Outing for The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Piper Glen Golf Club. The Corporate Cup Challenge is presented by HealthLink and features Springfield area businesses competing against one another in a shotgun start, scramble format. Each team consists of four golfers with a minimum of one golfer from the sponsoring business. Teams have their choice of a morning (7:30) or afternoon (12:45) tee time.
